BILLINGHAM TOWN grabbed the bragging rights as they came from behind to beat neighbours Synthonia 3-2 and complete a top flight league double.
A healthy Bank Holiday crowd at Town's Bedford Terrace saw the visitors go
ahead on 28 minutes as new boy Nicky Scaife drilled home an unstoppable 25
free-kick.
But Town hit back just before the break as Steve Huggins broke down the right
and as the Synners defence backed off he got to the edge of the box then rifled
a low shot inside the far post.
And Town went ahead on 57 minutes as skipper Huggins sent full-back Andrew
Foster over-lapping down the right and when he squared into the box nippy
striker Stuart Banks made no mistake.
Synners levelled quickly as a Scaife ball into the box sparked a scramble and
Anthony Abel scooped up the loose ball and squeezed between two defenders to stab home at the near post.
But Town sealed it on 75 minutes as alert Chris Smith robbed a defender 25
yards out and skipped into the box to send a rasping low drive inside the far
upright.
The victory follows a 4-1 away win at Synthonia on Boxing day.
MARSKE UNITED claimed a 3-1 win in the second division derby away at
GUISBOROUGH.
The Seasiders spurned a golden opportunity to go ahead after 15 minutes when
they were awarded a penalty but Town keeper Simon Bishop - who had conceded the spot kick - made amends by saving from Shaun Howes.
But Marske were back to take lead five minutes later when Tony Roberts climbed highest to head home from a dead ball.
And the in-form Seasiders made it two just before the break as keeper Bishop
tangled with a defender as they went for a cross leaving Benn THompson to
profit from the blunder and sweep home from close range.
Guisborough pulled one back on the hour as Marske midfielder Austin Johnson put through his own net and the Priorymen almost levelled ten minutes from time as new boy Curtis Lean got free in the box only to put his shot against the post.
Marske sealed it in the final minute when Shaun Howes, who rejoined the
Seasiders from Guisborough earlier this season, cracked home from 20 yards.
In the only other game Spennymoor won 1-0 away at Bishop Auckland in another top flight derby.
