Stewy Agrees New Deal

Posted by on February 15, 2008 2:33 PM |

STEWART DOWNING has agreed a new five year contract at Boro and is hoping to sign it on Monday. As he is the the most potent creative force at the club and the ideal man to ping the crosses in for goal machine Afonso Alves to score from that is excellent news for everyone.

Everyone apart from Ian Elliot that is. Having painted himself into a corner by saying his boy would not sign a new deal, wanted out and would run down his contract and leave on a free then rattling the cage with talk of legal action he has made himself look a bit of a prat. He may well have forced the club back to the table with a new deal with talk of Downing exit (although they were always going to stump up) but he has burned his bridges with the very people he is supposed to be smoozing in order to get the best possible deal for his client.

And Downing has now flatly contradicted Elliott's contention that he wanted to leave and insisted the support of fans - who could quite easily have reacted vehemently after the agent's comments to just about anyone who would listen - helped persuade him to stay. He said:

“This is where I want to be. It’s my hometown club but I had told them that I didn’t want us to stand still. Signing Alves shows how ambitious we are. There’s been talk about other clubs but I never wanted out. This is what I’ve wanted all along. I’d like to thank the fans for the support they have given me. They could have really got on my back in recent weeks in response to all that was being said. But they have been great.”

We have discussed on the blog before how Downing is a key element of Gareth Southgate's attacking style and so is crucial to the club - but also how the system and his role in it at Boro suits him and gives him a platform and an opportunity to boost his profile, his Opta stats, his DJing career and his England prospects too. It is a perfect matych.

After a productive January on and off the pitch this signing - ahead of schedule - is a great result. Another building block of a potentially great team is slotted into place. Wheater next.

So Stewie has penned a new deal, what a blow to that nice Mr Elliott.

But the contract doesnt matter, it is up to the club to give reasons for players to stay. Lets start at Bramall Lane and get into the 6th round of the cup.

Looks like Downing has signed for a further 5 years. Keith Lamb just regained a bit of the respect lost in the past day or two.

Hopefully that's another piece in place to stop the unrest within the club that everyone has noticed since the beginning of the season.

With Wheater signed up that gives us a strong team on long term contracts, and with everyone fit would allow Southgate a quality first 11 with a few attacking options and ways of changing a game.

Lets get Mido, Alves and Tuncay back to full fitness and really go for it, as we've got a lot of big clubs to play between now and the end of the season, and some good (televised) results could see boros profile raised considerably in the eyes of the national press and give us a top 10 finish - let's see some quality football!

Yep - Great result having Stewie sign up, as others have said Wheater next.

Next step of the development of this team is a win on Sunday.
Looking further ahead we need a top class keeper in the summer and another striker.

The future looks bright, if the club install TB's heated seats then I would expect us to be in the top four next year, without them the aim must be top eight!

Ground hog day, posted about Stewie on the Septic Bladder thread and it appeared on a different one. Thats two threads running.

Question, was the nice Mr Elliott involved or was it Stewie and Dad?

I have just found out that the friends we havent seen for ages are not coming this Sunday so I could have gone to the match after all. Bugger!

Good news that Downing is staying and a fantastic two fingered salute to his agent.

The best thing though is that he has come out and said he wanted to stay and that despite interest from other clubs he always wanted to stay.. for me thats the best thing he could have done and the reception he will get on sunday i think will show he has done the right thing...

We are a club with huge ambition and realising it is a huge challenge but thanks to Steve Gibson we can all hope that it will bare fruit...

Next step is to get Wheater signed on an even longer deal...

COME ON BORO!!!!!!!!!!

In the past I have been Lambo's nemesis but it has to be said that the new deal with Downing , especially in light of Ian Elliot's outburst [together with winning the 'world stare out' competition against Herenveen, AZ and Roma at 30 minutes before February] has given me cause to start a round of Theres only one Keith Lamb.

Great news,Stewy, has been one of our most consistent performers for some time.

Lets get the Redcar Rock signed up,and then if most of the squad can keep fit,we probably only need another striker and a creative midfielder in the summer to have a competitive team who can establish us in the top ten.

Well done to Steve Gibson and Keith Lamb for providing the funds and negotiating the deals for Stewy,The Fonz, and hopefully the "Rock".

*Phew*. Plenty of Boro supporters will be relieved to hear about Downing signing a new contract.... now they can start criticising him again!

Although much of our most creative play goes up the right wing these days, with the reliable Young, O'Neil's energy and Aliadiere's pace, Stewie is a vital part of the team and his contract signing adds stability to the club going into the summer.

Richard - never disappointed! Particularly interesting thoughts on the potential financial motives of various parties, certainly makes you think.

It might well be naive and overly optimistic to think that Gibson would change his mind because you sent him a letter, but who knows? And someone has to speak up for the disillusioned fan.

I wonder if the first mistake that has been thickening this wedge of football becoming business, clubs becoming brands and supporters becoming customers was in 1888 when clubs first began to turn into limited companies! It was just a convenience at the time, but was the seed that is bearing rotten fruit now.

If all football clubs were forced to run as not-for-profit organisations, the majority of these rich foreign "benefactors" would crawl back under whatever rocks they emerged from.

The final rubicon, and one which should be resisted at all costs, and which would definitely have me turning my back on any clubs which crossed it, would be if the top clubs decided to leave the auspices of FIFA / the FA, and go it alone. That would be the final nail in football's bloated coffin.

Now how about Wheater? This "encouraging talks" stuff I hear from the 'Gate is all very well, but we've heard it too many times. I'll be happy the moment he actually puts pen to paper...

(Mind you, the press can say one thing, the truth can be another. I heard recently that Nigel Worthington never signed a long-term deal with NI, in the same way McClaren never really put pen to paper on the '09 contract.)

Dont be surprised if it comes back in another format and even with a Septic Bladder proposal. One of the things the prem got wrong was going public and thinking everyone would bow to their wishes, if they had kept stum and massaged the egos of the FA (batwick was originally quite keen), Platini and Bladder who knows what would have happened.

Great news about Stewart Downing's new 5 year contract.

Echo all previous sentiments and agree that then next major priority is to get the David Wheater contract nailed down.

However, I must mention a great bit of business which has gone relatively unnoticed, which is tying Josh Walker down until 2009. What a sublime goal he scored for Aberdeen against the once mighty Bayern Muchen the other night.

I have to agree with the Gate, when he is ready, he will be like a new signing for the first team.

The future is bright, the future is red and white....

Come on Boro.

I remember a "Downing is a waste of space" thread on FMTTM a year or so ago where there were over 250 posts and most people were in agreement with this, as Downing was pilloried by these people.

After reading all of the "Great news, get in there Stewy" and such like posts written by the same people who were slagging Downing off not long ago, I would just like to say the sheer hypocrisy of the some of the so called modern day Boro fan never ceases to amaze me.

Adding my comments of pleasure and congratulation and some relief to all the others on here with the great news about Stewie!!

I'd echo too the hope that we get Wheats contract sorted soon too and also what Ian said about continuing to give players the best reasons to stay - over and above the money - that we keep the cup run going and that we maintain Prem league status and set ourselves up for a better season next time round.

Regulars will know that I'm not The Count's biggest fan but you can't knock when it's deserved if you don't give credit when it's due too.

So well done to The Count, Gibbo, Gate and to Stewie too for having the independence of mind to make his agent do what he wanted him to do.

I think the criticisms of Mr Lamb are unjustified & a little naive concensidering the economics of modern football.

He stated the club lost 17m ( ?) last year - is Steve Gibson expected & also, if there is a World recession, would he be able to use his own funds to subsidise the club?

Lamb was telling it to us as it is; just like last year when he said we would get the club we deserve. Maybe, for some, who can't face the reality of the modern game, shooting the messager is the only option?

Also , has SD sacked his Agent? Have they parted or was it a finely calculated ruse to get what they wanted & have achieved , more cash for both of them?

Two things stick out in my mind regarding the Downing saga:

1) His agent gives agents a bad name and typifies everything that's wrong with that profession.

2) Stewie is a class act. There was a lot of talk in the media, but none of it came from Stewie. He kept plugging away, despite overwhelming distractions.

This was sweet news right on the back of the Alves transfer, and the club should be commended for sorting the lad's future out sooner rather than later :)

onthemap wrote...

It's surprising that your personal dislike for this guy, Elliot that is, has caused you to miss the mark by such a huge margin.

Elliot is retained by Downing, he hasn't been making any of this up, his client had obviously made clear what the situation would be should the club not agree to his demands.

Whether you care for the personality of an individual should not influence whether you report the facts.

Elliot has done the job he is paid to do, he got the club to come up with an improved offer for his client and all parties are reportedly delighted with the outcome.

How a successfully negotiated contract can be used to demonstrate the incompetence of the very individual who engineered it is beyond belief.

Unless of course you feel it's more important to make clear that he's a Geordie, weak lazy journalism.

**AV writes: There's nothing personal at all as I don't know the guy, although I admit I am not a great fan of agents in general or anyone who takes money out of the game without making a contribution and I am staggered players don't just use the PFA to broker deals. I have never mentioned where he is from as I don't think it is relevant.

Of course you can argue that having secured a new deal he has done his job and he is quids in - but equally you can argue that he has not done his job particularly well.

The use of the press is a legitimate tactic for agents but the strategy he adopted - saying Downing wanted away and would let his deal run down and leave Boro with no transfer income - was a high risk one that could easily have exposed his client to a massive boo boy backlash that may have affected his form, his England prospects and ultimately his bargaining position and future resale value. I'm not sure that was wise at all.

Further, getting into an undignified slanging match with Steve Gibson and bluster about writs was a bridge burning exercise that showed a lack of diplomacy and appeared to be a last throw of the dice. And it could yet come back to haunt him as he has several other Boro players on his books and having become estranged from the key figures at the club can not help his, or their position.

Plus, if you really wanted to look at in hard nosed business terms you could question his ability because the previous deal he engineered was clearly not a good one.

If it was it would have contained clauses giving Downing parity with the top earners so he got a pay rise every time someone came in above him. It would have had annual rises. It would have escalators so he got pay rises with every ten England caps, or every 50 Boro games. Had that deal been a strong one it wouldn't have needed the agent to go back in six months later looking for more.

Hi Av
Very good news that Stewy has signed a new contract. He is definitely the type of player we need at MFC.

I'll be equally pleased if Wheater also signs a new contract too. For a long time I've felt that Boro were a physically "small" team. With the players now we look to be a "properly grown up" side instead of a team of young men!

With regard to Alves' debut I felt that he didn't quite hit the mark expected. Even allowing for his long lay-off from matches and allowing for his lack of full training I felt he didn't do enough.

On reflection perhaps I was unfair to expect so much. I'm left wondering if he will be like Jimmy Greaves - only in the game for 2 minutes, but what minutes! Alves is definitely not one who will run his socks off, like Tuncay. Nevertheless each will play a vital part in Boro's resurgence as a top ten force.

Looking forward to the Blades game and our continued progress in the FA Cup.

After all the backslapping and well dones to one and all (and I have been patting backs as much as anyone) we come back to the main item.

A football match, and one in the openest FA Cup for years. Tomorrow the lads will have to show all the resilience they shown since New Years day, they will have to take what chances they get because there is a great atmosphere at Bramall Lane when it is full and the home fans are behind their team.

As I cant make it - I wont tell you about the fact I was given the wrong date for friends travelling up from the South West for the day and found out just after the sold out signs went up because it will only upset me - I will be glued to the TV. My wife will get worried when I am all attentive but the penny will drop when we hide the remote.
