Boro Transfer Latest...

Posted by on January 17, 2008 3:35 PM |

AFTER a few days of bubbling Barcodetastic optimism at the prospect of a new two pronged Samba strikeforce, reinforcements on the left and any one of four from the White Hart Lane clearout, Boro fans' hope's of a January reshuffle have taken a battering today.

Not content with the worrying news that despite his eagerness to join Boro Alves is tied up in red tape in Dutch FA headquarters, Matt Taylor has joined Bolton and Fred has announce he is to stay at Lyon. Even Ross McCormack has pulled out of a mooted move.

The Alves situation remains unclear. While the Dutch tribunal has established the facts - the serial signatory has not one but two legal contracts and is said to have shaken hands with Boro on a third - the way the Gordian knot will be unravelled and the time-table for that is as yet unclear and leave Boro sweating as the end of the window looms.

Meanwhile Bolton have signed left sided target Matt Taylor from Portsmouth on a three-and-a-half year deal. Taylor declined to move from being a squad player at Fratton Park to being a squad player at th eRiverside and has instead opted for first team football at the Reebok, for an undisclosed fee which is hinted as being over £4m, a figure Boro declined to match.

Bolton boss Gary Megson told the club’s website, bwfc.co.uk: “Matt is a quality player who is very versatile on the left-hand side. He is a proven Premier League performer who will bring additional quality to our squad. He has attracted interest from a number of clubs and I am delighted that we have managed to bring him here."

Elsewhere Fred seems dead. He has ended the speculation and said he is staying at Lyon. For now. Despite Boro's hints of interest in him, the Brazilian failed to even mention Teesside as ever having been an option in his decision making when he outlined his future today.

The Brazil international, reported by own agent and brother Rodrigo as being close to signing for Spurs and by Harry Redknapp as practically a Boro player earlier this week, said today : "I haven’t received any good offers. From now on, I am no longer talking about a transfer, I am 100% a Lyon player.”

PSG had confirmed a bid of 12million euros (£9m) but Fred and Lyon’s delay in replying - the brother was too busy courting Premiership interest, generating tabloid interets and creating an illusion of demand - led them to pull the plug.Well, why buy a player who has spent so much time trying to sign for someone else?

Fred has now pledged his loyalty to Lyon ... until next week at least. “PSG and Tottenham were interested but their offers did not interest me,” he said after training, petulently insisting he never wanted to go out with them anyway and besides, they smell.

And in Scotland Ross McCormack has said that despite interest from Boro in a mooted £250,000 move he has opted to finish the season with Motherwell. That one may well be revived in the summer - whenhe will be available on a Bosman - but for now, with two left sided targets out of the equation and the need to raise cash to sign two big money strikers no longer a factor the pressure on Boro to cash in has eased making it less likely that Stewart Downing will leave. Especially as Spurs have failed to harden up their long-running interest with a bid as yet.

That leaves Boro as they were on January 1st but with Mido back in training and closer to a return plus favourites - but far from certainties - to sign Alves. Rob Hulse anyone?

Mr V - your descent into depression is palpable! You, of all people should realise that when Boro are involved in transfer dealings, there will be nothing simple, clearcut or straightforward.

Who is to say that Alves would be granted a work permit anyway, even if we wrest him from the grasp of the Cheeseheads for multis of millions? So let's not indulge in this manic depressive, he's coming, he's not, Skunk-like behaviour and be thankful that Mido is returning, hopefully much fitter than before and raring to bag a brace against Blackburn (with an odd Tuncay spectacular thrown in, perhaps).

I couldnt really see the value of going for Taylor anyway. He is a decent player, but would he really get a game up here ahead of our two left footed Midfield players, Downing and Arca? £4.5M is too much for another squad player, we have enough in that area for cover anyway.

The Dutch FA have come out and told everyone that Alves has 2 contracts....well thanks, tell us something we dont know!

The question is though, if Heerenveen didnt sign the transfer papers required, then surely he is still their player as they didnt authorise it fully?

Another question would be, who is paying his wages? The team paying his wages will be the one we should be dealing with, right? Who knows anymore! Sounds like this could drag on and become another Tevez saga!

McCormack would come here and be another understudy so that isnt a big loss. As for the Spurs links, Defoe entered negotiations with Villa today about a possible £10M move, so he looks out of the question.

The only other from down there I would look at would be Robinson. Ive heard Ramos is looking at bringing in another keeper, which leaves his starting place in jeopardy. How about an 18 month loan deal, which we could have the opportunity to make into a permanent deal at each of the transfer windows within that period?

Or, what about the £8M Berbatov bid?

I think Alves would qualify for a work permit no problem. Even though he's probably not got the Brazil caps, his goals in the Dutch league probably qualify him as a "most excellent player" or whatever term they use.

Well, as the official merchant of doom and gloom around here these days, I'm actually very pleased at all the goings on as it at least shows that everything possible is being done by the powers that be for the money available. So you can't knock them if people don't want to sign.

Anyway, at the end of the day if these people don't really want to come here as one of their first choices then I'd rather they didn't come at all and so I'm glad that we didn't sign any of these people. We don't want any shop window, waiting for better offers types.

OK, it's not good news that we are back to square one, but I can't see nobody signing before the window closes with all the effort that's going on. So I think that there is hope yet. Keep us posted capo.

"Barcodetastic optimism", AV?

There's another kick in the teeth, comparing Boro fans to those deluded Geordie buffoon's. What an insult!

The amount of nonsense coming from the fans (and a certain Newcastle match commentator who works for a radio station named after a very large period of time) was laughable enough, but became rather grating after having it constantly rammed down my throat on TV, radio and newspaper. I really hope it all goes t**s up for Keegan and Newcastle; we will all guffaw at them when it does!

You can't beat Geordie delusions and nonsense. The bluster that came out of their mouths on the TV last night, well, we all know what they are like and they never fail to prove how deluded and stupid they are.

What we've had rammed down our throats over Keegan is classic "Barcodetastic optimism"; we don't even come close.

Enough of the barcodes, and lets all concentrate on our beloved Boro.

I have just read:
CHARLTON winger Jerome Thomas has been unable to agree a new contract at The Valley.

That has alerted Gareth Southgate’s Premier League strugglers Middlesbrough and rock- bottom Derby.

Thomas, 24, a former Arsenal trainee, signed for the Addicks for £100,000 in 2004 and has 18 months of his current deal to run.

Good to see that despite Downing's agents attempts to sell him, he may stay at the Boro.

I think Alves will join before the window shuts, he has agreed terms with the Boro and unless AZ beleive that they may be able to bump up the price, they have nothing to gain by forcing Alves to join them.

Werdermouth wrote...

I'm not overly bothered that we missed out on the addition yet more lefties for the squad - I guess Downing will stay at least until summer.

Can't we source a few more options on the right? At the moment if O'Neil can't play we end up with a defensive midfielder on the right and who exactly is cover for Young?

Also Fred sounds like the worst example of a 'show me the money' player and would probably never stop moaning until he moved on to a 'bigger' club.

However, I'm still hopeful on Alves - though it's been reported that it's a done deal because he shook hands on it with Boro - Come on! he doesn't even think signing a contract is a good enough reason to honour an agreement.

I still think we should also sign a keeper (Robinson/Harper) and a right-sided midfielder (Gera?) and perhaps another striker (Lita?).

Just Read:

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has not ruled out Tottenham target Fred leaving in the January transfer window. (Press Association 0933 GMT)

However as Werdermouth posts above, it seems Fred will only move if he gets a mega contract.

Spurs could not agree terms with him, not suprising if as alleged he wants £70k a week.

AV - you can rest more easily, McFadden has signed for Birmingham.

If the fee is £6m what does this make Stewy worth?

**AV writes: Fred's not dead but it is a waiting game. We may move if Alves gets bogged own while Spurs are doing some excellent poker facing on several fronts.

I am guessing the Alves fiasco will finish with boro paying AZ the difference on what we were going to pay for him and what AZ were going to pay.

Then his selling club just keep the origonal fee they agreed with AZ. I am assuming that boro came in with a higher offer and that is why his selling club are happy to go with our offer

Big mets..Boro 4 ever!! wrote...

Here we go again same old Boro. Am I the only one who knows that the Boro has needed a Forward since the transfer window closed in August? So why 2 weeks in to the new window have we not secured one???

Yes the Boro are conceding goals but we all know that the main reason we are in the position we are is because of poor finishing in key moments of matches....we need a forward now!!

Yes i know in the modern game it takes time with agents and fees to sort out. It seems as though we are throwing all of our eggs in one basket so too speak

Does it not worry anyone that we are trying to complete a club record deal (10mil) for a untried forward who's only scored goals in Holland (Kezman got more..say no more)?

He has also held his club to ransom by going on strike and to add insult to injury he joins AZ only to be offered more money by Boro so now he wants to come here...mmmm interesting!! Also why was he valued at 5-6mil in the summer and now 10-12???

Yes he maybe Boros savior but i feel that to many things point to a new Rava or Massimo....i only hope that i am wrong as 10-12mil is a lot for us to blow.

We also now know that Taylor and Fred are no goes so whats left?? I would love Boro to make a move for Robinson. Yes , dodgy last 12 Months, but hes only 28 and still a proven English Premiership keeper who who could serve the Boro for the next 8-10 years and at 4mil (not including Downing) a steal as if he gets back to his best would be worth twice that.. and England No1 again (long time since we have sung that song ha).

Also how about a move for Darren Bent?? Quick, direct and a proven young english goal scorer with a real point to prove (like Ally but he can finish) and a bet a bid of 10mil (Alves money) would really test Ramos (again no Downing)...although they would test me if they offered Bent and Robbo for him, Dream land i think?

Gonna go now, hope we get a top forward soon and i really hope that Alves proves me wrong and i am walking around Middlebrough in my No?? Alves shirt come May.

ps watching Sky news full of crazy Bar-code fans I've had to turn it off they are really annoying me!! in 2 Months time they will be on TV trying to get him sacked.......8th biggest club in the world?? They're having a laugh!!!

Listened to Radio 5 last night. Dont mind Keegan going back to Toon, good luck to him and them, but the wall to wall coverage is getting a bit much.

BA Boeing 777 crash lands at Heathrow after a loss of power - Keegan would have made a perfect touchdown.

Flood alerts across the country but Keegan is OK because he can walk on water.

Lets just hope for the Toon fans sake things dont go belly up.

On to more important matters, the transfers will look after themselves though there may be news from the reconvened Dutch FA tribunal later on.

Our fate largely depends on the players we have already have at the club. My statement pre Reading that it would be unlikely to have any new players bedded into the side until mid Feb looks to be a fair bet. Nothing clever about the prediction because most transfers dont take place until late Jan, the players you get in are more than likely not fully match fit and then need time to settle.

One bonus is that Mido will be back earlier than expected as he hasnt been able to join up with Egypt though too late for tomorrow. I guess we will revert to the following line up

Swarz
Young, Huth, Woodie, Pogo
O'Neill, two out of Rockie, Arca, Boat and Stewie on the left.
Tuncay floating and Aliadiere up front.

May be tempted by a midfield five with Tuncay coming off the bench second half.

A point is the minimum requirement and hope the rest of the results go for us, the fixtures have been rather kind with tough matches for all the strugglers.

Key thing as mentioned in earlier blogs is to maintain a good tempo, scoring first will as always be the key. Blackburn are a tough outfit, very resilient and have several strikers (for those who dont know the term, strikers are those players who play at the front of the team and score goals, some clubs have them, others dont)

Let's hope the Alves thing gets sorted but if we were going to buy Alves AND Fred and the latter is now not on, why can't we get on with the alternatives that Gate says he's got his eye on.

He could use the opportunity of the Blackburn game to talk to Hughes about Jason Roberts. When he came on as sub in their last game he showed what he is all about - pace and power, good in the air and holding the ball up. Roughed up the opposition defenders and grabbed the winner.

Lita is a good player but is trouble off the field and we don't need any more of that. The lad from Motherwell seems to me to be McSimba in waiting.

I thought that Matt Taylor would have been useful as a left back but less so on the left of midfield where we have plenty.

I'm still not hopeful on Stewie but I can only hope that Gate means what he says about him staying. I do recall him saying exactly the same thing about Veruka and The Yak just before they left and with The Count on board the contract negotiations.....

If I can return to my well worn theme of bringing O'Neil inside to the box to box role then we could well do with re-opening our interest in Gera who is still a contract refusenik.

Better still we could follow up on Darren Fletcher's desire for first team football. He and O'Neil are equally happy in the middle of midfield or on the right. They would make an excellent pairing.

I also see that Rocky has decided he wants to stay here. Well, you can't have everything, can you.

We need something from the Blackburn game - in fact we need 3 somethings but definitely not a nothing. It'll be tough there - it always is for us.

I am disappointed to see Mido still in hiding and although there seems to be better news on others being fit I have long since learned to wait to see what Saturday brings - who is fit and which Boro gets off the coach.

Let's hope it's the version that played Pompey away. Lawro's backed against us again, so that's a good start!

**AV writes: The key difference between Yak and Stewie is that everyone in the club from the top man to the tea lady wanted the former out whereas they all want the latter to stay. The internal dynamics are completely different.

i realy havnt laughed so much in a long time, thank you very much "king kev" its absolutely fantastic.

Listening to the geordies on tv,radio and reading about it every day they realy are the most deluded supporters in the world.

How is "king kev" going to win them the premiership? Simple answer is he wont. I doubt he will even be able to bring back the attacking, freeflowing football of the 90s.

Im not just talking about the geordies here but premiership football as a whole but we have seen changes over the years of a type of football that is built on stability and foundation, solid defences and workman like effort.

Teams like everton and bolton stifle the opposition batter them with physicality and precise set plays. Newcastle have a defence that is as much use a chocolate fire guard so how can they dream of more attacking football?

Us boro fans realise the need for a striker because we know our defence is capable of keeping a clean sheet and that 1 goal might win the game. newcastle want more strikers to win 5-4. surely this is ridiculous and a mear fantasy that renders on stupidity.

Keegan won just 1 of his last 14 games at man city and his buys where seriously questioned.

Im so excited about seeing newcastle stride forward and then being picked off on the break by teams like everton, bolton, west ham and villa. The dream ticket is all going to end in tears and hopefully relegation!

Come on Boro

If Schwarzer had commited the catalogue of blunders Robinson has in the past 12 months there would have been a 'chicken run' witch hunt to run him out of town. Schwarzer may be on the decline but Robinson is not the answer.

Sell Woodgate to the barcodes - why!! He's the best centre back we've got and one of the best is in the prem, what on earth would we want to weaken the team for!?

There's still two weeks to go before the transfer window closes, we could still see Alves & Fred pitch up, but hopefully Stewie will stay.
