Ten Snippets

Posted by on May 31, 2007 9:40 AM |

THE SOARAWAY season just gone has been broken down into a century of bite size back page snippets by ace gossip condensers at the Daily Telegraph and an entertaining digest it makes too. My personal favourites were no-necked Welsh karaoke king Craig Bellamy taking a five iron to John Arne Riise in a midnight demonstration of his swing and Leeds Marching On to division three and a clash with mighty Hartlepool.

Boro get into the list twice, first at number 71 for becoming the first team to overturn a lead and beat Chelsea since the fast fading self parody Special One took over and then again at 91 as perma-crock Real Madrid reserve Jonathan Woodgate returns to English football with his local club.

Never one to see a simple format go to waste, here's my top ten

10 Spot of bother...
Christiano Ronaldo leaps high above an incoming sliding challenge from keeper Mark Schwarzer then goes down to win a penalty against Boro in the league game at the Riverside in December to spark yet another "cheat" storm. Graceless red faced chuddie muncher Alex Ferguson was forced to admit there had been no contact after watching a replay . "He's evading it", he blustered. "The intent was there."

9 Missimo blast misses target... The Gladiator stomps angrily through the exit door and blames "the ever smiling" Steve McClaren, Gareth Southgate, the coaching staff, the nutritionists, the parmos, the Gazette and anyone else but himself for his failure to set the world alight after only being given 100 games to prove his ability. Boro fans just shrug philosophically while the tabloids pick up the stick and gleefully use it to beat McClaren with.

8 Hit him Stewy... A Downing doppelganger invaded the pitch and tried to Lamp Frank as Chelsea beat Spurs in the FA Cup. Not just a bloke who looked a bit like our local left footed line-hugger but a full on spitting image.

stewypunch.jpg

7 Beat the clock.... Or don't. Boro fail to sign treatment table junkie Robert Huth before the transfer deadline passes. But never mind, his paperwork was caught up in red tape with Ashley Cole's and with Arsenal and Chelsea involved Boro are given the nod an hour later as the FA invent the concept of transfer deadline stoppage time.

6 The lion sleeps tonight... January's big signing to beef up Boro's flagging battle against the drop was a player recovering from a bad knee injury, who went on a major league bender after missing out on the World Cup and who is called "the lazy genius" by the tabloids. No, not Gazza. The lightweight Lion King has been brushed aside by Nobby Solano, done the season's most pathetic dive and got into a few good positions but failed to hit the target. And he could be a first choice striker next year.

5 Can I speak to Bernie please?...
Abel Xavier rings in to The Three Legends (when there were three and when they were all still speaking to each other) to say he loves Boro and wants to see the club transformed into a mighty powerhouse, he is a passionate and dedicated professional who has paid the consequences for the mix-up with the Lemsip, he is the lowest paid player in the club. "Ah seyz that," responds the quiff.

4 Pint of Schaudenfreude... Boro fans allow themselves a wicked smile as Steve McClaren is booed off at half-time with plucky England holding mighty Andorra to a goalless draw at the break. It is one-dimensional, passionless, negative, slow and boring. Now you know how we felt.

3 Badge of honour... Rebranded Boro declare a proud new era for the club and underline the new mentality of high-profile glossy professionalism, PR savvy and investment in excellence by launching their new badge. The design is hastily scribbled on the back of a fag-packet then unveiled to the world with a bang as the new logo is nailed on one side of a sheet of chipboard and propped on a trestle table in the centre-circle while bored staff turn it regularly so every stand gets to gaze in wonder.

2 Waltzing Viduka... welcome to the annual Boro ball in which an influential player is invited to dance around a lucrative new contract, teasing, flirting and using contradictory body language from January until July while everyone waits tensely to see who will be his partner when the music stops.

1 Now that's 'intent'... James Morrison gained retribution for Boro and had a national coalition of xenophobic England fans, old school supporter sof fair play and fellow victims of Ronaldo's thespian tumbling everywhere cheering him to the echo as the red mist descended at Old Trafford and he wiped out Ronaldo with an agricultural tackle. Diveinho wants to think himself lucky it wasn't Pogatetz who crunced him.

For me this season wil be remembered for a couple of things:-

Boro fans and club complaining about ronaldo and using him as a scape goat to blame an average season on. "If it wasnt for that pesky portuguese player we would have won the fa cup" But on the other side of the coin pre xmas yakubu was also good at getting penalties..just ask any westbrom fans. It was very unprofessional by southgate to get involved, i guess the pressure of being near the bottom was getting to him.

It's been a season on 2 halves. pre xmas yakubu on fire and viduka pretty average. post xmas yakubu average and viduka on fire. With all this hysteria of viduka to newcastle everyone has forgot how good yakubu is when he is on form and how poor viduka has been pre 2007.

Waltzing Viduka...

Boro eager to start Viduka talks
Middlesbrough are keen to sort out a new contract for Mark Viduka - after the January transfer window closes.

The 31-year-old striker's deal expires in the summer and agent Steve Kutner reportedly said he may leave this month because Boro had not made a new offer.

"They are well aware we want to extend his deal beyond its expiry," said chief executive Keith Lamb.

"The transfer window means January is not the time to discuss the future of a player already under contract."

"Once the transfer window is closed, we will be only too pleased to sit down with Mark's adviser to discuss his future " Chief executive Keith Lamb

Quotes from Viduka about his family, love of the club, blah blah blah.. missed out, of course that like most footballers - he is a total mercinary and that he can not possibly live on 40k a week.

Here We Go Again... Boro fans get that sinking feeling and get the calculators out to work out everyone else in the relegation fight's results.

That could have been any week of the season really couldn't it. For me it was after week one when Boro threw away a two goal lead at Reading, beat Chelsea then got ripped apart by Portsmouth in one of the worst home displays 'Ive ever seen.

You sound like one of those fans who falls for the badge kissing lark! In the end its just a job to a footballer.

What about Neil Warncock having a pop over Boro resting players for the Man City match being a disgrace. He is was right. It was. That result put us right back in it and we lost at Old Trafford anyway. The season fell apart there and then.

On the up side there is the impact of Julio Arca, the arrival of Andrew Taylor and the promise of Johnson and Cattermole. Not a lot else to take out of the season really.

PS as well as booing the other Ste Mac the idiot sheep England fans had a go at Stewy Downing because the press have marked him out as the scapegoat just because he plays for Boro. That was another disgrace.

Ahh, the memories all come flooding back.

The main thing has to be that at number 10 there is no relegation from the top flight and so whatever our gripes are, this must surely be a massive silver lining for us.

We all generally accept that we had a poor season, but at the end of the day a poor season by our own standards still sees us where we belong, so it's not all bad.

" 9 Missimo blast misses target... "

Siena Stats For Mr Maccarone This Season Read As Follows:

Played 11
Scored 6

Not bad at all given the fact that this is in a league with arguably the best defences in the world and one in which goals are notoriously hard to come by.

Totti has a goal scoring record of 1 in every 3 and his goal scoring record in Italy is described by Ruud Gullit as fantastic.

Obviously these stats need to be seen at the end of an entire season, and not just after 11 games, so although it's a great start, the jury's still out on Mr Maccarone who still has it ALL to prove.

But so far, so good, especially when he has better stats than our very own Mark Viduka.

Viduka this season has averaged 1 goal every 148 minutes played.

Maccarone this season has averaged 1 goal every 138 minutes played.

Whatever the reasons and whoever is / was to blame, he obviously didn't get on with Mr Mcclaren.

It will be interesting to see who has the last laugh out of the two.... If England don't qualify then it won't be Mcclaren as he'll be out of a job, where he belongs, in my opinion.

Why is Morrison's 'tackle' listed at number one? Is it because we come to expect reckless challenges as a replacement for the sub-standard performances every week?

It was totally of unprofessional of Morrison to fly in like that, fogivable only because of his age. He could have snapped Ronaldo's leg and the fact that Ronaldo just got up and laughed it off made him look even worse.

The rest, I pretty much agree with.

**AV writes: I agree it was rash, unproductive and ultimately it cost Morrison his chance to stake a claim on the right - but it was also a moment that summed up our three time frustration with Man U and caught the zeitgeist as it correctly identified our panto villain and dished out a form retribution that struck a chord with the crowd. It was also the only time all season that powerful emotions actually bubbled to the surface of our lake of apathy.

Personally I dont think Ronaldoveragain did much wrong against us. His worst moment was the dive that got Boat booked. The first penalty was a poor decision when Ronaldo trod on the ball ball, the second when Boat stuck his hands up and the third when it looked a penalty when Woodie challenged him.

Forget all that, Morrison was number one for providing a moment that many fans treasured. He became a folk hero to many fans around the country.

The new badge is shocking though it does have a challenger in the newly launched logo for the 2012 olympics.

there is a hell of a lot more categories protected under the new badge than 'MIDDLESBROUGH 1986 FOOTBALL CLUB' http://www.ipo.gov.uk/tm/t-find/t-find-text?detailsrequested=C&searchtext=middlesbrough&typeofsearch=S&classselected=99&crosssearch=Y&statusselected=A

Even though it was a poor season overall there have been some good highlights this season.

Beating the big boys for starters throughout the year, then being 1 replay against Man UTD away from the FA Cup semi finals. Had we won this 1 game then who knows it could have all been so very different for GS and co and instead of most of us being fed up with the state of affairs at the club we may well all be singing a very different tune.

... and then we clinched the signing of Woody. If only those fools at the club would release some real money in order to buy a few more players of this quality, add in a really top conditioning coach to keep themg all fit right the way through and I personally think that next season could well be one of very best ( Viduka and Yakubu still here that is ).

If any Boro players have a similar deal then upping Viduka's money from say 40K a week to 60K a week would hike the whole wage bill up for the club.

As has been said the money from the new TV deals hasnt arrived yet.

On the move itself, maybe Veruka wants a new challenge (avoiding Barton for starters). He has never stayed morethan a few years at each club.

Whatever, if true, we cant do anything about it so lets get on and sort the other problems out.

Posted by: Ian Gill  | June 5, 2007 5:03 PM

Shaun wrote...

TB, I honestly don't think it's about the money. Viduka has said this his last opportunity to move before he retires so who can blame him?

Look at the facts: Newcastle are showing some real ambition by chasing top quality players. Barton is about to sign, their sniffing around Leighton Baines and if Viduka signs, he is going to be first choice striker partnering Michael Owen.

Add to that the fact that he will be playing infront of almost double the amount that turn out at the Riverside, then it's quite an attractive offer.

I know we've talked about players thinking like us 'ordinary' folk, in that we would move somewhere if we were offered more money - but football is so much more. Players want to succeed and thrive off ambition - something the Geordies (and it kills me to say it) have plenty of.

They've hit the nail right on the head in appointing Big Sam, now he's attracting top drawer players and I wouldn't be surprised if Barton, Viduka et al were just the start of things to come...

For what it's worth, I think Viduka will struggle next year. They're going to give him that infamous number 9 shirt and expect big things all year round, not for any one part of the season where he feels like turning it on.

What we do now to fill that void, and it's a big big void, left by meathead is anyone's question.

TB I agree, it concerns me that we couldn't match whatever Newcastle offered Viduka, even if it was an extra £30k a week that is £4.5m over three years which is less than the cost of replacing him with someone of equal ability.

Not many highlights this season to be honest as potential ones seemed to deflate, superseded by bad memories (Cup run, Viduka).

Lowlight for me was watching Man City away- i've never been so distraught watching Boro.

Expect more signings of Arca's ilk that will hopefully come good. The days of signing Ravanelli's and Hasselbaink's seem to be over.

Has anyone else noticed that transfer fees of the late 90s are sneaking back? Reo Coker valued at £7m? No wonder Boro are struggling to buy players.

Don't worry though, Everton, Reading, Bolton, and Portsmouth have spent less than us in recent and years and are in the top half, so it can be done.

It has to be said, my hero has let me down big time. By signing for our most hated team, Viduka obviously didn't respect our love and affection towards him. So, I will return the favour and wish him no luck whatsoever and put him on the traitor list alongside Merson and Beagrie.

And my opinion won't change, so don't try and convince me otherwise!

If only we knew he was going to Newcastle when he walked round the pitch after the Fulham game....

'Where has all the money gone?'

What Money? We sign players for ridiculous amounts of money and never make anything when/if we sell them. We release more players than we sell.

Does anyone know which player we last bought and sold at a profit. I can't.

Viduka £4.5m - Lost on Free
Christie £1.5m - Released
Maccarone - £8.25m - Released
Ehiougu £8m - Released

There's £22.25m (plus wages) without a penny in return - and they all left in the past 6 months.

**AV writes: It is a good question. The last player I can remember leaving for a fee was Franck Queudrue (and that was 'undisclosed'). Before that? You tell me. I haven't got the big book in front of me.

Losing players without clawing some of their cost (plus wages) back is very poor asset management. What is worst is when the club pay players to leave (Ugo, Maccarone, Parlour this last season with Mendieta to follow shortly) to get them off the books.

In the days of rash pump-priming spending under Robbo the club lashed out - but generally got it back. Juninho cost £4.75m but they club got £12.3m back, there was a small profit on Barmby and Merson while Boro broke even on Ravanelli and Emerson.

If we are cutting our cloth we need to be far more prudent in our spending and we must have one eye on selling players while they are still assets. It may be that Boro need to become a "selling club" to pay their way.

A few points in no particular order.

1. Ziege cost 4m and we received 5.5m. It would have been 8m had Chelsea and Valencia not been undercut by cheating Liverpool (though Lamb is to blame)

2. Maybe Viduka doesn't owe us any particular loyalty but the Skunks? Disgraceful. We have a better side and the likes of Zenden only moved as he was going to the champions of Europe.

3. Why all this talk of "Toon this, Toon that?" Joey Barton is way overrated and give it 5mins before he rings Dyer's neck.

4. We'll do okay if we're patient and bide our time. I'd personally have kept Parnaby as although injury prone he was very adaptable and a better player than Andrew "Calamity" Davies. We should wait it out as remember it was only 9months ago we could have signed Robbie Keane for 4m. Every Prem manager should be kicking themselves over that one.

5. rarely does Alf add constructive comments. He looks for a reaction. If you stop feeding trolls they will disappear so people need to stop engaging him in conversation (duly noted that I have failed to follow my own advice but from now on will be ignoring him)

6. I pray for SWP. However, I'd wait it out until we can get someone of like quality. This Riga guy has disaster written all over him.

Every club is a selling club if the price is right, even man utd, madrid and barcelona.

Our problem is we buy too many players who are in their late 20s then by the time their contract is running out they are way past it. Its time we started investing in players who are in their early 20s then turn them into a £10-£20m player.

I'm not too bothered if we have less money to spend on players, it will just mean the club will have to do proper home work on a player now. Its about time boro picked up some rough diamonds and turned them into a valuable asset.

Unfortunatly steve mac eventually went down the same road as robson with old expensive foreign signings. Will southgate do the same in a couple of seasons when we arn't in the top half?

Having the right scouts, coaching staff and manager is more important than having big money to spend. anyone can spend £10m+ on footballers. Time will tell if southgate and co are the right people to push us up the league.

And as if to prove him right - that we are looking backwards - the rumour grows that we are to re-sign Geremi.

Not enough pace, no great shakes when he was here last time and now 4 years older. He's also probably going to miss half the season at the African Cup of Nations.

If the rumour is true the only possible saving grace is that he is being bought to play where Chelski have played him - at right back - and not, not, not in midfield where we need drive, pace and width not another plodder holding the ball up.

He's hardly going to set the pulses of other targets racing either, is he.

I can't blame Schwarz for what he's quoted as saying from Oz. It's only what we've all been saying.

It is the danger that the club courted for their behaviour - not just with Vids but many times over the years.

As to Fat Freddie - and doubtless it is just internet froth - but, well, why not if he can bring some new investment in and can work with Gibbo who I think would have to remain a majority shareholder and Chairman.

That would be why it wouldn't appeal to FF.

But what is that drivel that Count DracuLamb has been spouting about he and Gibbo being 'only the custodians of the club which is owned by the town'.

If that was true Count, you and Gibbo might listen to us once in a while, not be conspiring now to ditch our Prem future and would have a supporters trust with shares in the club and a seat on the Board.

Until then cut out the pious nonsense or move over.

It is now getting worrying about the clubs direction.

John Powls has said he gets worried if I get negative so he had better get the worry beads out.

I understand and agree with Alfs comments but I dont know if the club can do it. I am pleased with Gate but has he got the time or the support to do it?

The Swarzer comments were worrying because of the implications. It sheds a disturbing light of what is going on at the club. In any club the players from the same background will speak, that is understandable but it clearly points to the club as the culprits true or not. How does that affect potentail signings?

So who who is listening to this? Sadly it leads to yet more loan signings who will disappear after enhancing their their own prospects or players looking for the golden contract at the end of their careers.

The last season was about consolidation, as things stand we are looking at survival at best next year.

I may be reading the situation wrongly but it is a concern.

Looks like aliadiere has signed for us. Replace viduka with a striker that can't score. Just what we want. That now leaves only yakubu who can score goals in the whole squad. Another massimo in the making

Schwarzer's head will have been turned by viduka getting a lucrative contract on a free. He will have a rough idea of what viduka got. it will be making schwarzer ponder his future and next move

The head coach at the famous Clairefontaine academy in France, states "The three best strikers ever to come out of here in the past 10 years have been Nicolas Anelka, Thierry Henry and Jeremie Aliadière.

Aliadière is 24 yrs old which is why I am over the moon to see Viduka gone. His speed is incredible and thankfully he does take the ball with him at the same time.

The Yak will be next on his bike, because it was written all over his game at the latter end of the season.

Let’s have a Bellamy type of player up front to partner our new kid then we may take the pressure off our defense by attacking with constant speed and much needed aggression.

Toshack has no problems with him and neither would we, because he just wants a regular shirt and a club like the Boro would suit him fine.

Very Happy, you're dead right, its obvious what Southgate is doing, he wants to build a young, fast skillful team, hence signing Aliadiere, who is also highly rated by Wenger.

I can't believe it when I read people moaning about replacing Viduka with 'someone who can't score',. The fact is Southgate has to take a risk , young players are by definition 'unproven'. I think GS has an exciting philosophy, its a risk but one worth taking.

I also think that with the Lion King, Aliadiere and A N Other striker to comethat this will be Yaks last season at Boro, GS is going to do what AV thinks is the way forward and sell him at a profit in a years time.....watch this space.

I was disapointed to see Viduka go, I thought he was a terrific player, but he's history now and its time to look forward, which I do with eager anticipation.

One final thing, relax JP Geremi ain't coming he doesn't fit the profile.

Have a good read of Anthony Vicker’s feature dated May 15th 2007, because it leaves no stones unturned.

Gareth is now his own man and those who have left the club are history. Yakabu will be next out regardless of whatever has been spoken or printed.

He cannot even hold the ball up when it is passed to him, because he lacks both the pace and the conviction which comes with the shirt.

Our defenders deserve to see the same effort in front of them, which has not been the case. Two new strikers however, will not solve our problems, because we need to find a young Ray Parlour to drive our midfield forward.

I would get shot of Boetang come January as well, because his heart and his pace have widened to such an extent that he is no more than a stopper.

Midfield players are no good if they do not score goals. At least the Rock will have a go even though most of his shots end up near Marks and Spencer’s.

McClaren said he dropped Beckham to waken his game up. It was that goon who left us next to the river without a paddle. Steve Gibson is his own man and I thank the Lord we have him as our chairman.

However, after the UEFA Cup final McClaren should have been sacked immediately, because we never lost the game, he gave it away.

People should always air their comments and never be afraid of backlash if you want to see OUR club prosper and progress.

Alf..In answer to your question about doubting the ability of Jeremie Aliadière let me say this.

When we brought Woodgate to the Riverside he was almost classed as a crippled reject, by Real Madrid.

Look what happens when the right people get a grip of your future. He would never have expected to have played for England in his wildest dreams.

Nothing comes guaranteed in football except the result. Therefore, let Jeremie Aliadière have a fair crack of the whip.

Gareth Southgate won't get many chances to move the club on due to the transer window.

We want new faces and a new spirit and perhaps then we might score goals from all quarters.

Ive said before that Aliadiere would be a panic buy, I still think he is however I am now hoping that he does what David Bently has done. Bently was only a squad player like Aliadiere however given a regular run in his prefered position he has come good and forced his way into the international scene. Hopefully Aliadiere will do the same.

He played a lot of games out wide for arsenal and there must be something about him as he is one of their longest serving players and wenger wont keep anyone who is rubbish for that long. Basically what I'm saying is if he does eventually sign then he has my backing as he will be a boro player.

My only concern is that with viduka gone and Yak seemingly unsettled, our next highest scorer was arca on 3. Where are the goals going to come from?

There is also the possibility of the Yak going to the African Nations Cup. So our main scorer at the minute, who during his Boro career gets all his goals mid season before February, could be missing!

There is talk of this Riga bloke coming, if he can keep up his scoring record then i think this will be good for us.

However I dont see why we are going after yet more forigners. We have a young right winger in our acadamy that apparently has all the top clubs in the uk and europe after him. Nathan Porrit could solve the probmatic right hand side yet we seem happy to let him go! yet another one through the net.
