Lion King Yet To Roar

Posted by on April 11, 2007 11:12 AM |

DONG GOOK Lee.... it's Korean for Missimo! Top Gazette soccer brains have had the cuttings book and calculator out today and worked out that The Lion King has now played five hours and 13 minutes of football in England and not scored a goal. That's long enough to watch two thirds of the Lord of the Rings trilogy (the new tabloid SI unit of football time, just as football pitches and countries the size of Wales are official measurements of area), eat three full parmos or build a scale model of Ayresome Park from matchsticks.

Of course, that damning time tally includes several stints in the stiffs, one full half in the Premiership and a few brief cameos plus extra-time in the cp against West Brom. In the first team it adds up to barely 90 minutes (and certainly not 90 continuous minutes) yet in the hot-house world of football snap judgements that is more than enough for many to decide GD Lee is not up to the job. And don't confuse the issue by pointing to the fact that Yakubu has gone seven games - that's ten and a half hours, or a whole season for Robert Huth - without scoring.

He hit the post against Reading in his first outing, hit the upright again from the penalty spot in the shoot-out wit the Baggies then at Newcastle he was repeatedly brushed off the ball - once by Nobby Solano - and the optimism drained away to be replaced by cynicism.

The reality is that the frighteningly monikered 'Lazy Genius' is nowhere near ready for the Premiership. So far the nearest thing to an offensive threat has been posed by his badly bleached hair. He has come to a new country where he doesn't speak the lingo, a new culture that takes some getting used to and a completely different game with a far faster tempo and more physical approach so there should really be no surprise that he is struggling to make his mark. A few low key games in the stiffs won't help him bridge the gap, he will need a full pre-season to get up to the levels of athleticism needed to survive.

gdlee.jpg

That he isn't ready is recognised by the bench. That is why in recent games Malcolm Christie, a man who is out of contract out in the summer and has never really been anything more than an enthusiastic worker, and towering defender Huth used as a makeshift targetman have been used ahead of him as substitutes. Against Watford at 3-1 up and in complete control in the Sun there would never have been a better time to give him a chance to show what he could do. That he got only a fleeting late outing speaks volumes.

With Christie lurking by the exit door and Maccarone finally shifted Boro are striker light. If Boro are to compete - and assuming Viduka stays - they will need a proven frontman who can step straight into the team next season and score goals. Lee has yet to show he is that man and so Boro need to start the search now. If the Korean finds his feet and comes back next season as anything more deadly than the new Malcolm Christie, a fourth choice workhorse, then that will be a big bonus - but you wouldn't like to think he is pencilled in for a starting position just yet.

AV - As you have said Dong Gook can not be judged until he has beefed up on parmo's and done a full pre-season.

If Viduka stays he will only be a bit part player at best.

He may end up seeing out his contract without starting another PL game.

As I suggested on another thread Nicklas Bendtner as a replacement for Viduka if he leaves, or better still as JP posted as an understudy to Viduka.

I also think that Boro could possibly take a chance on Billy Sharp from Scunthorpe, he may just turn out to be classed in the same bracket as Nugent when he is a success in next season's Championship.

He aint upto the job really, he is only here for 18 months so not got time on his hands and needed a work permit.

We get rid of massimo then we bring in the korean. I think he was just signed cos Southgate got approached by someone saying he was available and thought he would give him a chance going on his past reputation.

I just cant see him being ahead of yakubu or viduka next season. I just dont know why we really signed him.

You're spot on - the problem's not Simba, at least not yet anyway. He may turn out to be, as Holgate Ender eloquently puts it, 'rubbish'. But if anyone thought he was going to be a success in anything like the early days they were deluded.

If we were as safe as we should have been by now (oh for not playing a weakened side against Citeh and the point we could have had at least at Upton Park - there's 4 for a start) we could have given Simba a trot out in a few games along with the likes of Tony Mc coming back from a long lay-off. But we can't afford that so, as you say, it's pre-season and parmo therapy.

No, the problem was not investing in the January window so we need to invest now, whether on not Vids sucumbs to the delights of Genoa.

Along with Bendtner and Nugent (and leaving aside Aliadiere; if we're going to bid for him we should use his pace wide right, not as one of a front two) and Sharp I think we could also usefully think about Beattie from Everton (if Vids goes) who is being overtaken by Everton's kids in the pecking order but who those who are close to him and whose opinion I value rate him. Also there is Kamara - the Wigan version not the West Brom poseur.

Dont show your age, you will be talking next about Muffin the Mule before it was a criminal offence.

(I bet that gets cut, a bit like a part of my anatomy when I got the answer right at a New Years party - up to you AV but the mule seemed happy. I dont think it is a good a line as a Square Peg in Rounds hole as mentioned by JP but the best I can do this time of night).

Luckily 'The Lion King' has only another year and a bit to run on his contract. The obvious comment is that our January window signings have not normally been succesful so need time, look how well Christie and Ricketts did. Most need a pre season.

An interim report would be could do better but dont sit oof the end of Saltburn pier holding your breath at full tide or 10.30pm on a Saturday waiting for the Boro to appear on MOTD when we have won.

why rush in and sign someone after a trial when you know he wont hardly feature until the end of the season?

Surely from the trial they must have been able to tell that he will take longer than a few months to adjust?

No point bringing anyone in in january unless you know he will play a significant part int he season. may aswell jsut kept massimo instead

Blame Keith Lamb.

Give Steve Gibson a sainthood.

Moan about been stuck in the subway.

We always lose at home to Villa is another, but its time for a change and I think that Boro will win 3 - 1.

You can't beat a few Boro traditions.

Ian Gill wrote...

There is some sense in pre-emptive scapegoating for several reasons.

The first is that you can be a trend setter and not just a follower of fashion. What it may lead to is an increase in attendance at the youth and academy games. This will allow people to say he was useless in the juniors and was never going to make it in the first team.

The really smooth operators will extend their operations overseas - went to Valencia's training ground whilst I was staying in Benidorm and he was pants then.

The final benefit is that is you can scapegoat early you can avoid the rush.

A final thought is why dont we have a scapegoat of the match, month and season competition. We could have different categories, young scapegoat of the year, overseas scapegoat of the year, not forgetting the scapegoats scapegoat of the year.

The Gazette could run a competition for the fans to vote on their choice of scapegoat - plenty of opportunity for premium rate calls there AV, can I have royalties?

*AV writes: This blog is getting some new bells and whistles onn and one of the optionsis for a poll. Maybe we should give a Scapegoat of the Match a whirl.

What made it even more bizarre is that we had a look at him on trial. Pointless signing him in january if he wont be ready until august.. thats over 6 months wait

never happy, i'm not privy to his contract but i think you are coming across a bit naive when it come to players negotiating a contract through an agent. ie using another club to get his player a better contract. Football is all about money these days and the more negotiations are discussed in the press the more its for PR spin.

All i can say is there must be no offers for Viduka yet if his agent has to use a club in seria B to get boro panicking. Ever thought that boro may have the upper hand because no one has shown interest in viduka? With regards to Genoa or abroad, if he was really going to go there he would have signed a pre-contract agreement by now.

On the harsh side of fair AV.

Perhaps it was simply a case of the coaching staff recognising the potential, albeit for the coming season and their desire not to see him go elsewhere.

I can't recall how much we paid and what sort of contract he is on, but I've a feeling both were on the low side. Gareth may just have judged that it was worth a punt and I would agree.

We seem to have this panic with at least one player who is out of contract in the summer.

Last season it was Boateng who decided to stay when nothing else materialised. Year before it was Zenden but he only left because a top 4 team came in for him.

Now it is Viduka. He will stay unless one of the big 4 come in for him. If they dont then we get Viduka on our terms. If they do then he leaves no matter what we offer him.

Alf - are you saying Gibson paid 3m on top of the 7.5m Yakubu cost? As far as I know the total price was 7.5m and Yakubu has been worth it. His deal was complicated because he was owned by two clubs.

No answer to my question on how you have decided that Viduka wants an £8m contract over 3 years.

You slag off the club for having anything to do with agents, then have a go at GS for not having an agent.

GS may not have had an agent but still managed to play for his country over 50 times whilst playing for Palace, Villa and Boro.

You would have probably have been happier if he had left the Boro and then it would have given you something else to whinge about.

neverhappy, we paid £3M to that super agent gadge. who then give some of it some other agent who boro deal with a lot. That £3m was on top of what we paid for the player.

with an agent southgate could have possibly got himself to a bigger and more successful club. Lets be honest here, with 50 caps his league career could have been a lot more successful.

£8m deal for viduka with genoa, well thats what his agent has said. probably made up by his agent. but what i've been told viduka is holding out for a 3 year deal at boro worth £40k per week. boro only want to give him 2 years.

Difference between me and you is that i have the clubs interest at heart and dont want to see the fans being fleeced for money that is going to agents and such like.

i also want the club to be realistic when offering players new contract. DOnt be held to ransom and if a player wants too much money then tough let him go, ideally i want players who want to play for the club and not motivated by what money we offer them.

Mr Vickers, Its the first time I have to say your wrong. Firstly Robert Huth scored against Tottenham thats how he got his injury remember, tut tut!

Secondly give kid a chance, everyone laid into Drogbra for example and after a season of getting used to the premiership he is bagging them in.

Now i ain't saying he is on par with Drogba but what I am saying is give the kid a chance. Its a totally different game, atmosphere, culture etc.

If you've seen this kid play you will see he's getting in the right places, has some pace and is at least trying unlike some that expect to get paid for nothing.

Come on boro against the Villa

Alf - I question where you get your info from and you have the clubs interests at heart and I don't.

Please tell me where I have posted and have not supported the club in anyway.

At the moment agents are here to stay and the club has to deal with them.

If you think the club can sign players without agents being involved then it is you who is being naive.

The club has offered Viduka a contract, just the same as it did with Boteng and Zenden.

It is up to Viduka to decline or accept.

I do not think the club is being held to ransom, and posting what you think his agent has asked for means nothing.

All good players are touted around by their agents even if they are under contract, look at the fees being mentioned for Ronaldho.

Agents are a stain on the game and are even greedier than the players.

However as I have said they are here to stay, we can only hope that the powers that be get tougher with them and at least get rid of those who continually flout the rules.

AV, did I hear you say something about Massimo ??????

Joking apart, this mentality is all wrong and it just goes to show that the powers that be at the Boro haven't learned a damn thing, and neither has GS and all of his staff.

This Korean fella was on trial for a couple of weeks and GS publicly said he was incredibly impressed.

Right then, if you like what you see then you BUY WHAT YOU SEE and then play to their strengths.

You don't then throw them in the gym in a frantic attempt to build them up just because of that age old chestnut that the Premiership is a physical league.

If GS and co wanted someone who has what they deem is needed to cope in this league then they should've bought the finished product and not wasted time with this guy.

The mentality is wrong. The approach is wrong. It's ALL WRONG.

My advice to GS and co for next time is to buy home grown English lads as it seems that rightly or wrongly that's what they are looking for anyway.

I think your £400,000 per place prize money is few years out of date, I think it is closer to £800,000.

The point you are making is correct that we have to go all out in all the matches until the seasons end. It isnt just the prize money either, people are paying good money for their seats so deserve to be shown some respect unlike in the Citeh match. Fans expect to see the team they are supporting turn up and try.

I was going to go to the match on the way to drop my son off in Toon but we are going up Sunday instead so will miss the game. Lets hope I regret it as much as I regretted making the journey up for the Citeh game.

The good news for those going is that I am a jinx and have witnessed most of the capitulations live or on TV.
