John Bull Takes A Tumble

Posted by on March 29, 2007 10:33 AM |

PATRIOTS: if thine own eye offend you.... amid the spluttering of indignation at England only winning, the forensic fury from the poison pens aimed at the boss and a flurry of doughnut and root vegetable based cartoon character assassinations there seemed little room to point out the latest penalty box am-dram acrobatics for the benefit of the referee.

We hear much about Johnny Foreigner being particular being adept at the art of the tumble and how this alien virus is damaging the game and the standards we true English hearts alone fight to defend. Hold on - that dive by Steven Gerrard was pathetic!

Yes, Stevie G, the epitome of English honesty and the man in who the press have invested all their post-Beckham hopes of a hero (the spud-faced granny botherer is too Tourettes prone and volatile to be trusted with the mantle of flag bearer)... dived!

That will be the same Stevie G that asked about dirty diegos who set out to cheat England's golden generation of their World Cup birthright said this:

"It annoys me. I don't think there is anything worse than seeing not just a foreign player but any player who has received a knock lying down on the floor to get an opponent booked - or diving when no one's been anywhere near him, If I saw a team-mate doing it I would definitely have a word. It's happened here at Liverpool a couple of times, where players have gone down too easily, and the manager has said: 'Get up, get on with it, don't be doing that. It's wrong'.
"I think managers and captains, leaders and experienced players have a responsibility to grab people after a training session or a game and say 'None of that. That doesn't happen here'."

So will he be expecting Mr McClaren to take him to task? Of course not. He knows that the manager has far bigger problems that inept acrobatics. And will the press highlight the issue? Not while they have pages of bile to discharge on the new Turnip. And what about the fans? Will they turn on this cheat and drive him out of the game? No, they are too busy booing the best - possibly only - specialist left sided flanker and crosser in the country.

Every club has its divers, play actors, time wasters, injury fakers, just that it is only mentioned when the opposition team are at wrong end of it.

At Boro Yakubu knows the art of getting a penalty from the touch of a feather. I remember Boateng faking a face injury at the riverside a few years ago, but in his recent frustrations he had a go at Ronaldo.

If it had been an Andorra players doing it we would be screaming for him to be booked.

With camera technology, I would like to see some of the football slush fund diverted towards paying 100 people to watch recorded games and pick out players who dived and then they can give them a yellow card even afte rthe game has finished.

It just annoys me when you look at rugby and see no back chat, cheating or diving, or play acting. At least in rugby if a player throws a punch its a proper punch, not handbags. why cant football be disciplined like rugby players? Why do footballers have to act like 13 year olds on and off the pitch?

I think it needs to start from the top. A players dives and his manager says it was a foul the opposition manager says it wasnt a foul. 1 month later its the otherway round.

It's about time managers came out and openly criticised their players for diving. unfortunatly all too often we now here 'There was contact in the box so he had every right to go down' @copyright of alan shearer.

Surely if it werent a foul in the centre circle then its shouldnt be in the box. As far as I know there is no rule to say if there is contact int he box it is a penalty.

Last season at boro viduka, jfh and yakubu were experts at getting free kicks around the edge of the penalty area.

when you watch some of these dives, they defy the law of physics. For example pulling someones shirt from behind doesnt mean the player falls forward. In fact he should fall backwards which rarely happens. Their legs tend to go first even if the contact is the upper body..that just not physics

This issue will be unresolved forever as nobody at the top of the FA has the bottle to tackle the issue.

On another issue, surely Stewie is suffering from guilt by association where Mac is concerned. I'm sure he wouldn't be getting half the abuse if Mac wasn't his ex. manager.

The natural solution is to sack mcclown then appoint venables as caretaker manager. until we have either failed to qualify or after euro2008 if we qualify.

Players will respond and respect venables more. Remember how venables sorted out Boksic. there needs to be harmony within the dressing room and the right noises coming out in the media and the fans are more settled with venables

I posted on the main board about dives that were disgraceful and included Gerrards against Hungary. Now we can add the one against those giants of the world game Andorra.

If you make a rash tackle and catch the player who then goes down that is one thing, to throw yourself with no contact is disgraceful as is rolling around claiming your leg is amputated.

The football authorities should use video evidence and impose suitable penalties on players. If a player dives he should get the punishment that would be meted out to the player he tried to cheat would have got. Last man - red card, goal scoring opportunity - red card.

Come on now, it was a definite penalty, wasn't it? If Ronaldo's two "dives" against Boro were penalties then Gerrard's must be a stonewaller!

When Ronaldo blatently dived against Boro, the pundits were falling over themselves to defend Ronaldo's cheating and lauding him in a sickening way. But, then again, you have to think who got the penalty and who the oposition are. Could you imagine the pundits being so adamant if that Ronaldo penalty had been given against virually any other club in the premiership, especially the big four?

If, for instance, Viduka had dived in exactly the same way and we had got a penalty (very, very unlikely but just imagine...), would these pundits have given the same verdict on Viduka's claim? No chance!!

The same bias is being shown against poor Downing. I'm sure all Boro fans were hoping that Downing would play a blinder to shove the critics' poisonous views back down their throats. But, if he had, would he have been lauded, or would they have just not acknowledged him at all? It seems that no acknowledgement means that a Boro player must have played well!

The fact that Downing is getting so much stick is due only in small part to having played under McClaren at club level.

The truth is, it is because he plays for Boro. It's that simple. The hacks who work for the gutter press love any opportunity to snipe at Boro.

He comes from the wrong part of the country (Teesside) and plays for the wrong club. It isn't just because he is from the North East. If he was a Geordie playing for Newcastle he wouldn't get anywhere near as much stick. For some reason, Newcastle are liked much more, outside of the North East, than Middlesbrough. They've probably all fell for the Geordie propaganda.

Boro are despised outside of Teesside. Our persecution complexes are entirely justified and have been formed with good reason. As I've said before, we never get fairness towards us outside of Teesside. Even the referees are biased against us AT the Riverside!

I hope that one day we have several players in the England first team. It might just happen, since our academy is producing good players and others clubs are not. I'd love to see England have to rely on our players. Let's see what their attitude towards the Boro is like then!

i too am sick of the stick stewie gets when he pulls on an england shirt, if tomorro he went to man u he would be the golden left winger. to be honest though he does look a bit nervous when he plays for england, like slightly inhibited but i think given a run in the team he would do well.

the media obsession with (for reasons unknown) hatred of teesside does interest me however. i mean we did have the first railway line and according to that roundabout (which im not sure is still there) are home to the friction match among many other achivements, so why the raw deal??

and to further emphasise the point, i am in newcastle at uni and my best mate is from northern ireland. he was saying how he doesnt count n. ireland as being part of the UK (dispite being a protestant lol) and then went on to say that he doesnt count teesside as being part of the UK (he has been with me a few times).

i then informed him of the Peoples Republic of Teesside.
