No Slack For Southgate Shuffle

Posted by on November 10, 2006 11:04 PM |

HEADS must roll said Bernie in his Gazette column yesterday. But which heads? Boro's squad is wafer thin so even the most inconsistent and accident prone first teamers must feel as secure in their position as Stuart Bell.

The youngsters have great potential but playing more than one or two of them would be a massive risk - and if we are honest there are more than one or two in the first team who are under-performing to the point where they no longer justify their place. But who would you drop?

Yakubu? Would you drop Boro's unconvincing targetman? A player so weak with his head that team-mates laughed when he nodded home against Newcastle but who is expected to challenge for habitual long punts forward? A player who likes the ball played in front on him to run onto but but more often finds himself coming deep to collect the ball with his back to goal as if he were Mark Viduka? Drop him because he is suffering from a lack of support and play who exactly? Maccarone, a man who has had more last chances than Paul Gascoigne? Or Danny Graham? He will run all day but it takes more than industry to prise open defences. Maybe Malcom Christie will come to the rescue

How about George Boateng? Would you throw a political hand-grenade into the changies and drop the skipper? Yes, the once metronomic midfield general has been as off-song as a tone deaf society karaoke contest for weeks now but what is the alternative? Rochemback? The Brazilian has a fine array of back-heeled nutmegs and dragbacks but is repeatedly beaten for pace, frequently dispossessed, misses tackles in dangerous areas and too often his visionary 60 yard crossfield passes bounce into touch. Cattermole? The young dynamo adds zest and bite to the middle but his inexperience shows as he dashes after the player with the ball only to arrive as it zips through the space where he had been. I like him but barring emergencies I would't give him the solo holding role, especially alongside Rocky.

What about on the right? Drop Morrison and play who? Mendieta? Is he still alive? Is he still in England? In the past few weeks that problematic role has been filled by a defensive midfielder, a left winger and a player who is nominally a left-back.

And what about at the back? The defence has been largely an effective unit and it is the structural faults in an unbalanced midfield that has invited the pressure it has found itself under so the selection problems are different. But would you drop Pogatetz from left-back where his discomfort on the ball so often results in the hoof in favour of Andrew Taylor, more fluid going forward, or maybe Julio Arca? And if you did would you move Mad Dog inside where he was so effective early on and then maybe toss a coin to decide on whether Real Madrid loanee Woodgate or £6m new signing Huth made way to accomodate him? What about on the right? Big hearted Davies or veteran Xavier after a year out?

Gareth Southgate has a momentous task in freshening Boro up given the resources at his disposal. Short-sighted recruitment policies in recent years - particularly in bringing in a right winger - have left him very few options. There is very little cover in some key roles leaving Boro one-dimensional and only a few injuries or suspensions away from disaster. The boss doesn't have the option of wholesale changes. He can't wield the axe without hampering the team.

I must confess to a bout of pessimism but I can't see how Southgate can fundamentally alter what we have now - an unbalanced, leftocentric team lacking pace and creativity and suffering a dip in confiudence - let alone reshape it with an attacking outlook. Roll on January.

Sadly January is some matches away and when you bring someone in it is normally towards the end of the month. Allowing time to settle in means that in reality it is up to what we have already if we wish to avoid a nail biting end to the season.

With what we've got now we should be playing a Venables style fluid 3-5-2 going forward, 4-4-2 in defence. Gate has played this many times himself and understands it. Woodie has spoken positively about it too.

That, for me, means dropping Dava, I'm afraid - tough choice, but he offers little going forward and we're not short of height at the back. I wouldn't replace him with the Peroxide Portugueeezer - in fact no conventional right back right back at all.

In midfield, The Boat should be told to stick to doing a Makelele and nothing else; get the ball, break up attacks and short forward passes to Catts and Mozza on the right or Stewie and Tayls on the left.

Both these pairs are almost interchangable so we can work out to in or vice versa on both flanks. When tucked in with Tayls outside him, Stewie should be told to 'do a Bolo' - the role we've never replaced and which Bolo himself gave a masterly display of in the League Cup in the week. When Tayls tucks in Stewie can 'do a Stewie' on the left wing.

Up front we need The Yak - but played as he needs to be - free to roam. No problem about him starting left side so long as he is disciplined to keep a high starting position so he doesn't cramp Tayls and Stewie. He should always be side on to receive a ball into feet or - more hopefully - just ahead of a run and ON THE DECK!

Until Veruka is fit to complement The Yak the nearest we have in style - bigger bustling, fight for the headers, physical challenge etc is Danny Graham. The others are all too similar and have all failed repeatedly when called on.

Both The Yak and Danny have to be told that the defending starts from them and that their back 4 and defensive midfield should not get a second's rest or any time on the ball unchallenged.

So - Schwarz, back 3 - Huth, Woodie and Pogo; midfield - Mozza, Catts, The Boat, Stewie and Tayls: up front - The Yak and Danny Graham. Subs - Arca, Dava, Rocky and Euell or Macca or Christie.

We go basically 3-5-2 and especially for going forward and when the play is balanced in midfield. When pushed back Tayls drops into a conventional left back leaving us with a middle 4. In defense with Tayls we have Pogo and Woodie in a balanced central pairing and Huth goes out to right back - a role he has played for Chelski and Germany.

In additon - and it's not something I suggest lightly - The Boat should be elevated to Club Captain but Woodie should be Team Captain. The dual role on the field doesn't suit The Boat, whatever he says.

As to 'Roll on January'? Well, first of all, why are we waiting until January? For us that always means January 31st and the dregs. Spurs have started signing players now under agreements activated when the window opens.

We all know the list to go out. Ugo, Mendi, Romford Ray, Christie, Macca. Some of them would make good fodder for cash plus player deals.

We need to decide if to keep Veruka. If not, he has to be replaced. Giving Danny Graham a run now will tell us if we have to buy 2 strikers or just one.

Targets? Nugent, certainly. Robbie Keane is a possibility but I don't see him being prised from Spurs. Defoe, if he keeps being left out but he's a London lad and wouldn't be tempted out except for maybe ManUre.

Where are the Veruka replacements though? Not sure I see them around the Prem. Maybe Mido from Spurs if he can't get a game for Berbatov. So we should probably hang on to Veruka and extend his contract now rather than have him hanging round the Barcodes training ground again on January 31st.

In midfield on the right side - for me the outstanding candidate is Stephen Appiah. We know his people, he wants away from Fenerbahce and is plenty rugged enough for the Prem as well as having pace, a pass and a shot. He can play wide right or tucked in and is happy to run the midfield. The other alternative is Gera from The Baggies.

Our big problem, though, is going to be keeping our head above water until January - necessary anyway but how will we attract anyone worthwhile if we're still struggling? Nugent and Gera may well feel that they are coming to the Prem with their own teams and are getting plenty of win bonuses. Gera is probably still on a Prem contract.

Let's get on to it now, please. (Despite the idiotic self-inflicted game of 'who's the manager' we're still playing. Having a Van Gaal or similar in as director of football would certainly help all round)

Interesting thoughts Vic and John, I firmly believe we have the fixtures and the squad to get a few points before January, even enough to keep us away from the scrap. I don't think it will be pretty or exciting but with our defence, Stuey and Yak we have more to be happy about than a lot of the rubbish around us.

The 4 4 2 / 3 5 2 idea sounds a little ambitious but players need to be flexible these days so who knows? maybe it's worth a shot. What we do need is a shape and a plan, if every player knows their job and sticks to it then that is a start. This is the basic philosophy of O'Neal's teams.

As you say John, that means George breaking the play up, Stewy attacking and crossing, Cattermole providing the runs from midfield. The big problem we have is we are really down to one striker. Yakubu needs a partner, he's a big strong lad but his pace and power are more suited to running at plyers and commiting them rather than holding the ball up as a target man. I was surprised that him and Veruka didn't compliment each other better. Perhaps it will come with time.

With regards to the likes of Graham, Christie and Maccarone. Maccarone is a sub and a decent one at that. The other two...well they either have it or they need to go. We cant afford to pussy foot around. They need a run of games not 10 minutes here or there. If they don't produce after say five premiership games, then I'm afraid it should be a case of thank you and goodbye.

I'd love to see two (youngish) English strikers do it for us but, when it really boils down to it if they don't produce then we need proven premiership quality. That costs big bucks. On average there are only three or four strikers who pass the fifteen goal mark.

We're nowhere near the front of the queue for those so it is going to be very difficult indeed. The likes of Nugent, Eastwood etc are worth a gamble. Even Sharp of Scunthorpe looks, er, sharp.

Proven premiership goalscorers are thin on the ground, we perhaps need to create one from potential. I hope I am wrong but Graham and Christie would maybe have realised theirs by now.

Everybody agrees who has to go, but the pension seekers may have few takers.

GS has a tough job, and yes maybe a helping hand wouldn't go a miss. Enter Dalglish, Rioch or maybe a top class experienced coach like Kidd.

Round and Harrison get the odd slagging off but are highly rated within the game. The reserves are near the top of the league. I don't think the infrastructure is that bad but Gareth could do with an expericed shoulder to cry on.

Whatever happens if Middlesbrough FC is going to go forward then we need to do it with more than the 25000 that turned out yesterday. To attract crowds we need attacking football. To attack we need forwards.

Vicous circle, thats an understatement.

Good luck Gareth, don't anybody tell me that a uefa pro licence would solve his striker problems neither.
