Dazed And Confused Over Huth Deal

Posted by on September 1, 2006 9:15 AM |

IT'S STAGGERING. It is 9.15 and the Huth deal is in a state of utter confusion. The Boro press office don't know if the deal has been completed or whether there will be a press conference at Hurworth today. No one has told them one way or another and they say they don't know where the Sky Sports News Boro claim it has gone through even came from. Incredible.

The Chelsea press office is in similar disarray. Their spin doctor doesn't know. Give me ten minutes he says. We ring back after nine and he prevaricates for a while then says a statement will be made imminently but has no idea what it will contain.

Why does no one know? Football is covered comprehensively by a 24 hour rolling news juggernaut. If an England player farts it is given the 'breaking news' yellow banner treatment. How can no one know about the £6m transfer of an international between two Premiership clubs with slick media operations and linked to Sky by an umbilical cord of cash?

The BBC and Sky Sports both earlier reported that it had fallen through and Chelsea pulled the plug because they need cover after selling Gallas but both have since edited their on-line stories, presumably covering their backs after the 8.30am Boro 'claim'.

Meanwhile a phone call to Huth's agent Manfred Schultze brings no joy either. He is not available and the assistant is unable to tell us whether the company has just engineered a lucrative £6m move or not. We couldn't contact Lambie and Gibson was not available.

Radio stations, PA, Reuters, both clubs and his agent.... no one seems to know. And reporters from other papers and punters are ringing us to get to the nub. We don't know either. Wake up Lamby! Rise and shine Kenyon. Get your fingers out. TELL US WHAT HAS HAPPENED!

Wahay, it's 9.44 and a story finally pops up on Sky Sport News website saying "Keith Lamb has told (us) that the transfer was registered before the close of the window." But there are no quotes. It could be a telephone hoaxer ringing in.

Checking back with Chelsea and two paragraphs have appeared on the website. No quotes, no categorical statement that he has 'joined' Boro, only that the deal has been agreed. But we knew that already. And the headline is 'Huth Deal Agreed.' That strikes me as strange. That is yesterday's story. On the Chelsea website surely it would say 'Huth Leaves Chelsea' or 'Blues Bye Bye To Boro Bound Bob' or whatever. Curiouser and curiouser.

At the same time the BBC say the deal has been completed but again, no quotes. And PA send a snap saying Chelsea have confirmed it but appear to have taken that from the website which by my reading doesn't confirm it at all.

It looks like the respective deals have been done both chief executives have gone to bed late and happy without taking the time to send a text, an answer-phone message or stick a post-it note on their press office door to pass on the news. They haven't informed the media, they haven't informed the fans and they haven't informed their own spin machine. What a shambles.

*Update.... 11am and still no official confirmation.

*Update... Press conference at 2pm but no news on whether Huth will be there.

A shambles indeed, but par for the course with Boro's PR department!

The statement on the Chelsea website is worded in exactly the same way as the one that announces they have 'signed' Ashley Cole.

I don't see any members of the media running around questioning whether that deal has been 'completed'.

Unprofessional - again.

Mr. Gibson should have an urgent look at the way the commercial side of the club is run.

Remember also:
Diego Forlan
Eindhoven
Online ticket purchases
Any Boro PR (spin)
Top drawer manager
etc etc.
and then ask why the club seem so far removed from its fans.

Then why is there nothing at all on the MFC website and why the secrecy?

I think that the reason people aren't questioning the deal is because the Cole signing has been announced by the Chelsea PR people. There has been no official statement from Boro saying we have signed Huth.

Furthermore, mfc.co.uk is full of stories and news about Woodgate and Euell - there isn't a single story about Huth since midday yesterday. I don't think that any of this is Boro' or Huth's fault - I think the problem lies with Chelsea.

He was signed.
Official website now has loads of bumpf about him. BBC and Sky websites say he was signed. He is a Boro Boy.
All the uncertainty was the fault of Chelsea, playing silly games with us 'lesser mortals'

I was seriously suicidal last night at midnight and again this morning when no news broke on Huth! I was for going down to Chelski and nuttin' Kenyon for not signing the piece of paper. I nearly posted abusive comments on their website. This is just not me - I'm usually a perfectly calm and rational humanoid.

So when I calmed down and realised that we might have completed the deal after all, I came to my senses and realised the obvious truth - all this is yet another club communications cock-up! How much longer will we have to put up with this incompetence?

Anthony - presumably somebody at the Gazette will express to MFC your frustrations and those of thousands of hapless fans kept unacceptably in the dark? They need to get the message (AGAIN! So soon after Eindhoven) that the natives are decidedly dischuffed.

Well, I am back. If you think it was tricky following the Huth saga you should try it in the middle of Cornwall with no internet.

Went to bed at midnight convinced he hadnt signed then low and behold on Skysports news before the family got up was banner running across the screen that we had signed Huth.

Still no right sided midfdielder and have briefly glanced at some of the post pompey blog. Gate will just have to bite the bullet and play Morrison. Over the last couple of years we have tried Parlour, Roch, Mendi, Mass, Parnaby. Give Morrison a decent run because any of the above plus Cat and Boat leaves Downing as a sitting duck.

Pleased we have brought in some cover at the back because from the what I heard from my lad the back four against Pompey was like leaving a cod in charge of a history lesson - all at sea.

Still beggars my point made a little while ago, if we couldnt get together a decent team from what we had what were we paying them for?

The Huth deal was certainly a saga but hopefully a good deal. He seems to be a player with integrity which is rare. I'm a big Woodgate fan too so there's reasons for optimism after the disaster that was Portsmouth
