"He's Like Messy In Training"
MIDO is a man who lives in a permanant whirlwind of tangled red tape, loose ends and the flapping, tattered shards of broken contractual and moral obligations. The heavyweight hitman is a scissor-throwing, dummy-spitting ball of tortured petulance and unfulfilled talent who screams at coaches, berates team mates and blames everyone else but himself.
And now the perma-crocked serial sulker and his charmless bubble of brooding indignant estrangement are back at Hurworth. Great. Just what we need as the age of austerity starst to bite: the gleaming white Roller taking up three parking spaces and disgorging the poisonous playboy prince.
Last week Mogga made the tongue in cheek claim that Jonathan Franks looked like a bit like Barcelona dreamweaver Lionel Messi in training. Now there is someone trundling around around who is more like Mr Messy.
Everywhere Mido goes he leaves a chaotic mess behind him: coaches frustrated at his fitness levels and inability to turn big talk and undoubted talent into concrete and consistent performances on the pitch; fans alienated and divided; club officials confused over his contract status; himself angrier than ever at the rest of the world's failure to fall into step. The current situation is the default. He has stomped off from Ajax leaving his registration in limbo and two clubs at loggerheads over who should pick up the pieces he has left littered in his wake. It is a mess.
In a nut-shell the situation is this: he joined Ajax on a season long loan. He is registered as their player and until they dissolve that contract he can not play for Boro or any other club, even assuming he could find one unaware of his chequered past.
Even if Ajax tear up his registration Boro will not take up the option. FIFA rules say you can only play for two clubs in one season. If Boro register him now no other club - should KFC Mugospor or Klub Daaft get desperate on deadline day- can sign him.
He has unilaterally left Ajax - new coach Frank de Boer still naively wants him and believes he can be a key player if he can get fit - and returned to Boro, who are still technically his parent club. But Boro don't want him. They don't want a hand-grenade in the dressing room and they certainly don't want to foot his wages again. They don't want him training with the first team and they don't want Ajax to return his registration.
Boro want Ajax to either build bridges and take him back or find another club to slip the Black Spot to, to give him a free and get them to take up the terms of his loan deal. And quickly. It is a situation that mirrors the mess of last January when he was crowbarred out of Zamalek and had to engineer an inpenetrable "ã1,000 a week" deal with West Ham where he enjoyed a three game honeymoon before fizzling out into anonymity.
In the summer his agent contacted every top flight team in Europe's second string leagues to no avail before falling lucky and catching Martin Jol in a nostaligic mood and playing the emotional card with the fans at the club he had 'always loved'. Getting him out was Boro's biggest transfer coup last summer. But it will be far harder to find a sucker to take him this time. Which is a major headache for Boro.
The last thing we want is the ghost of a bloated past creaking around Hurworth as Mogga tries to rebuild a team with a new austere mentality. Yet they need him fit if he is to find a club. And they can't tell him to train on his own because he won't. He is not the sort to take it upon himself to go running up Roseberry Topping. Or Redcar beach. Not now they have closed the McDonalds in the town.
It is a mess. His whole career has been a mess. What Boro were thinking in the first place is beyond me. It was a panic buy that backfired and has cost Boro the best part of ã12m in fee and wages. His fitness has been a mess, His performances - what few there were in a Boro shirt - have been a mess. His discipline. His team spirit. Everything. End it. Please. Don't let this madness engulf and poison another January.
And what is it with Boro becoming a home for injured waifs and strays? Sure it is nice that we have helped rehabilitate Jeremie Aliadiere and Andrew Davies after injury and earned a few brownie points within the game. But what's in it for us? Who wants a reputation as a soft touch? Aliadiere is fit now and in France looking for a club. Thanks for that. Davies is on wages we can't afford and has an appalling injury record over recent years. Is he the replacement for David Wheater? No. So let's move on.
We are in deep trouble. We have no time for distractions. If Mido is clubless and stateless, tough. It is his own fault. He should have put in a shift when he was here and maybe then he would have earned the right to call in a favour. We owe him nothing. We should not indulge him. Mr Messy Goes On Gardening Leave.

Large, under used, refusing to work and returning to Teesside? IâÂÂm afraid that this is not the Cala Portofino. She is now back at work and is only a medium sized container ship at best. She will soon be docking in Dakar, Senegal.
Alas, those were happy days staring across the dock cut to the ole girl before jumping into the ground for some high octane premiership football - or limp defeat.
Have we become some sort of retirement home for ex (boro) Footballers? Or has Gibbo turned all Frankenstein on us and has hatched a cunning plan. What do we all want in the ideal Boro footballer?
Well as the song goes he has to be one of our own, and also be able to give 110%. Andrew Davies passport and heart will be removed. The rest, auctioned off on EBay. We love players with pace. Jeremie AliadiereâÂÂs Legs will be reused in this monstrosity. Say what you will about Mido... go onâÂÅ . donâÂÂt use the words fat, Greggs or disgraceâŠâŠâŠâŠâÂÅ .I bet you had to use supremely talented, great in the air and when fit great physique. Psychic arenâÂÂt I!!
Put all these ingredients into one melting pot and we have got a great player. Tall, heart of a lion, quick, local lad, prodigious goal to game ratio. I think Gibbo could be onto something. Just one thing, what would his name be?
AV - Talking about 'tied on a year long loan - so, nowhere to go' as we were above about the Pie Pharaoh, where does that leave the stories I keep seeing about Kilgallon going on loan to Donny for the rest of the season (or, indeed, a couple of other possible locations)?
I thought he was on a season long loan to Boro and just back at The Nackems because he wasn't fit and the two clubs couldn't agree on how to get him fit.
**AV writes: He is on a season long loan deal with Boro but is currently back at Sunderland. His fitness is disputed. Boro say he needs an operation to solve his back problem, Sunderland say not. We are not paying his wages. Whether the dispute has led to the loan being cancelled - thus making him available again - I don't know. I will ask.
Mido in Boro Buy Out Shock.
Agents of the Egyptian multi millionaire Munch Monster are locked in negotiations with Boro Chairman Steve Gibson's legal representatives in order to thrash out a mega buck deal to purchase all food outlets at the Riverside.
Rumours have been rife on Teesside after the doughboy of football returned to Rockcliffe on an alleged fat busting mission after Ajax saw through his attempted impersonation of a footballer.
An Ajax spokesman revealed "All he came for was the cake, he ate the cake all day for sure, now the people of Amsterdam have no cake...just pancake...a smoke and a pancake"
It is widely speculated on Teesside that the Fat Pharoah is trying to persuade Gibson, 52, to relinquish control of the food franchise at the Riverside after a disastrous downturn in sales.
"Mido feels that he has a lot to offer the football club and the Teesside faithful" said a source. He wants to prove his worth and give something back to the fans who have stood loyally by him since his move from Tottenham God knows how long ago"
Kebab Rotisseries
"He has big ideas for the food outlets" said another close source. "He wants to bring back the glory years at the burger counter and is planning a massive clear out which could see funds available to install kebab rotisseries and pizza ovens"
A spokesman for Middlesbrough Football Club was unavailable for comment Last night, but an employee who does not wish to be named confirmed that Mido had told her he was hungry.
**AV writes: Top tabloiding.
MIDO - Mad Individual Desperately Overweight.
It could only happen at the Boro!
he could go to mcdonalds...they are always looking for spuds
Is Alves coming back for run about soon? how about Branco?
There is currently debate amongst the football world whether David Beckham would be good for Spurs or would he just be a distraction?
We can all see the positives to Beckham, good role model, excellent trainer - first there and last to leave, experience of winning cups and titles.
However Mido must be, and is only a pure distraction to Boro. What is he teaching Franks, Bennett and the rest of the youngsters? Answers on a postcard to MFC.
Apparently there were officials from KFC Mugospor and Klub Daaft at Hurworth yesterday.
Maybe Gibbo should call Plymouth Argyle. Ginsters might be willing to take on half his wages safe in the knowledge they will get their money back easily.
Hang on, let me get this right, he was on loan to Ajax and if they decide to terminate the loan, we have to pick his contract up again for the remainder of the season?
**AV writes: They haven't decided to terminate the loan. He opted not to return to training after the Christmas break. He has walked out. He is still technically our player but registered with them. We are probably contracted to pay at least a proportion of his wages, whether Ajax have stopped paying him their slice after his exit I don't know. As I said, it is just messy.
I reckon the players are as messy in training as on the field at the moment...
...a coaching problem perhaps?
Sorry AV something is not right here. According to your newspaper:
1]We have no intention of signing him
2]He is somebody the club dont want anywhere near the place.
3]Ajax hold his registration so we have no obligation towards him.
One of the above statements MUST be incorrect if you think logically otherwise he would not be here.
**AV writes: He remains a Boro player and was at Ajax on loan. They have his registration. Boro don't want him at all - but if they want Ajax to be able to shift him then it is in their interest to at least keep him fit. Come January 30 what chance is there of foisting him on an unsuspecting third party if he is two clem overweight?
Can we not just give him a go in the side for a little bit?
We're paying his wages so we may as well try to get something out of him. How bad can he possibly be?
Hold on dudes, coming thru on the teleprinter, TLF has brushed the dust of his boots and is coming back to Boro and score the goals which keep us in the Championship. That's about as wacky as the 'fat lazy boy' coming back to Boro.
What on earth has happened to this club.........
Boro Doug -
That is what clubs in Brazil do. I believe Ronaldinho's wages will be paid in part by a sponsor. The club will have to check out the sundry food producers to get someone to take him.
Ginsters at Plymouth is a start.
Park Farms for Forest and County.
Heinz at Wigan but he blew that one, thats the danger of beans.
Greggs are a Geordie firm so there is an opportunity. Anyone got Ashley's number?
Forfar is famous for Bridies and nearby Arbroath is even more famous for its Smokies but they are short on carbs.
S&A Foods in Derby produce a lot of the asian food we see in supermarkets.
If he went to Leeds he could live to the north and be sponsored by Bettys.
If he went to Norwich he could get crabs, from Cromer you understand.
The list is endless.
Final thought, is there a link between a bulk carrier and Mido re appearing?
**AV writes: They haven't decided to terminate the loan. He opted not to return to training after the Christmas break. He has walked out. He is still technically our player but registered with them. We are probably contracted to pay at least a proportion of his wages, whether Ajax have stopped paying him their slice after his exit I don't know. As I said, it is just messy. "
Ok, but in that case it is highly likely that they will terminate the loan since he is refusing to play for them. Assuming they can. The fact that we have accepted him back implies that they can and we end up paying for him again, otherwise why would we bother? We must have an obligation towards him.
**AV writes: We have an obligation in that he is still contracted to Boro until the end of the season. We had offset that with the deal to Ajax but what the fine detail of that deal is, the breakdown of wages etc I don't know. Ajax will now doubt be trying now to release themselves of their financial obligations but how easy that will be, I don't know. Every deal is different.
For instance, sometimes loans are automatically ended if the player is injured. They go back to their parent club for treatment and the host club are not required to pay wages (as in Kilgallon with Boro.) My understanding is that the Mido/Ajax deal explicitly prohibited that. It was a "no give backsies" deal.
I think he is here just as an expediency to make sure he is fit enough to sell and that Ajax will shortly hand him his registration so he can join another club. The problem could be him finding one - and then ensuring they are prepared to take up the same share of wages burden that Ajax did. It's a mess.
Smog on the Tyne...Could it be Andrew Midoaliere? Maybe Jeramido Davies? Davie Alimido? I could go on all day. You know that from the blog.
I do think, however, if you put them all in a melting pot and pulled out Steed Malbranque, I would be more than happy.
Is Gibson really turning Rockcliffe in to a rehab center? I'm surprised we have not seen Gazza there. Now there is an ex player that really does need help.
There was a car at Hurworth with the number plate ME551
Has the mighty Messi signed for the Boro or has Mogga's comments gone to Frank's head?
C'Mon Boro!
Ian Gill:
By the sponsorship idea he should stay at Boro. He can play at Boro, eat at Boro, stay at Boro, Ramsdens can just sell all his bling to pay for it!!
AV - Mess is right!
Aside from the damage to morale of the squad, particularly the young 'uns (and to any gym equipment he can actually fit his backside on), let alone to the relationship with The Parmo Army, do the club also not understand the further damage - via specualtion - that they are fostering by offering 'No comment', which - as ever - speaks very loudly?
They can't seriously have been hoping that they could keep something the size of a blimp under wraps, could they?
Even if they thought they could 'manage the news', a quick look at Greggs rocketing share price would have alerted the analysts!
I think your other, wider question about why - especially now - we are becoming a sort of Northern footy version of Battersea Dogs Home is pertinent too and should be asked.
The Mido thing is a distraction and no more than that. I can't see it affecting the club.
There again, lambie could see it as just like a new player, a sort of marquee signing though in this case more of a big tent than a sign of intent.
The main concern will be any impact upon finances. It would be a shame if wheats had to leave and the Sphinx mopped up the money generated.
Franks looked so much like Messi in training that clueless Tony opted to play Hoyte at right wing against Burton. A position where he has never played well in his life!
Nice one Mogga.
Mido is a terrible reminder from our mis-shapen recent past. Signings such as Mido are exactly why we are in the mess we are now. Messy indeed AV.
I cannot believe there will be any other club stupid enough to sign him... but don't hold your breath. We may be mugs in the transfer minefield but there are always others! Can anyone name a worse signing than Mido from a Premiership club in recent times other than a catalogue of similar Boro embarrassments? What was the name of that Southampton geezer Souness signed??
BTW .. .the usability of the Gazette website gets worse each week. Whoever has control of it is performing worse than the club at the minute...
**AV writes: There is a major on-going server upgrade underway. There is a good chance the blog could be down this weekend while they spray on the go-faster stripes and fit a big boom box in the boot. I'm told when they have finished the entire network will be well wicked.
So having been rejected by every half-decent side in the whole of Europe, Mido was given one last chance by his old pals at Ajax. And then blew it. Completely.
What a sorry individual. Surely no football club with the means to meet his wage demands will go anyway near him. His wholly unfulfilled career could be over purely because of his ego. Incredible.
What I'd give for 20% of his wasted talent.
I really hate gloating....I honestly do.
But before we even got relegated from the Premier League I did say categorically that Middlesbrough FC were starting to descend into quite possibly THE biggest joke club in the whole history of the English Football league.
So therefore it gives me absolutely no pleasure whatsoever to be proved so spectacularly right what with the way things have unravelled over the last three years.... with this latest episode just the latest of countless sad sorry instalments to add ammunition that backs up my original proclamation.
Forget Corrie, EastEnders or Emmerdale...... THE best soap opera in the land (for all the wrong reasons) has been taking place in Teesside for the last few years!
You have to be so proud!
**AV writes: It is true that there is never a dull moment with Boro... but don't the fans of every team bar two or three at any given moment think their club is a joke?
If Mido doesn't turn up SOMEWHERE, reporting for training/ duty, he presumably would be in breach of whatever contract his deemed to be currently valid.
It may be that Boro hold his contract papers and that he got sub-contracted to others when he was farmed out. That he's walked out at Ajax, possibly makes him in breech of the sub-contract in place with them, but that sub-contract is likely to be between Boro and Ajax - not between Mido and AJax.
The contract Mido has is probably with Boro. That's possibly why he's back here, I think. If he failed to appear here, he'd be in breech of his contract with Boro and we could presumably terminate the contract on that basis.
But he's too worldly for that and is clearly determined to get the last ounce of payment out of whatever his contract is from whomever is ultimately responsible for paying him. And that is probably Boro, if my analysis is something close to correct, even if the legalese isn't quite right.
**AV writes: I think that is broadly right - but also Boro need to ensure he is at least notionally fit if they have any-hope of 'sub-contracting' him out to another club for the last six months.
Boro Doug
Maybe Mido is under the same misapprehension as Boyd and thinks the sponsor is Harry Ramsden.
I agree with BoroPhil that something is not quite right and the logic of Boro's position just does not add up.
If Mido was contracted to Ajax until June with no get out clause then Boro would have nothing [more] to lose if Mido walked away - also Ajax wouldn't be able to cancel his contract and pass him back to Boro.
So why is he back at Boro? It can only be because we're still liable for a proportion of his wages (maybe at least 50%?). So is he back with us because he needs to be in order to receive the Boro part of his wages now that he has left Ajax?
Ajax have only commented that they wanted to get him fit to play - Mido has said he no longer has a future playing for Ajax - Surely one of them must be in breach of contract if he then leaves the dutch club - unless there was a fitness clause in the deal.
Another option is that if Ajax were to no longer hold his registration then he surely would be eligible to play for another club - Have Boro decided that if they are liable to pay a large proportion of his wages then he may as well earn them on the pitch? Sounds desperate but not a completely impossible scenario.
BTW: I posted a question earlier on the previous blog (which your system had acknowledged as submitted) but it never materialised - I'm not sure if the definition of upgrade needs redefining as trying to post here for the last couple of weeks has become more about testing my patience before giving up - beware IT guys often use the phrase 'upgrade problems' to mean they haven't had time to work out how to configured things properly yet.
**AV writes: Yes, I think Boro are paying a portion of Mido's wages and they still own his contract but do not hold his registration which has been retained as yet by Ajax. You can only be registered with two teams in any one year. Ajax are one, Boro are hoping another club can be persuaded to become the second. That will mean another round of messy three way haggling to deliver.
As to the upgrade, it is on-going. You have to remember that this blog is well down the food chain rather than the priority client. Trinity's alpha geeks start from the top with the Mirror and the national network then work their way down with the fine-tuning and de-bugging. We are getting there.
Yeah, I agree that has to be the only answer, for argument's sake let's say us and Ajax were paying 50% each of his wages, now he has lost the Ajax half, but we maybe have a chance to get rid of our half to someone else now we have his registration back.
So, if that is the case, this turn of events has actually been a plus for us, as we might have the chance to get rid of his portion of the wages which we thought we were destined to end up paying.
AV - you reckon the site will be wicked when you get all the changes to the software in place. Well let me tell you I think it is wicked at the moment, after twice spending and hour compiling a comment only to have it completely deleted due to some software problem.
Could Mido be any worse in the goal scoring department than the present bunch? Note Scott McDonald played his 22nd game for Australia in the Asian Cup recently and has still failed to score even one goal.
Mido is a born goal scorer, and I am sure he would be a great improvement on the present strikers in the club, even if he is not 100% fit. Maybe play him for 45 minutes and let him blow himself out, you never know he may just hit the jackpot.
Fraser and his pals at the NE football desk were teasing this yesterday - it's going to be something to make Boro fans spit out their cornflakes they merrily suggested. It was more like get a little sick in their mouths.
Go terrorise the north west of Spain...again!
And now for something completely different.
Looking at what is happening with Wheater. He may play on saturday and we are told the situation will be resolved by 31st Jan.
There is very little sign of other movement though we had some talk of Boyd back to Rangers - I am going to upset some people and say my brother, son and myself thought he put a decent shift in on Saturday. Only problem is his goal was chalked off and came close a few times.
But on with the story. My instincts tell me that we will see very little activity in this window. Wheater may be a late mover and that would leave us little time to act.
Of course we do not know what is happening in the background but there are normally some hints, there may well be a flurry but the Smithy still seems mothballed.
The reality is that the next four matches will go a long way to deciding if it is all out battle for the rest of the season or if we can give ourselves some breathing space. That means what we have at the moment have to do the business.
**AV writes: The Smithy has been closed down, boarded up and is covered in cobwebs. That rustic artisanship is soooo last year. All the action now is down at the Hurworth church hall bring and buy.
I fear this January is going to be used as another stick to beat the club with.
I'd be interested to hear what other bloggers and AV think, but I don't think that most Boro fans are aware/accepting of the club's current financial situation.
I keep hearing and reading other Boro fans opinions about how we should be going for Yakubu, Geremi, Chris Eagles etc etc and it seems inevitable that when those signings don't happen (for obvious reasons) there'll be further tantrums about lacking ambition and all that nonsense.
I don't suppose that Riverside gates can fall much lower and presumably these ill-informed fans have already abandoned ship, but perhaps someone at the club should come out and deliver a clear statement about the exact nature of our finances. I don't think it would be news to anyone within the game and wouldn't hurt us. They could clear up the Mido situation while they're at it.
Probably as likely as signing Yakubu.
Andy R said -
I agree 100 %. Think if you were half as talented as him. Too much money too soon? What a waste of talent!
Now to another former Boro striker. According to Daily Star Stoke striker Tuncay has put a video compilation of his goals on his Facebook page in an effort to try and find a new club.
Is his dispute with Boro solved? Anyway he could come and train with us - we don't worry if there are issues with a player here.
Up the Boro!
sick as a parrot said:
"There was a car at Hurworth with the number plate ME551"
I think you didn't see it correctly. I must have been ME55 and it was big Mido! Up the Boro!
This Mido story takes yet more twists and turns. Now the Gazette are reporting an "Olive Branch" from Mogga to Mido. I only hope Mogga stripped said branch of olives first, or who knows what might have happened...
Anyway, if that is true, that we are considering having him back to play, then that would mean he will be unable to play for any other club until the end of the current season. He would only be eligible to play with either ourselves or Ajax.
And if, as AV reports, the loan deal was a no-returnsies deal, then presumably that locks Ajax in to paying whatever proportion of Mido's wages they agreed to. In which case, they are highly unlikely to release his registration to us, to allow him to play, without wanting to tear up the loan deal.
I can't see Ajax continuing to pay a percentage of Mido's wages whilst not being able to have him playing for them. So, it seems a non-starter? If we want his registration we will probably have to cancel the agreement and foot the entire bill of his wages. Which, as we know from above, we will have to do until the end of the season, because he won't be allowed to be registered elsewhere.
I guess what I'm asking is - are the Gazette being mischevious here?
AV - is Mido definitely still under contract to us? I can't see how we can get him back to play for us unless we pay his entire Premierleague wages again, which seems foolish in this time of austerity, and would probably eat up all of any saving on Wheater's wages - and then some.
Yours,
Confused of Smogtown.
**AV writes: Yes of course if Ajax cancel the loan deal - which looks imminent - then they will stop paying their slice of his wages. Then it will get messy if Mido comes looking for the short-fall from his primary employers ie Boro.
That is why Boro's first option would be to shift Mido on to another club quickly, rather than be landed with the full whack. And that's why they need to ensure he is fit, primarily to entice other clubs into taking him on loan. I think Mogga hinting the door may be open to a shopwindow game at Boro may just be good psychology aimed at motivating Mido to train hard.
Questions to all those who think it wise to come clean regarding club finances:-
Would you consider changing your job to a company who you knew was in a financial mess and may not be able to pay your wage?
Would you consider sponsoring in any way a company that could use your money purely to pay its debts and may not exist long enough to see any value for your investment?
Would you, as a company owed money by a company in dire straights, be straight on to them to get your money before you're lucky to get 10p in the pound?
Would you tell your employees exactly why there was no paper for the photocopier or the coffee machine was taken away?
I'm not saying it's as bad as that but coming clean and taking a moral stance is fraught with danger and the fall out would be much greater than appeasing the few.
AV -
The response to Smoggy doesnt seem to match the story in the Gazette. Uncle Eric wouldnt print anything without susbstance (unless he was using it at the time) so it makes the picture even murkier.
We are told Mido is pleased to return to family life as they still live near Darlington and has renewed friendships at the Boro. Must be the sundry catering concessions.
Aliadiere is/isnt still with us may/may not be in discussions. Davies is playing for the reserves.
I notice Jim Platt holding an autographed Boro shirt, is he back in training as well?
I am afraid it is certainly getting messy, it is like one of those spoof adventures where oldies get back together to save the planet. BoroWorld will be in safe hands, at least if they are caught Mido can eat the plans.
I am sorry but it just looks out of control.
**AV writes: The difference is that Eric puts questions to the club - the chief exec, the manager etc - and then reports their response, something that some people get uptight about because the club line doesn't always fit in with their perspective. But that is part of what a newspaper does. I prod it a bit, hold it up to the light and take it all apart to see how it works and how it fits in with other things and filter it through different perspectives. That's part of what a paper does too. That's why news and opinion don't always marry up. It's a good thing.
InGabon -
Point taken regarding discussing finances.
However, is there anyone in the game, from other football clubs to sponsors, who doesn't know we're in financial trouble? The books are there for all to see are they not?
The only people who don't seem to realise are the people who could be buying the product, but aren't. And one of the reasons they are not buying into the club is because they think the club is without hope or ambition.
You have to question how Ajax can rip up a loan agreement and send Mido and his wages back to us, when we weren't in a position to recall him?
**AV writes: Ajax haven't done that. Mido unilaterally decided not to return after the Xmas break because Martin Jol had left. Officially the Ajax boss Frank de Boer is saying he believes he can still be a big player for them. They will be making sure they do it by the book but it is hard to see a way back.
This Mido thing is getting a bit tiresome now. Whatever is going on it will be legally binding. We wonâÂÂt start paying him ã50,000.00 a week because we feel like it.
However this is a man who refused to return to pre-season training, did he refuse to play and demand a loan move away? If so he should be told not to return to the club, but alas he probably has a legal right to return and we canâÂÂt afford any expensive law suits.
Also can you not play for more than two clubs in a season? I donâÂÂt think you can be owned by more than two clubs, but can you not be loaned to more than one club? Andrew Taylor played for us earlier this season. He has played on loan to Watford. Are we saying he cannot go out on loan to another club? I think he can. Therefore I think Mido can play for us and still get a loan move to Real Madrid or wherever he thinks he should be.
AV how happy do you think Mowbray is right now. Is the job what was advertised on the tin? Is he growing frustrated with individual players? Is the task at hand bigger than he thought?
**AV writes: I think he knows exactly the scale of the reconstruction needed. He has known that from day one. Sometimes fans think that because the manager and chairman don't slaughter the team in public that they are deluded as to the nature of their collective incompetance.
AV -
Fair enough, I think there are many more media streams than when I started supporting. They all need information that it seems that even the club feels the need to fill the air waves when there is nothing to say. If they dont say anything they are accused of hiding, damned if they do, damned if they dont.
But however we dress up the current situation it seems messy.
Roll on Saturday, I hope.
Andy R -
I think most teams are in the merde at the moment. If Roman Abramovic pulled the plug, Chelski would be up to their eyes in it but they have been successful, so everyone is happy. That's somewhat like Boro in the heady days of cup finals when the finances obviously didn't add up but did we care, or even give it a second thought?
As AV says, Bulkhaul is keeping the club afloat but why should Gibbo want to disclose that arm to those who would never bother to go to Companies House and find out? I take your point however that for some people it's the not knowing that gnaws at the heartstrings but on the other hand, the knowing might dishearten a lot more folk.
**AV writes: Ajax haven't done that. Mido unilaterally decided not to return after the Xmas break because Martin Jol had left.
Yep, I realise they haven't done that, but as you said:
"Ajax will now doubt be trying now to release themselves of their financial obligations but how easy that will be, I don't know"
"Yes of course if Ajax cancel the loan deal - which looks imminent - then they will stop paying their slice of his wages."
If it is indeed possible that they can unilaterally cancel the arrangement (and we couldn't), that wasn't a particularly good arrangement on our part. Though it was highly possible that we signed anything that got him out of the door.
**AV writes: It was a tortuous process agreeing the deal and you can see Ajax asking for all kind of guarantees. I would. They had Boro over a barrel. Who knows what complexities are tucked away in in there that now need unravelling.
What happens next depends on the nature of the arrangement Mido had with Ajax, any penalty clauses there may be and whether Ajax want to be vindictive or not. They could with-hold his registration until after the deadline for instance. There's a lot of mileage in this crazy soap opera yet. Boro are insisting today they are not paying him... I remain sceptical about this. Or maybe they aren't right now... until Ajax make their move maybe. It is a mess.
Looking on the bright side - I think with Mido and McMido playing up front Boro can start to steamroll the opposition defences - literally!
InGabon -
I think the only reasons the club's finances have not been clarified publicly are more to do with ego than anything else. Gibson's ego would never allow him to admit that the club has returned to the brink of whence it came.
What's doubly frustrating is that the brass also seem unable to settle on a strategy going forward.
When Southgate was appointed there was a downsizing project to be undertaken, but then they threw panic money at Mido and Alves. More downsizing under Strachan, but then they reinvested the ã10m raised in player sales.
That spending, mixed with the various PR statements that come from the club (best financed club in the Championship etc - apologies if I've misquoted) send out the message that all is well with club finances and add to the anger and disillusionment of supporters when the club continues to fail on the field and no marquee signings are made.
The club would do better to clear the air and give would-be supporters something to rally behind in my opinion. Perhaps the opportunity to do that was when Mowbray was appointed and it's too late now, but I predict another avoidable backlash against the club when this transfer window closes, apathy notwithstanding.
Feb 1.....
Team Announced for next game
Steele,
McMahon, Davies, Bates, Taylor
Oneil, Greening, Arca
Alliadiere, Mido, Mcdonald
Forget the sarcastic quips, would that team have more chance of scoring goals than the present one
**AV writes: You think we can afford to get anywhere near Greening's wages?
There are times when I'm merely pleased that Mowbray is manager. At other times I'm delighted. At the moment it's delight after reading this comment from today's press conference:
"I have formed my own opinion over my conversation with him and the couple of days training I have had with him, and as we go on, I don't see a problem, really.
"If there is a problem, it's an easy one for me to solve. It's not as if there is any large amount of money changing hands or any contracts or anything like that.
"If in any way, shape or form Mido disrespects the environment, then he won't be coming in. But at the moment, he is working very hard and enjoying his time."
Well said Tony.
Mogga trying 'psychology' with the Pie Pharaoh? If he is, then he'll soon learn - as he says he likes to and everyone before him has - from his own experience that 'psychology' of any sort doesn't work with some people.
Much less with those with enough independent means to allow their self-centredness to reign with absolute impunity.
Still, the sick joke (at our expense, as usual) shambles that is the Mido pantomime at least serves as a distraction from the other shambles.
There's the usual very slow motion transfer window shambles going on with the usual key issues in midfield not being addressed - again. And do we really think that those other loan returns, re-treads and cast offs now being 're-assessed' are going to do the job that's needed in attack or defence?
Mind you, if we have to pick up Mido's wages again, let alone Davies, The Count's probably already told Mogga that that's it.
And then there's the preparation for the game at the weekend when the manager seems to be concentrating more on the various prodigal sons who can't play at Bristol and no-one seems sure who is fit, 'available' or otherwise.
And it's not as though the next run of four games is of any importance, is it.....
League One here we come. The sad thing is that, week by week, it's getting harder and harder to be at all bothered.
AV -
I understand Mogga is interested in Greening. My reasoning on having him in,is based on some players leaving, even on loan. I for one have more confident in that team I speculated on ,than the one we have now in this division.
**AV writes: He will be on well over ã30k. He's going to have to take one hell of a pay-cut to come into the new financial orbit we are working within.

Another measure. How sad is that. It just keeps coming!
On Andy R's discussion with In Gabon:
The time to be open and honest with the supporters was when the strategy was changed, at the start of Southgate's management. The atmosphere would have been entirely different, Gibson could have preserved his reputation as "One of Us" and I think he'd have hung onto the loyalty of a lot more of those departing and preserved the "Fortress Teesside" mentality.
Instead,he divided local opionion instead of uniting it behind a common purpose. He's shown his true colours. He was never really "One of Us" - it was a "title" afforded him by a grateful group of club supporters who believed they shared a common bond. However, in my opinion, that bond was broken. By choosing to be separate - someone apart - by not including supporters - that largest numerical section of stakeholders in Boro - in the the issues facing the club, I consider that he lost the entitlement to such an accolade.
He DID NOT have to be explicit about sums involved. He just needed to explain to supporter group leaders that we were having to cut our cloth for a while and put fan communications machinery in place to keep us better informed, instead of leading us to believe that the turning point was just around the corner.
He'd have kept more on board for longer if he'd done that - despite it being dire. Because they would have done it out of loyalty to someone who was actually then demonstrating genuine "One of Us" credentials and cementing his reputation as a local leader.
But instead, he let us all find out the hard way and showed himself up as being even dismissive of club supporters outside of the five mile radius and of Stockton in particular. And then had the audacity to ask for "Blind Faith" from those he had just cut out of the emotional stakeholder equation!
Goodness me!
I, personally, have largely stuck with Boro DESPITE Gibson these past three years. He adds no loyalty value for me any more. Such relationships have to be a two-way thing.
**AV writes: I agree there should have been tranparency about the change in startegy. What may have been more productive was a club led public debate about the financial reality and the reasons for the trajectory. Instead it leaked out in snide remarks ("Teesside will get the club it can afford") and fans doing their own calculations as squad size, average spend and wage levels were slashed.
Repositioning Boro as a club consciously carving out a new sustainable model, a team that did not buy big ticket stars but spotted and nurtured raw talent, got the best from it and sold on players for a profit could have been sold as a positive that united supporters around a noble enterprise. (Incidentally when I argued that Boro should become a 'supercharged top flight Crewe' the club took exception and complained that I was talking down their spending power and ambitions)
It would also have left Boro in a position to control the down-sizing with public support instead of appearing to lurch from crisis to crisis.
As the weeks roll by it gets more & more depressing being a boro fan. The way gibson keeps quiet while we slide into oblivion is frustrating as well. Its all looking hopeless to me.
Greening!! Greening??
Do me a favour, we already have enough useless footballers. If he is the best target we can come up with then we may as well start buying the League 1 pies now.
I've put a ã5 on Mido to score the winner on the last day of the season to keep us up, repaying both the club and my mortgage.
All joking aside I cannot and never will slag off Steve Gibson. The club owe everything to him. That he must carry the can for all the wrong football decisions is ridiculous. Without his business acumen and foresight we could well be languishing in a league much further down having suffered points deductions and whatever else goes with administration.
Who really wants foreign ownership and Sven Goran Ericcson as manager? There is no magic wand to suddenly propel us up the league table, everything will take time. I for one am prepared to wait and see if Mowbray and Gibson can pull it off.
Unfortunately this will be impossible with the curent squad of players who have shown they are not good enough. The transition from overpaid underachievers to succesful realistically paid genuine triers will take at least two seasons.
If [probably when] we go down it will be a chance to start afresh. At least then Mowbray will be on a level playing field.
AV: You said - "It would also have left Boro in a position to control the down-sizing with public support instead of appearing to lurch from crisis to crisis."
That is precisely the point, neatly summed up.
And to add a little bit to it, If John Powls's oft vaunted suggestion of fan inclusion had been taken on board also, it would have reinforced the relationship and given many retractors less ammunition.
But as JP and others have more than hinted on several occasions over the years, it's not a management style that comes easy to the Boro Executive. In fact it seems to be entirely alien! And this is in no small part a disappointment to those who had hitherto considered the Boro Executive as smart cookies. It seems Gibson's millions were covering up some holes in the carpet.
I wonder if the Mowbray years - however long they may prove to be - might be remembered in part for a detante and the introduction of closer communications ties with supporters. The man comes across as having the style and credentials. He just needs the headroom and support from Gibson and I think he could be the guy to do it. Because the present PR and marketing bunch, whoever they are, either haven't been accorded the freedom and responsibility to get on with it, or they're just not professional enough! Just a hunch!
But Mowbray's got other priorities at the present time. And having little faith in Gibson's executive style or ability to effect beneficial change - even by big money throws - any more, I won't hold my breath.
Mido will play again. I know because as I wandered past Rockcliff I could hear the unmistakeable sound of a barrel being scraped and the collective groan as Mogga pulled out his fist clutching a straw.
Richard and AV -
MFC managed a unique double in that their marketing and communication of the financial reconstruction was matched only by the actual reconstruction of the playing side.
Both sides of the club show a consistency in management style, a united front rarely seen in football. The downisizing of the club has matched the downsizing of support and income.
Maybe Walliams and Lucas can do a spoof on MFC on the lines of Come Fly with Me.
Richard -
Yes, you're right. The time to have been open about the change in strategy was at the beginning, when that strategy was first put in place. I think there was another opportunity for honesty when Mowbray was appointed, but clearly that openness is something that doesn't interest Gibson and Lamb, probably for the reasons InGabon pointed out.
Gibson would also do well to stick to his strategy. If downsizing is the order of the day then downsizing it must be, not downsizing until your ambition is questioned then throwing panic money at average players.
I'm in the GHW camp here regarding Steve Gibson. Everyone knows the power of hindsight. He appointed a manager and backed him with the largest pot in the Championship. How can anyone complain at that?
OK, it didn't work (spectacularly as it turned out) but many a manager in every division would covet that backing both monetarily and professionally. It could have gone so right, but unfortunately it was shown that Steve's trust in the rebuilding was misplaced, the last big throw of the dice failed. But at least he was willing to try.
Now he's appointed the peoples choice, what more can we ask? In Mogga We Trust.
Aliadiere on the cheap is a no-brainer. Fast, hungry and with a quality somewhere between chship and pl. He even stays fit for one or two games a month.
Mido on the cheap isnt bad either, but of course, it might just explode and damage the dressing room.
Mowbray obviously likes a gamble and believe he has the balls to control someone like Mido. I like that, go for it.
Anlov
Mido is a strange character and I believe is inedependently wealthy. A couple of Egyptian fans I have spoken to over the years have just shrugged their shoulders.
He has had so many clubs if he was a golfer he would be penalised a couple of shots and he is still only 27.
There is no doubting the talent when fit and focussed but many a manager has been unable to get any form of consistency out of him. I should rephrase that because he is consistent in the wrong sort of way.
Mogga is right to adopt a clean sheet approach but it reflects on how far we have slipped that we are looking at players who to a large extent failed at the Boro.
Ian Gill -
Spot on. Its definately a reflection on our status right now. But then again, now its all about survival, and we should explore every possibly sollution.
The reason I suspect a deal can be beneficial is my belief in Mowbray as a leader. I dont think heÃÅœll give in to any bs, and especially not from an already troubled individual like Mido.
Regarding Aliadiere, Im still convinced that hell be a championship hit. Trouble is hell be injured half of the season, but if hes prepared to sign a cheap deal based on performances and bonuses, its gonna be worth it.
If Boro give Mido a liferaft and help him get fit enough to mug another club that would be it for me. I won't give them another penny.
People like Mido are exactly the reason the club are in the dire finincial mess it is in. Him and his ilk have brought the team I love to the brink of collapse. We have had to get shot of good, honest decent players that could have been the future of the club to pay for the likes of this waste of space.
Five years ago we were in Europe. Now we can't even get journeymen in on loan and we could be back down where Gibbo started in the third division very soon - and it is because star struck suits have let blood suckers like Mido syphon untold millions out of the club without even coming anywhere near breaking sweat.
Mido has been a Boro player for four years. He has played about 25 games and scored five goals. We have spent, what, ã12m? ã13m? ã14m? in fees and wages for him and how has he repaid us?
By going AWOL, reporting back overweight, by swanning back to Cairo every time he gets a niggle (and taking our staff who should be training players who want to be in the team with him), by slagging us off, holding us to ransom last summer and by treating the club, his team-mates and the supporters with utter disrespect.
Now after messing up at Ajax he comes back to a team he hasn't contributed to for well over two years and is quite open about the fact that he plans to use us to get fit so he can get to sign for another club? And we let him? Are we stupid? Has no-one in this club got a spine. He should never have been let through the door. No wonder players walk all over this club. We are a pushover.
When you think how Peter Beagrie, Nicky Barmby, Paul Merson, Christian Ziege get booed. They all did far, far more for this club than Mido and not one of them committed a "crime" that comes anywhere near the contempt this man has showed for Middlesbrough Football Club.
Seriously, if he pulls on a Boro shirt again, I am out. It breaks my heart to see people like this involved with my club and to see the people charged with running the club smarming around the man and being so bloody reasonable and accomodating. No wonder we are in trouble. We have no anger, no fire, no sense of injustice, no pride, no dignity, no self respect.
The Northern Echo states:-
TONY Mowbray has challenged Mido to earn a place in the Middlesbrough first team, and admitted David WheaterâÂÂs proposed move to Bolton Wanderers has effectively collapsed.
It's the last part of the paragraph that's of concern, how come it seems poles apart from the Gazette?
**AV writes: Maybe the Echo are over-egging the pudding saying it has collapsed. Bolton and Wheats couldn't agree a deal after an initial chat last weekend but our understanding is that they remain keen and that more talks are scheduled.
Not in a confident mood about tomorrow. If we canâÂÂt win when playing well, is it not time for some untypical Boro, play badly and squeak a last minute equalizer? Probably not.
Over the last three years we have lost over 60% of our matches. People go on about our poor crowds etc etc. I think those that are still going deserve a ruddy big medal. Factoring in historical data, conditions and form the Smogonthetyne Match predictor é ⢠shows a 2-1 home win. Winning goal scored unsurprisingly late.
Have a good weekend.
Jonathan Greening is in my worst ever Boro X1.
I dont know how many games he played for us but the ones where he managed to achieve even League 1 standard could be counted on 1 hand.
As to his wages - well couldnt we just rename the club Mido's Borough and then he can pay the rest himself.
I agree with Clive Road. Letting Mido within five miles of the club just DESPERATION and also that we have no pride or integrity left.
I don't buy the idea that we "have nothing to lose." I think we have team spirit to lose. What can Mido bring to the party? Discipline? Professionalism? Loyalty? Dedication? He represents everything that is bad about the game and I wouldn't want him anywhere near the young lads who are our future.
"I dont know how many games he played for us but the ones where he managed to achieve even League 1 standard could be counted on 1 hand"
That'll be the Jonathan Greening that got in the England squad when he was with us then?
Saying that, I don't think he would be an ideal signing, he works hard, but I can't see him being particularly creative and we have plenty of midfielders like that. I'd welcome practically any new faces though.
I can never understand when people talk about walking away or not being interested anymore - yes, we are struggling but it's still the Boro, and I must admit IâÂÂm actually enjoying the Mido soap opera and the transfer window uncertainty.
If the figures quoted by Clive Road in his most excellent rant are correct then Mido has already been paid about half-a-million pounds per game by Boro.
So if Mogga is contemplating giving him a new contract then perhaps the most Mido should ask for (if he has any shred of honour left in him) is just ã1 per week - after all he agreed (apparently) to play for ã1,000 per week for West Ham.
It still sounds like the most desperate of deals between a desperate club and a desperate player - it will only serve as a massive distraction and create a hostile mood on the terraces that may ultimately have a negative effect on the team's performance - unless Mido scores with his first touch then I can't see it working on any level.
**AV writes: Mido cost ã6m (plus signing on fee, usually around the 10% mark, so say ã500k). He was on ã40k (ish) or ã2m a year but only got that from us for the first two years. So that is ã10.5m.
Then when he was on loan at Wigan, Zamalek, West Ham and Ajax Boro will have paid a portion [let's call it X] . The value of X is an unknown and will have been different at each club (Boro say they were paying nothing while he was at Ajax but he may have had a pay-off to go there and that won't have come cheap). Even if X is "just" ã10k a week that is still ã500k a year so it is not out of the question he will have cost the club in the region of ã12m.
On the subject of Steve Gibson I feel the need to clarify that I still believe we're lucky to have him.
His decision making sometimes frustrates. His "style" of ownership sometimes grates. The "one-of-us" nonsense is just that. But there is no doubt that he cares as passionately (or more) as anyone and he desperately wants the best the club, even if we can't always (often?) agree how to get there.
I don't think there is anyone else I'd rather have in charge, and I think (please!) he's got it right this time in appointing Tony Mowbray.
Good. I don't feel so dirty for criticising him now.
The talk and blogging is certainly interesting at the moment.
Sadly it is like my late dad's views about works commitee meetings, all about the shape oe the pies in the canteen. In this case Mido ate them all.
The alternative is to talk out the league position and the chance of points against Bristol.
Shall we just leave it there otherwise we will be thinking about another typical Boro performance but points from unexpected sources......
