GATE CLOSES FOR GARETH
BORO won but the crowd finally dipped below the political trigger point of the half-way mark and Gareth Southgate was axed. Over 10,000 fans lost in just seven games. That stark statistic forced the issue. It was always going to be the decisive figure. That and three miserable goalless defeats at home.
A crowd of just 17,459 turned out to see a scrappy laboured 2-0 win over Derby that just wasn't good enough. Good enough to stop the rot but not enough to put the brakes on the unstoppable bandwagon against the boss.
Despite Boro moving to within one point of the top, the axe fell in a midnight meeting in the Riverside boardoom. A hastily issued club statement said simply: "Middlesbrough FC have tonight announced that manager Gareth Southgate has been relieved of his position with immediate effect. Football consultant Alan Smith will also be leaving the club as part of the change."
Steve Gibson added: "This has been the most difficult decision I have had to make in all the time I have been in football. Gareth has given Middlesbrough Football Club magnificent service as a skipper and, in very difficult circumstances, as manager.
"I appointed Gareth in a situation that was greatly unfavourable to him. He is a good man and has all the qualities and integrity that we wanted in a manager.
"However, the time is right for change and that change has had to be made. Gareth will always be welcome at our football club. English football needs people of his stature and we feel certain that this experience will serve him well.
"Gareth deserves another opportunity once he has had the chance to rest and refresh himself."
More from the chairman in today's paper Gazette.

Obviously we set the scene yesterday but here's a sneak preview of my initial political analysis for today's paper ... more on the Southgate legacy (I think he deserves a lot of credit for picking up the poisoned chalice) and the all important succession later.

A SCRAPPY home win over a dismal Derby was never going to be enough.
Enough to put Boro back to within touching distance of the top, yes.
And enough to buy maybe a week of breathing space from the growing mob gathering around the gallows beside the Ayresome Gates, yes.
But it was never going to be enough to heal the yawning rift that had opened between the crowd and the club.
And it was never going to be enough to arrest the alarming slump in crowds that finally last night dipped below the half-way mark.
That is the real problem that sealed his fate: politics and bums on seats, not results.
It seems harsh to axe the boss after a win that puts you within a point of the top.
But there is a bigger picture, and it is a far from pretty one.
There has been a growing estrangement between the powers that be at Boro and the supporters who have grown increasingly hostile to the entire trajectory and philosophy of the club.
A club can never make progress and achieve its ambitions unless it is totally united from top to bottom and Boro were well on the way towards being a squabbling group of warring factions, a divided and dysfunctional entity at odds with itself.
And when the manager becomes the focus of the fighting and disunity there is only one way out, no matter how great or loyal his past service. We have been here before with Lennie Lawrence, Bryan Robson and Steve McClaren. We know how the infighting can quickly become the main event and detract from and undermine the team.
Something had to be done to halt the slide towards that debilitating political paralysis.
As the pressure mounted a lonely Gareth Southgate has been teetering ominously along the edge of that chasm for months.
But whatever people may have thought, the boss was not bulletproof. Southgate's exit was inevitable - he had lost the crowd.
The booing had become the soundtrack to the season. Protests were become more vocal and vitriolic as positions became entrenched and, crucially, for the first time the finger was being pointed higher up the chain of command.
And it wasn't going away. Results were not going to sway the masses back on message.
Most had long ago made up their minds. Many at West Brom away last year when a dismal grave-digging defeat signalled the imminent end of the Premiership dream.
Many more made their mind up when the drop was confirmed, when the new recruits failed to fire the imagination, or when the drab opener this term against Sheffield United showed that a quick return was far from inevitable.
Yet more made up their minds as Boro laboured through three successive home defeats without scoring and without any indication that they had the nouse, drive or belief that they could break down even average teams to win.
Layers of loyalists had gradually, reluctently moved into the opposition camp and were not going to be won back.
Even the most understanding of fans have become openly hostile to the new prudent cost cutting financial strategy and its most visible expression, the departure of match winning quality players with the ability to excite.
Angry at not just the exit of big names but the signal failure of the boss to consistently recruit adequate replacements with what were restricted but still relatively generous resources.
They have grown sceptical and increasingly angry at repeated arrogant foot-in-mouth public statements from the Ivory Tower heirarchy seen to have grown aloof and isolated from - or even dismissive of - the widespread and sincere fears and frustrations felt by the fans.
And they have been dismayed at the sobering realities of watching a bargain basement Championship side so soon after the champagne cavalier dash through Europe and the UEFA Cup final - and by the meek acceptance of the new lowly status.
And crucially they have become totally demoralised: the vast majority had lost any faith in Southgate's ability to put together, organise and motivate a winning team. And they had lost any belief in the prospect of promotion - or that if the team did somehow go up that it could survive.
That disenchantment was most visibly expressed in the contagious red rash of empty seats that had spread across the Riverside.
Boro have haemorrhaged 10,000 supporters from last season's impressive, defiantly loyal average of 28,000. Even a chairman who had shown steadfast commitment was inevitably going to waver once the crowd not only edged towards revolt but also starts to evaporate.
Given the political dynamics below the simmering surface the plunging gates were always going to be decisive. Against Leicester and Watford the gates were just above 18,000. It did not have to fall much further to reach the politically sensitive trigger point of 17494 that would scream unavoidably that the ground was half empty.
Against Derby it was 17459.
We must hope that is now rock bottom and that the slump can be arrested, unity be restored and the club galvanised.
But the political problems remain. If we are to solve them and move forward it is crucial that Steve Gibson gets his next decision right.

Agree with Ian Gill's comment above.
Now it's time for some experience - that will be a new experience for Gibbo and The Count.
Time to look forward with hope and - yes - with expectation too. And to pull together for the only cause we're all loyal to - Boro.
Long overdue and thoroughly deserved.
Please let this be the start of something brilliant.
Curbishley would be my choice, I think.
Not just for his experience but also because of the sort of club he ran at Charlton - close to Boro in it's economics, atmosphere and community ethos.
Surprised it happened in these circumstances. Suprised it came after a win. Surprised it took so long. And surprised that I felt a swell of pride and affection for Gareth Soutgate on reading the clubs statement after the bitterness and resentment almost, that was building with each progressively worse performance of recent times.
He's been a bad manager and has genuinely strugled, and for that I wanted to see the back of him and felt alot of anger toward him. However, for all his acheievement with this club, the loyalty and love he's shown - I salute him.
I don't feel now is the time to celebrate - I'm now more inclined to talk like the rose tinted spec brigade, now is the time for optimism, and for talk of the future. Gareth was a great servant to the club as a player despite failings as a manager, I wish him well and thank him for his efforts - I do wish it could have worked out better but it didn't, and now we move on.
UP THE BORO
Respect for Gareth the player. Given the job too early, and too much stubborn loyalty from Gibson in not admitting the appointment was a mistake. It took fan power to force his hand.
It might seem strange to do this when we are fourth from the top of the Championship, but in reality, we are four points BELOW the bottom of the Premiership, where we should be playing this season.
Relegation was foreseen by the fans before xmas last season, yet management blinded themselves to it, and continued with the same negative tactics, and the same underfiring forwards.
Why wasn't I reading this 365 days ago?? We would still be in the Premier league, the crowds would be 30,000+, Downing and the Turk would still be here, we would have a decent settled manager on board and his changes would be taking effect right about now!
Enough of the slow learner mentality Steven!
Gibbo break your trend of rookie love and gives us a tougher manager with some clout and charisma, a hardcase, a motivator!
Regardless, nice bloke the Gate but a very crap manager....get the new gadgee on board within the fortnight and he could be taking over a team at the top of the Chumpionship!!!
Just feel that wind roar through the hair as that Riverside Roller-coaster hits the nadir and piles upwards to the zenith!!!!
Sad news but at least the moaners can't criticise Steve Gibson for not acting...........
I hear Gary Johnson or Darren Ferguson may be in the frame...............Is Venners available?
I hope you have got your internet techies on standby duty, AV. There might be 35,000 posts on this alone - the surprise sacking after a rare home WIN, and frenzied posts insisting SG has been seen in a service station on the M1 huddled together with XXX or with YYY.
You just have to wonder whether, fearing there was nothing to suggest we could pull out of the home game tail-spin and were facing a fourth consecutive defeat (though in reality Derby were truly awful last night), SG hadn't already been making plans for a new appointment. In which case we might be hearing something sooner reather than later.
Nigel Pearson, Curbs, Strachan, Souness, Hitzfeld and even Keegan will be getting a name call in the sporting press. But the most important thing is that, whoever is appointed, it HAS to be someone with experience.
We have to go up this year and, in a league with very little quality, it would be criminal to waste the "Get out of Jail" card handed to us this season.
So where are we?
Fourth off top, with a better than average though underperforming squad. A stronger financial position than most of the division, a great stadium. A hard core fan-base of put your own figure here. In this division anything from 12000 to 25000 depending on where we are and how we are playing.
So we are very much an attractive proposition for any ex player who fancies his chances. John Barnes anyone? No, me neither. Tony Adams? Ho Ho.
We are very much an attractive proposition for any experienced, semi-successful manager with the ability to motivate a team, operate to a budget and temper the warring factions of support. A tendency not to blame the referees in defeat would be a bonus. (or the fans, the internet, local media etc)
Gorgon Starch-one would seem an obvious choice. But I'm open to suggestions.
I am suprised by the timing and maybe Gibson's mind was made up after the Watford game. The crowd being down 10,000 in seven games is probably the key factor in it all.
I was never a fan of Southgate as a manager but I do hope the chairman has a plan and manager in mind. Some of the names mentioned so far I dare not repeat.
I wish Southgate well for the future, he did have a difficult job to do but I think a more experienced manager would have coped better. I hope that he manages to get another post - if he wants to that is. For me he will be remembered at Boro as a player and captain, not as manager.
Any news if Lamb was sacked too?
Thought for today in a text from John Powls.
Johnson, left wing, two goals. Simples.
Managers? Strachan, Souness, Curbs, Mogga, Jewell, Pearson. Someone even said Keegan!!!!!
I'm actually stunned!
This has to be the worst sacking in the history of worst sackings.
I have called and campaigned for GS and his team to be given the bullet since day one, and to be fair, I have done so to the point of irritation where it was all I talked about and so of late I thought I'd give people a rest.
But why now?
One point off the top with a young team and no money.
Forget that he got us relegated for one moment, but would another manager in the same circumstances as now have done any better?
Steve Gibson has lost the plot and this absurdely timed sacking under the guise of, " It's time for a change " is an absolute joke. It was time for a change before we got relegated mate and you never bloody took it, did you?
This sacking shows that Steve Gibson has shown himself incapable of running this football club and that he too should get the bullet. What an absolute sham.
I'm glad Southgate has gone, but to do it now after all the endless backings from everyone on a repeated basis, and with Southgate doing a very good job at the moment, this sacking at this time is absurd.
At the start of the season I held my hand up and said that not even the hardest critic could complain about the start we had had, and I suspect that even the hardest critic must ask the question, " Why now ".
Steve Gibson's time at this club is over. He has no money and his decision making is amongst the worst I have ever seen. There can be no sentiment in football.
Can someone please tell me what is going on at this club and how it has been run so badly of late?
Steve Gibson, please come forward and explain yourself and explain why you are still the right man to entrust our football club with. If you have the bottle you should do the right thing and have a press conference explaining this decision, your decision to hire him in the first place, your decision to stand by him as we went down and your decision to keep him on at the start of the season.
If he was good enough then, then being one point off the top he's good enough now.

**AV writes: *puts tin hat on and cowers under desk* INCOMINGGGG!
The only pleasure I get from this news is that we may now be able to talk about football. It's been hard to force myself to read even this blog let alone the likes of FMTTM with the focus constantly on the manager.
Good luck Southgate and enjoy time with your family, this 'business' really isn't worth the hassle.
**AV writes: It think the fact that Southgate's position rather than the result had become the issue with every match has made this inevitable. We can only go forward if the club are united. This has removed the most visible and easily detached source of friction.
Meanwhile the happiest person in football today will be Mrs Southgate.
Wow. No one predicted that one. Glad of the points but that was a really poor and injury ravaged Derby. But 3 points is 3 points.
As for Gareth, I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for all his efforts. For reasons already outlined it was a difficult job and he did it to the best of his abilities. In the end every manager gets the sack so no shame in it.
But we need an experienced manager especially as we have a largely inexperienced squad. Two names stand out to me Curbishly and whispering Steve Coppell. I can only imagine Gibbo already has someone in mind and that the decision was made at 5 o’clock last Saturday.
The King is Dead, long live the King.
Now there are no excuses. Now is a time for unity, pride and MFC to set a new record of home wins!!
AV what is our record of consecutive home wins?
I think that my earlier suggestion of Merlin the Magician as a new manager is as good a suggestian as any I have heard.
However I think that a more important appointment would be someone to head up a new P.R. department, because since I travelled 26,000 miles to see the team that I have supported for over sixty years win the Carling Cup MFC could be used as a perfect example of how not to relate to supporters and keep them on side.
Is Tony Black's tongue firmly stuck into his cheek following the 9.30 post? Go on, it's a wind up, or someone impersonating TB!I suppose it is one way of encouraging a deluge of e-mails.
I'm sure that for the vast majority of those who have been calling for Gareth Southgate to be replaced, the decision to finally remove him will be greeted with relief, profound sadness and trepidation
Relief, because from the first day he was appointed many of us felt instinctively and logically that it was the wrong decision. There is no comfort in being proved right. Since GS took over his performance is littered with records of the wrong kind - he was out of his depth, doing a job he was ill equipped to do at a time when the club was down-sizing whilst at the same time consciously feeding the fans false expectations...
Profound sadness, because virtually everybody remembers his achievements as a player and captain. He led us to our first trophy, his commitment to the cause was never doubted, and he was inspirational at times.
When he made the move to become Manager his integrity and intelligence simply weren't enough - he lacked tactical awareness, he couldn't judge a player, he consistently failed to remove the fear that paralysed the team on almost every big occassion. Statistically, he will probably rank as Boro's worst ever Manager, and that's a tragedy for a guy as genuinely nice and as committed as he is, and who achieved so much for us as a player.
Trepidation because Steve Gibson has lost his aura: the fans have been consistently deceived, the decision to appoint GS was proved catastrophic, and until today he failed to see and act upon what was eveident to tens of thousands of us who have the clubs interests at heart. Does he have the judgement to make the right appointment now??
The ultimate responsibility for the position we now find ourselves in is, as Richard has pointed out repeatedly, Steve Gibsons - this doesn't change the fact that GS lacked the ability and experience to manage the club...
I will always be gratefull to GS for his time as a player and a captain. I will not forget that through his time as a Manager he gave it his best shot and put his heart and soul in to the job. I don't believe that he's cut out to be a Manager but whatever he does I sincerely wish him the very best of luck and every success
I dont think you'll have many problems getting this blog past the 200 post mark!
So 4 questions for you AV:
1) how many of the backroom staff will go with him?
2) Who's in charge in the meantime?
3) Will the new Manager have any money to play with that SG has been hiding down the back of the sofa from Gareth, like he did with Robbo?
4) Will there be any sort of admission from the club that the rest of the internal structure is massively flawed and decision making right up to the level of KL has been dreadful and that he needs the bullet too(in my humble opinion)?
Curbishley gets my vote too, but whoever the new man is he needs talent and experience and the nerve to shout down the board when they make stupid decisions.
**AV Writes: Initially Coops and Agnew will stay. Whether they will be happy under the new boss - who we think is bringing one person with him - is another question.
AV
TB raises some very valid points and you shouldnt worry about incoming.
I wouldnt be as vitriolic about Gibbo as he was, I think they all have the clubs best interests at heart.
You mentioned the poison Chalice that Gate inherited and we have raked over the coals often enought about the fact McClaren left at an opportune time with an ageing, expensive squad happy in cup ties but not as eager at the Reebok in February.
Ticket Gate took place on Macs watch and even as the glory faded after Eindhoven the job of restructuring the squad and club had started.
Gate was brave to take on the job and in truth the Unholy Trinity took the club onwards from there, maybe downwards is a better term.
The club is supposedly in a healthier financial position though I am in no place to comment. I expect the prospect of crowds below 18,000 on a regular basis would be a huge concern.
TV money has fallen but even the predicted revenue has been trashed by the fact we have been ignored for live matches.
We are handily placed for a promotion push and would have been even healthier but for the horrendous home form. The point I pinched from John Powls about Johnson, left wing, two goals speaks volumes.
I didnt want Gate to fail and expected the end of November to be the tipping point but in communications yesterday with John we thought it may come far sooner. John said Gibbo wasnt spending as much time at the Riverside and I responded he is in Jersey because the football was bad and he was singing you're getting sacked in the morning. How prophetic.
The worry was that Gibbo sacked Gate because we were in a mess. Attendance wise we are but thanks to the generosity of those around us we are handily placed in the league.
The right decision over his replacement could see us kick on, it will certainly boost attendances as long as the players dont sulk.
Gibbo and the Count need to sit down and think about what they have done. It may well prove to be a wise move if we can kick on.
I would like to thank Gate for all his hard work but it was time for him to move. He was starting to look haunted and I am sure his wife and kids will rally round. Just wish him all the best.
If he visits the club I hope everyone will make him welcome. We fans had nothing against him personally. He was in the right place at the wrong time.
You can't say we've climbed to only one point from the top - it's rather that others have fallen to one point above us. What's more relevent to our current form is that we are now only three points from tenth.
But I agreee that ultimately this was a political decision - Southgate had lost a significant portion of the fans and this group would not be cutting him any slack. So on that basis he had passed his sellby date and would not recover his standing anytime soon.
Perhaps also Gibson seeing Johnson giving a significant contribution to winning the game by finally playing on the left had probably not gone unnoticed - what would have been if we'd managed to gain those eight points lost needlessly.
Though Gibson had probably already made his mind up after Saturday but given how little time there was before the Derby game he kept his powder dry.
I also agree it's time for the novelty of an experienced man in charge.
I don't think Mrs Southgate is very happy now. I think this must be hard to take by Gareth and hence difficult for the whole family. But perhaps in the long run she might be happy.
Stece Coppell, any one? Experienced I think and available.
Steve has managed Crystal Palace, Brighton and Brentford, as well as guiding Reading to the Premier League for the first time in 2006. He is credited with discovering players such as Ian Wright and Kevin Doyle who went from unknowns to household names and international footballers.
Up the Boro!
Firstly I would echo the sentiment of the announcement and some of the comments above. Southgate was a top player and skipper of the club. He took a poisoned chalice after Eindhoven when maintaining the level of achievement would have been a monster task.
He is an intelligent, honest and articulate man with a lot to offer. Sadly these qualities do not necessarily qualify you a a football manager. Perhaps a little more 'mongrel' is needed. I hope that even his fiercest detractors will wish him well for the future- no-one could argue that his heart wasn't in it.
Looking forward, you can't help but think that SG has someone lined up. I would think Curbishley would be the best choice, but wouldn't be suprised to see Nigel Pearson rock up.
The timing of this is absolutely shocking!!!
We had an international break less than a week ago with 10 days break there abouts, why then play two more games go through 20+ training sessions and then sack the manager after a 2-0 home win and going within a point of the top of the league and a game against a promotion rival in 3 days...!
Yes the crowd was its lowest ever but the reason for that started 18 months ago.
we can go back as far as cardiff in the fa cup, saving our skins on the penultimate game of the season. selling key players with experience and not replacing them in the transfer market.
Since xmas last year we knew we where doomed and the fans had turned why not do it then? Relegation; why not do it then?
We have had plenty of chances to make the change in far more appealing circumstances this seems to be a panic decision and one that could cost us a return to the Premier League.
We have got to go with experience we must appoint a proven manager with over 10 years in the job whether it be premiership or lower divisions.
We must have someone who can make players better to go along with the strategy
We must have someone with contacts as long as his arm and we must have someone who can spend money wisely in the transfer market.
We are never going to get a top top manager but a Strachan, Jewell, Curbishley, Johnson would all fit the bill. Souness is a no go after the newcastle sham and he did nothing at Blackburn.
We can take our time with this appointment i think, the coaches are all capable of taking temporary charge. Lets take our time and make sure we get the right man!
Come on Boro !!!!!!!!
Obviously I'm guessing here but I reckon the decisive moment came when Southgate started to blame the home support for his (and his coaches) sustained inability to motivate or manage the team. At this point the gap between the club and fans became a chasm which Southgate would inevitably fall into.
Personally, I find the timing a little odd and would have liked to have seen him eased out at the end of his second season when it was clear 'lessons were not being learned'. Although club was already on a downward spiral the slope wasn't so steep then. Now the incoming manager will have Southgate's team to work with for, at least, the next eleven matches until the transfer window opens.
The big positive is that the players now have the pressure to perform at home removed with Southgate and his coaches identified as the blocks to performance. I'm looking forward to seeing them express themselves without the 'inspirational' management speak which has seen them freeze far too often.
Agree with Tony Black, Gibson needs to go, and Keith Lamb too. How many players have complained about him after leaving?
I'm actually stunned by tonyblack's comments. I know its been on TB's agenda to see Gibbo go with Southgate, but at a time like this, when the action we've all been craving has been taken, to then as a first response call for the chairmans head seems ludicrous.
To not even see who's incoming and allow yourself a little sigh of relief and feeling of excitement at the possibilities (I'm no foam hander but after all the negativity I've felt of late - I can't wait to see what will happen) makes it look like there is no joy to be had by TB in football.
I'm not looking to start an arguement, and might look like a johnny come lately upstart, whereas TB has been banging his drum for an age, we're all entitled to an opinion but that of some people defies logic regardless of how long they may or may no have been around!
I usually enjoy TBs posts interestingly enough! Maybe the shock to the system was too much?
UP THE BORO
The timing of it was probably not something that was unplanned or unprepared by SG. I will reckon like when he brought Robbo and then McClaren in there will already be someone lined up.
That said Gareth's after match comments last night were very much uninspiring and sounded more aopolgetic rather than determined leadership and this may have tipped the balance, only SG knows.
Gareth is a thoroughly decent man and was a great Skipper and I will rememebr him as that. The Managerial task was unfair and barring a miracle was always doomed for failure. At least he can say on his CV that he left MFC one point off the top. Good luck to him and with recharged batteries and a less challenging post with lower expectations (Ipswich?) he could in time learns from his time here and put it to good use.
Curbs has to be the preferred option and then big Nige. Definitely not Strachan, Souness or Johnson.
A very sad day!
Why wasn't this either done at the end of last season or wait until Christmas to see how things were progressing.
Good luck Gareth.
As for a replacement, I would like to see Coppell given the job.
Can I coin the phrase "Strachanovites"?, please?
**AV writes: Brilliant. I'll be using that.
"Mass from Somerset said:
"Sad news but at least the moaners can't criticise Steve Gibson for not acting..........."
Oh but they can and will. Steve Gibson should have acted much earlier and then we'd still be in the Premier League.
On the positive side, a more bouyany atmosphere at the Riverside can only help encourage Johnson to stay.
Wow! I read some cryptic posts on the FMTTM messageboards late last night (US time), but the story took me by surprise this morning.
I think it's the right decision (it's later than I would have liked, but I think it's better late than never). Southgate is a good man and an honorable one, but he has struggled to get the best of his players.
So...who are we going to get?
Curbs -- Did a great job at Charlton...I'd be ok with him, but I couldn't imagine us doing anything exciting under him (like win a cup)
Souness -- great player for us, but he's wrecked every club he's ever managed (bar Rangers) with his anti-Midas touch, so "no thanks"
Keegan -- Hmmm...maybe he could be our messiah...I think it would be exciting for a season or two before he got mad at something, spat his dummy out and left the club
Strachan -- not a huge fan, but maybe he'd be able to motivate players
Hitzfeld -- has the pedigree, but I suspect that ship has sailed...we are twinned with a German town though...
Ferguson -- as long as we get first refusal on fringe Man Utd players
Clough -- maybe with some decent players he'd do well…
Schteve McClaren -- as long as he retained his Dutch accent and the gazette posted videos of his post-match conferences, I'd be happy (not really interested just loved the accent)
Gordon Brown -- a stern Scottish taskmaster in the Rioch mold…he will also soon be out of a job
This is a huge moment for the club. Get this right (like Sunderland with Bruce) and we can get the club moving in the right direction again. The alternative is unthinkable.
I must admit I feel completely underwhelmed by this inevitable decision. Feel sorry in a way for GS. Given a poison chalice where the job and money given to him was not the same as his predecessors.
Was the job too early for him? Probably but all through it he has held his head high and tried to do his best for the club he led to silverware. Never let us forgot that.
For me, and I suspect the bulk of boro fans, this decsion ahould have came after the Cardiff cup defeat. In truth he lost the crowd then.
Good luck for the future GS.
"Gibson Out"
Oh yeah? And who would buy the club? You?
So Gareth's gone vecause we've lost 10,000 supporters. Would Strachan, Curbishley or Jewell be such an exciting appointmnet that those 10,000 supporters would come back?
NO.
Despite the sacking we shouldn't lose sight of the important issue that has concerned many people on this blog for the last couple of weeks - i.e. Will Forever Dormo get the 35,000 post?
Hahahahha im sooo happy about this! We finally have been released from this living nightmare - Thankyou Gibbo... tough but fair decision!
AV you tease!!! Come on spill the beans. In response to Jaguar Boy at 10.15 you state ‘**AV Writes: Initially Coops and Agnew will stay. Whether they will be happy under the new boss - who we think is bringing one person with him - is another question.’
Who is the new man????? What have you heard? Was the one man Mervyn Day?? Be the first to tell all come on!!!

I dont want Souness either but in the interests of fairness he took over Blackburn in the doldrums. In sucessive seasons they won the League Cup and qualified directly for Europe via the league.
They then started struggling in the league whilst playing in europe the following year as gravity took over as it does for many clubs who over achieve. Sound familiar?
He would not be my choice but it would be unfair to say he did nothing at Blackburn. But he did a cracking job up the road at Toon for which I will be forever grateful.
TonyBlack
I have also been with you and all the others, campaigning against the Southgate appointment and continued tenure. When GS, survived despite relegation, it was clear he was on borrowed time and that the end of October would be the cut-off date for a decision as to his future.
The decision to appoint Southgate was not one of SG's finest and I too have called for him to go if he can't continue what he started and we all signed up to. As I said in my previous post, with hindsight and the problems being faced by other clubs, the actions he has taken on the financial front (self-inflicted? Another point of debate) mean we still have a club run by one of us and developing our own, which is something to be proud of.
No matter how painful and divisive the process has been to get rid of Southgate – he has now gone and SG now has to appoint a manager who can galvanise the resources of this club (and this includes the supporters) and realise the Gibson dream that I hope we all still subscribe to.
TB, it's been a long hard road and the “I told you so” isn't very nice, but let's wait and see what SG's response is, before calling for his head. It is probably the biggest decision of his tenure, if he gets this wrong then no, doubt, we and many others will be campaigning “to the point of irritation” for his removal.
Utterly bemused. Totally bemused. I wasn't GS's biggest fan I'll admit, and turning on final score to see us 1-0 down against Watford on Saturday was annoyingly predictable, but why now? You can only presume that Gibbo spent the entire international break trying to secure a replacement, and they've only just agreed to the deal - hence the late night cloak and daggers operation.
AV - any whispers of the above going on? It seems foolish to sack GS now with a big game on Saturday unless the replacement is already nailed on.
And, is it definitely Strachan + 1? How certain are we here?
Not my choice, but hopefully he can give the necessary kick up the backside, and he has been here before way back when. Personally I would have gone for Curbs, followed by Coppell, then Strachan as a 3rd. Perhaps Gibbo did too!
I think the main thing is that Gibbo finally took the move that was needed to ease the pain from relegation. He ummed and aahed about it, but all the non-renewals and 10,000 off the gate tell the story - people had no desire to turn up and watch the same thing as last season, except with the added kick in the teeth of being mugged by Cleverley and co rather than Drogba and co.
Yes GS was given a very hard task, and one which Gibbo himself admitted was hard. But he had 3 years, invested some good coin in the last season and a half in the PL and got us relegated. Almost any other team in the PL, with the exception of West Brom who deliberately played tight with the money, would have sacked their boss for causing relegation. The fact that we didn't, when it was almost clearly down to GS, was mystifying and frustrating.
Now though, that has been removed. A new man coming in will complete the root and branch clear out, and take away the negativity and failure associated with GS and the old regime. That's just the way it is.
Let's just hope that Gibson gets it right this time...
12 months too late.
Whats all this talk about Curbs? Absolutely no possibility of him leaving London.
Coppell has huge respect throughout the game - mainly from the way he conducted himself in his playing days - a ManU player that everyone liked - a remarkable achievement in its own right. Management wise - one promotion with Reading wasn't it? other than that nothing to write home about.
Jewell, Strachan, Souness etc dream on. Plus plenty of names who prefer the easy money of punditry. One thing all of them have in common which wuld almost certainly rule them out of the reckoning. These are all experienced managers.
This is still the same Steve Gibson.
Internal promotion for Colin Cooper - you heard it here first.
**AV Writes: Initially Coops and Agnew will stay. Whether they will be happy under the new boss - who we think is bringing one person with him - is another question.
Was that deliberate AV ? If you know he's bring one person with him you must know who it is !
For me, it has to be Curbishley, with out a doubt... if we can get him. The man has a proven track record - achievement of excellence with a mediocre Charlton and a great escape with West Ham.
And have you noticed that both of those clubs went into immediate decline when Curbishley left them? This fella has guts, tactical awareness, stamina and will want to play attractive football. Come on Mr. Gibson, get on that phone.
We are only one point off the top - COME ON BORO!
In a shock move today Steve Gibson announced he would be appointing a manager that would put the hope back in MFC. "The fans have lost hope" he said.
"In a revoloutionary move I am giving them hope" After successful talks with the womans FA he announced the appointment of Hope Powell as the new manager.
"This is in keeping with ensuring Boro as the laughing stock of the Championship.
A spokesman for Grimsby FC said "Phew!!"
Souness? Keegan?? Pleeasse Noooooooooooo!!!
a quick google search says strachan has always had Mr Garry James Sidney Pendrey as his assistant manager so possibly him
**AV writes: I couldn't possibly comment.
An hour AV, an Hour!!!! What about my lunch?
Doesn’t sound like we are negotiating a release with another club then.
I’m going for Curbs then, will he be in, in time for Preston.
Nobody seems to have picked up on AV revealing that he thinks the new manager will be bringing one man with him, meaning...AV KNOWS WHO IT IS !
Also, AV reckons he'll be using Giles' 'Strachanovite' suggestion in the future... So it's the Ginger Whinger !!
Any comment AV or have you said enough ?!!
**AV writes: *Looks at watch* I've probably said too much.
Aren't the club always going to have to deal with lower crowds due to the economic problems of the area? Jobs are uncertain , the cost to watch a game are huge & the chance of competing against the global clubs are becoming even slimmer by the year.
I wld argue that lower crowds weren't all to do with GS.
Goodbye Gareth, hello Mr Strachan.
A bit of passion on the touch line and some good after match interviews.
C'Mon Boro!
Copied from 'HOME SICKNESS STRIKES AGAIN' blog.
Wow, this is like reading fiction. Boro win at home (at last) and Southgate is relieved of his position with immediate effect.
I came in from work (5 hours behind in the US) dreading looking up the result only to find the mighty Boro won 2-0. I read this on sportinglife.com before switching to mfc.co.uk.
Well you can imagine my surprise when sportinglife mentioned nothing, only to be greeted by a headline a plethora of Boro supporters have been hoping for, for a long time.
I do feel sorry for a certain Mr. Southgate, but was very dissapointed in him when he said "judge me on this season. This is my team", only for BORO to get relegated and him not doing the honorable thing in resigning. That really turned me against him.
Well, now for a new start. Please Sir Steve, get us a manager that knows what he is doing, not someone on work experience. A manager that knows how to change a match with substitutions will be a start.
Fiction?, or just a good dream?
Come on Boro!
Looking forward to Big Gordon coming to town. He's hilarious and should at the very least raise a few smiles one way or another !
Not long now AV, you must be close to bursting !!
I've been listening to Radio Tees online this morning (there's always a first time) and the smart money from those in the know seems to be on Strachan.
Though there are a few takers for Keegan (god forbid) and I even heard somebody say they wanted Souness (Doh).
I like the sound of Strachan, he's got good experience and would be no mug - plus he's got a great sense of humour (which is always useful for managing Boro).
I am sad to see that GS will not b here as the manager to take us back to the premier,as i am more than sure that is and what will have happened.
Three defeats at home and we are in a crisis? No. When we won 2-0 our position is good but there are supporters who wanted him gone no matter what our status.
The drop in attendence at the riverside well apart from the first game i am sure alot of them were unwilling to watch us play those teams win or lose instead pointing the finger at GS as reason for their loyalty waning.
Now the manager has gone they will stay away citing KL and SG as the reason ,a new manager might bring em back for a couple of games initially but not until end of the season will we see the glory boys come back prob about 8000 of them saying they have never doubted it would happen and they havent missed a game .
We do have some fans with knowledge but a lot of winging child like babies who wouldnt step foot in the riverside if we were having half the bad times we have had in the past,or the problems of teams in this league or the one above us.
I hear someone ask for S gibsons head because they are sure he has ran out of money - unless you are his accountent and I doubt it, you know nothing about this club.
I am sure SGs plan is to make it self suffient as it needs to be that way, Rockliffe park will go a long way to helping this become reality he cares so much for this club has done so much, so that we have a club for the people of this town that you doubters and moaners should hang your head in shame. This man has put more at personal risk for MFC than anyone else can claim too.
TONYBLACK u are just full of venom and hate u think that GS being sacked is proves that the drivill u spout was right and justified ?NO!!! and so u turn it to the chairmen and excecs SAVE SOME HATE FOR YOURSELF u nasty child
AV the list so far is full of championship managers, not better by far than the manager we have just let go .
THANK YOU GARETH SOUTHGATE FOR TAKING THIS CLUB TO YOUR HEART AND GIVING US THE PASSION AND COMMITMENT YOU HAVE THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER
Has everyone forgot the disparaging comments by Gordon Strachan when he turned down the chance to join the club as a player citing the porr quality of the area ect??
Not me.
an Hours up
Come on who is it? Strachan or Curbishley?
**AV writes: Oh go on then. Later editions of the Gazette can exclusively reveal that Boro will name Gordon Strachan as their new manager tomorrow after fine-tuning the deal this afernoon. He will bring Garry Pendry with him as his assistant. The link should be on the gazettelive.co.uk website now.
Skybet offering 1-5 odds for Strachan, are you legally allowed to bet on it AV?
and would you recommend us all staking the house on it right now?
Stop the speculation it's Strachan. AV has even laid a few clues
I got the smile back driving home after last night's match. Wasn't in bed 10 minutes when my mobile went into overdrive with post midnight texts about GS's dismissal.
Sven Goran who ? McClaren as his number 2
Don't be silly Christopher.
Still "Gutted!!" Was hoping I would able to change my name today!
Correct me if I am wrong but what has Strachan achieved in English football as a manager? Relegation with Coventry!? - Fantastic. They should of gone down even earlier under him but a team who plays in red was deducted three points.
Would be interesting if they're any quotes linked with him over the 3 points farce, I remember Harry Redknapp sticking his nose in - then of West Ham but can't remember if the ginger whinger stuck his nose in.
Hmmm maybe Gibson has a strange attraction for ginger managers or maybe he is just attracted to inept managers.
This appointment doesn't fill me with any hope at all. Job for the boys!!
It doesnt really matter who we want, even if we get the right person into the interview room Lambie will shoot the deal straight in the head. Gareths leaving was inevitable, but Lambie needs to go as well. Without the very best there in his capacity we will never attract the right candidates.
I'm sure some enterprising folk are currently scouring the internet for a supply of "Ginger Jimmy Wigs" to sell outside the Riverside at the next home match.
David Craig from SkySports said he had received a text from a collueague yesterday saying Gate was going and that Strachan was going to be the new man.
If it is Strachan at least we will get some good quotes. I remember after one match at the Riverside he was asked in which areas of the pitch Boro had been better. His response the green ones out there.
AV
Your hour is up. We have shown blind faith and you havent delivered as yet.
Or is it a case of judge me at the end of the blog.
Or do you need a root and branch reform of the back room geeks.
Or will the Holy Trinity of Uncle Eric, Phil and Vic all share responsibilty.
**AV writes: Or have I been busy writing? You decide...
So its Strachan then?
On MFC.co.uk Gibson said he made the decision before last nights game (12 game mark) a major point was the games against the sides around like WBA and Bristol City.
A plan is in place for a new manager so AV might be about to announce the manager in the next couple of hours....we will wait and see.
Is it strachan then? The hour is up!!
I believe that Steve Gibson didn't sack Gareth Southgate at the end of last season because he felt that over the course of last season he had imposed such restrictions on him financially that it was unfair to do so.
Cutting the wage bill, a nett spend of nil on transfers and most crucially being unable to sign desperately needed players in January when the distress flares had gone up point to this.
Unfortunately the hostility towards the manager probably cost the club between 1000-2000 season ticket renewals and it is quite clear that the club have been operating in a situation where the ONLY topic of conversation after every result so far is the position of the manager.
This is totally unhealthy and counterproductive for the club.I think for that reason alone it is the correct decision but really should have been made in the summer.
We all know if the teams around had put any type of run in they would have been out of sight by now.
Our home form was relegation stuff and even with last nights win wasnt much better as Derby by all accounts were very poor.
Good luck Gareth with whatever you do you will be remembered by me for your playing days at the Boro.
Gordan Strachan.. he's obviously never met the Prince of Darkness. Should be a fun time at least.
Remind me, what's Gordon actually ever won as a manager, other than in a two team league north of the border, Oh yes, Coventry and Southampton were great successes wern't they!
Will his first job be to gaurantee the return of the 10000 missing bodies with immediate effect?
I read recently that Gordon is now only interested in managing a 'Big' club as he thinks he deserves it...bit like big Sam, who in the end couldn't handle it. Changed your mind then Gordon?
Good luck though, you could be just what the club needs at this juncture.
I hope it is Strachan. I can remember my sister had one of those Gonk toys. It looked like a troll, only wore trousers and had a mass of Flame red hair. If that was not modelled on Gordon Strachan then I’m a Dutch man.
Well this appointment should sink well with those crying for an experienced manager. Three successive league titles at Celtic - not bad looking CV. Also experience in the PL.
Hey, these men should be available before one can make such an appointment. So no complains from the anti-Southgate brigade I suppose? I hope the crowd must be well over 20 000 or otherwise the anti-Southgate group was smaller than thought of.
I was supporting GS most of the time. But this could be interesting now, too! Up the Boro!
Welcome to Messrs. Strachan & Pendry.
Glad that it's been moved on quickly. With a big game away to Preston on Saturday we need no 'eyes off the ball' - in any sense - and for everyone to hit Preston's ground running.
Strachan seems to be the front runner at the moment, and to me his appointment would be a coup for the club. He's always come across as tactically astute, he has had a lot of managerial success - and yet, quite a few people on here are saying "definitely not Strachan".
But, they don't explain why, so I'm confused - can someone tell me why they don't like him?
And it's good to have TB back, just when you thought he was going to be happy! He's right, of course, that this change should have been made some time ago - though unless he is a secret multimillionaire, his demands for SG to step down seem... ill judged. An alternative would be necessary, and I don't fancy the foreign ownership route myself.
I've already seen some nicknames for Gordon Strachan coming out on this Blog and elsewhere. The poor man's not even got the job and he's being ridiculed! Sheesh.
His initials are remarkably similar to the former gaffer though.
Shame on Gazette. I refer to your survey on Gareth Southgate.
You were not able to spell the name correctly for the most successful manager in the history of Boro - Steve MacLaren. Luckily you got the club's name correct there and not Middlesborough FC!
Up the Boro!
**AV writes: That's what you get when you let technos get their hands on anything requiring words. That said, they would not believe how many times I correct the spelling his name by die hard fans on here every single day.
Thank you for what you tried to do at Boro Gareth, I think we all know you gave it your best shot.
However, having eventually declaring my hand last weekend after another home defeat demanding some action from Gibbo, I believe it is the only decision that could have been made. But I didn't expect such a quick return on my plea.
So where now? I would vote for Curbs, as I indicated in that last post, and echoed by John Powls today, as I feel he is possibly the best option having managed a club in similar straits to where MFC find themselves now, and been quite successful. But would he give up his London home life and his cozy pundit job with Show Time Sports to come to the frozen norf to do a job that maybe now would not fill him with the same enthusiasm? Probably not.
AV has put out a few "clues" that we may see Stratchan unveiled? He would have been one of my choices, but I'm not sure if his persona will fit well with Steve Gibson or The Count; he certanly doesn't pull his punches. We'll certainly be entertained in his tv interviews (if we ever get on the box.)
Whatever happens, and whoever takes over, it must signal the beginning of a new togetherness from everyone connected to MFC and Boro. Let's hope so.
Couldn't help chuckling at the Strachan story on the site - having read his wikipedia entry this morning there was a strong sense of deja vu!
I know how to cut and paste! Can I be a journalist?
**AV writes: You can if you can get Steve Gibson to phone you at home at midnight too.
And so the end is near, Ive yet to Yada yada yada !!
This sacking despite it's timing is so long overdue I can't help but laugh.
Crowds down 10000 since last season and im proud to say Im one of them !!!! If the fans are going to take responsibility for forcing the manmger out then lets hope those same fans take the same responsibility to get behind the team !!!!
Southgate showed us his managerial acumen against Cardiff in the FA Cup...easily the worst performance I have ever seen... GUTLESS UNORGANISED PATHETIC !!!! Everything GS was not as a player and thats what hurt so much !!
So we bring in the terrier Gordon S. I just hope ppl arent expecting pretty football overnight !!!! We might get fight, we might get bottle, which is a start but I fear for the type of football we will be served up and that is what forced the fans away !
Good luck to both GS's for the new one your going to need it !!
Just read the latest news article very interesting.
Strach as a player Man Utd, Leeds Premiership title Glowing !!
Strach as a manager Coventry sacked after relegation, Southampton - Walked away, Celtic - success but who wouldnt in Scotland !!
History repeating ????
UTB
Thank god for some sense after three years. Gareth the man and Gareth the manager are two different things. He had to go. Hopefully we can get a man who believes in good football and giving people a chance.
Maybe we can convince that certain great in YARM to come out of retirement and propel us on to greater things. Interest renewed......... up the boro!!
I don't know why I didn't recognise the omens earlier when yesterday a red squirrel came up to my living room window all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed (as they do) whilst I was posting to the blog about Gareth's tenure hanging by a thread - though I'm not sure if the squirrel was using zonal organisation for the acorns but he was definitely interested in the grass roots.
I'm gutted. I can't find words at the moment. I just feel totally sick. For now I'll repeat macca09.
THANK YOU GARETH SOUTHGATE FOR TAKING THIS CLUB TO YOUR HEART AND GIVING US THE PASSION AND COMMITMENT YOU HAVE THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER
Weren't Coventry under Strachan the team that profited from our 3 point penalty?
**AV writes: They were indeed.
As a West Brom fan formerley exiled to Boro land, I have a vested interest in the new appointment at the Riverside. And I have to say, Pearson's your man.
I rated him when he came in as caretaker after Robson left; to my mind we should have kept him instead of going for Mowbray. He's doing a good job at Leicester and would definitely get Boro up (in second place, I hope - with the Geordie bandwagon falling short in the play-offs!)
I wasnt certain about Curbs. Thinking back to his teams at Charlton they were all workmanlike and tended to play 4-5-1. Certainly not thrill a minute.
Strachan will at least be entertaining in interviews.
AV, OK you were doing journalist type things (squabbling over those choccie biscuits)
Maybe we could have a where next Talking Boro.
Southgate did what he was put there to do - assist in the downsizing of the club financially and the downsizing of the supporters ambitions. If he could have kept the club in the Premiership it would have been a miracle and to be fair Gibbo backed him to a degree (not enough) in the transfer market.
Southgate was the patsy, fall guy or whatever for Gibson's and Lamb's downsizing strategy. Gibson will always be held in high esteem for what he has done in the past for the Boro but his shiny image is tarnished by what he has brought about over the past three years plus.
The new manager will be a very interesting choice. If it's an experienced, dynamic and forward thinking guy then it will indicate that Gibbo's draining of the clubs assets may have come to an end although I still think Johnson will go in January.
If it's another patsy, standby for some more asset stripping. It will be interesting to see what happens to Southgate's backroom staff and as he is such a great manager in Gibbo's eyes where Southgate ends up. It will almost certainly be a lower league club where he should have started in the first place.
AV - Your job maybe that bit harder if Strachan is confirmed judging by these interviews!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfEV0iO0iCw
And a wee bit of copy and paste - what celtic supporters thought of Strachan......
"When Strachan came to Celtic I was delighted, but within weeks a blind man could see that he didn't know what he was doing. His style of play is so bad and boring that you can have a better night with 5 gallons of VALIUM.
"This style of football has helped turn the atmosphere inside Celtic Park like a morgue, it is so bad that I have not bothered going to half the homes games this season. When I see him giving interviews I cringe. He once said that only the views of those in the game matters to him. Well Mr Strachan, between the cost of three season books, the cost of travelling to away Champions league games, preseason friendlies, testimonials etc my three sons and I must spend about £5,000 to £10,000 per year on Celtic and if our opinions don't matter then the sooner you leave Celtic the better.
"How many times has he said he knows what the problems are and he is going to fix them but still the boring problems go on and on. Last but not least, religion and playing for Aberdeen has nothing to do with it. I'm a protestant who has supported Celtic for 58 years and lots of my protestant family are also season ticket holders at Celtic park."
http://www.sportingo.com/football/a7844_why-dont-celtic-fans-love-wee-gordon-strachan
**AV writes: People who have complained about the way Gareth Southgate answers searching questions are about to get a shock.
Oh, and that's the 35,000th comment by the way. Where is Dormo? Now that's out of the way can we get our heads down and concentrate on the game.
Surely Ramos could be lured from CSKA Moscow.
Ravenelli anyone? LoL, Emerson as his assistant
Well we all seem to agree that what we need is a manager with experience, there are plenty of good ones available.
Strachan seems nailed on; in fact he's probably down at McCoy's signing the contract.
Personally I would like to thank Gareth Southgate for his determination and commitment as a player and as the manager. He was far too inexperienced for the job but he gave it his best shot. There are very few people in football with his integrity and I hope his managerial career flourishes elsewhere.
So now its time to pull together, get behind the team and go for it, there's a league to be won and we have the team to do it.Boro should do a marketing special on tickets to get a big crowd for the next home game.
Strachanovite - very good!
Pearson would be worse than Gate. I also don;t like Curbish. Let's get Strachan and cross our fingers.
A busy day for journos and for those posting to this blog. Sadly some of us have to go out to work from time to time.
One thought that occurs is that the crowd for the next home game should improve with the likes of "My name is scoredraw, boredraw, snoredraw...... and I'm a non-attender", and others deciding to return to the fold. It will be good to have you all back. Come on, you know you missed it!
Another is that this flurry of activity has probably caused the 35,000 mark to be buried like Pompeii, only to be discovered by some techie in years to come. I'm really saving myself for the big 50,000.
So there will be no tears. Maybe a gentle sigh at the thought of that shiny new Merc, but no tears. And I never warmed to the idea of those cigars rolled on the thighs of some suntry Cuban lady...... (I'd better stop here. I think I need to put the oven on. Pork or salmon tonight and I haven't decided yet). Might even need to pop over later to the Shark's Arms to dicuss events.
**AV writes: Oh no! He's missed again!
How sad that Gareth could not be the same inspiration as a manager that he was as a player and team captain. Gareth the man is second to none, unfortunately his tenure as manager was a disaster.
Not all the blame for the relegation and poor start to the new campaign can be laid at this feet though. No cash to strengthen in january, selling quality players and no funds available to buy credible replacements until it was virtually too late didn't help Gareths cause at all. Now he has paid the price of others administration of our beloved club.
I will always remember Gareth with great fondness and respect for skippering the team that won our only ever major trophy, not to mention his inspired defence in two consecutive European campaigns.
However, we now must move on. I read from the blogs that Strachan is on his way, and I groaned. His cv is hardly spectacular and he has a tendency to play his ' favourites ' and that can lead to a split dressing room. Is that what Boro fc really needs ?.
I would much prefer a manager with charisma and motivational skills and the ability to not only take us back to the prem, but has the drive and ability to take us back into Europe.
Alan Curbishley fills the bill for me, he has experience of managing clubs with similar finances and ambitions to ours, and he would have the respect of the playing staff too.
I want my team to be the best it can be, and Gordon Strachan does NOT fill me with optimism. The vocal minority, the boo boy brigade, who are busily laughing at Gareth Southgate being out of work will get what they deserve.
What is certain is that WHOEVER comes in, it will not be long before they are calling for HIS head. If we are not careful, that section of so called fans will drag us down the road that the shower on the Tyne are currently travelling. Their chairman is so desperate to be rid of them that he is trying to give the away, but can't find anyone willing to take it on. Be careful what you wish for, you might just have it granted.
Boro til I die.
To Gibbo - if it is Gordon Strachan, then I will start following the club again - if only to be able to watch Strachan's press conferences (which rank up there with Mourinho's for sheer entertainment !).
Of course, as an advocate of Curbishley for the job for the past year and a half, I would be similarly enthused with his appointment. Jewell or Coppell would also be good choice, experience mixed with promotion success.
AV: I cannot understand why people constantly mention Souness - he seems to simply be another Southgate - a great player with little or no track record of managerial success. Perhaps you can explain his appeal ??
The only surprise about Gareth’s dismissal is that it has taken so long. Steve Gibson claims it was his “the most difficult decision” he has had to make in football. That is palpable nonsense. It has been a very easy decision to take for at least a year. All that seems to have been difficult is for Gibson find the humility to admit to having made a mistake.
Reports today are saying that Southgate had lost the fans. The truth is that the triumvirate, Gibson, Lamb and Southgate, lost the fans well before the end of last season. But they said they didn’t care. Now it seems don’t care has been made to care. Acres of empty seats have achieved what no amount of reasoned argument could, particularly when the same triumvirate have been doing everything possible to suppress dissent from their flawed decisions.
This morning was the inevitable end to a rather sad interlude in the club’s history. In fact, I predicted today’s events on the May 13th blog. My only regret is that Gareth didn’t have the grace to resign and depart with dignity. I really hoped he would. But Gareth told us he would never resign because his little children would think that Daddy was a quitter. What are his children thinking today, I wonder? Daddy isn’t a quitter, but he is a crap manager?
For that lack of honesty, I cannot get misty-eyed over Gareth’s departure. I hope I will remember him only as the captain who lifted the Carling Cup, but that is now unlikely. He has sullied his reputation irrevocably by grimly clinging on until Gibson had to stamp on his fingers.
If Gordon Strachan is to become the new manager, one feature of his CV will not have escaped Gibson’s attention. He is a manager who usually knows when it is time to go.
Sad.
I'm now going to have to ditch the pack of cards I bought at the club shop last Saturday. Thought they were a bargain at the time but now I'm not so sure. Three jokers and only nine royal cards.
Made pontoon dodgy.
Rob said:

Fair play to him, he was also very effective in downsizing the gates.
I think Gutted!! is a goalpoacher, hanging around the 6 yard box hoping not to be noticed in case the ball happens to come along, and he can poke one over the line. Meanwhile, those of us in the blood and guts midfield, sweating it out in the boiler room (at work) with no thought of personal glory, lose out to the Fancy Dans....
35,004 was a good effort, I thought, particularly as I MIGHT have posted a sneaky quick one-liner instead of first reading the mountain of posts that had arrived in light of events.
But, as I have said, there will be no tears. I will learn the lessons and come back stronger next time, when I will truly be "up for it". Or something.
I am really looking forward to the interviews after the new manager takes control. And if he didn't accept the offer being put before him, I'd lose no sleep if the club turned to Curbs. Interesting times.
And if this is the appropriate time to say it, despite reservations about his appointment as manager, there was never any doubt of Southgate's quality as a player. I always thought of him as a "clean" player, who read the game better than most and gave his all. I will always remember his proudly holding the League Cup aloft at Cardiff, and his pumping fists to each side of the ground on winning at the Riverside - always a good way to get a roar from the crowd.
Good Luck for the future.
Now, let's get on with the job in hand. We have a Championship to win.
Have you listened to the free long radio interview at www.mfc.co.uk where Mr Gibson tells that he made the decision already around the time we played Leicester? And that preliminary talks with a successor have taken place before Watford game with a successor?
Great interview. Gibbo still has the passion for Boro! Up the Boro!
**AV writes: I'll link that later. I'm flagging a bit now after what feels like 80,000 words in the last 24 hours or so.
Pity someone like Strachan was not appointed 3 years ago, we would certainly still be a premiership team and probebly F.A cup winners last year
I am not on a mission to derail the new King but wonder why no one has responded to my post. Does it not matter that Strachan held contempt for the area not so long ago, openly criticising the quality of life in the area??
I am old enough to understand that football is no longer about fairytale's but to appoint someone who has so little affection for the place simply underlines Jerry Sindfelds point that we are merely supporting laundry.
Coppell - modest, quietly confident, hard working - personification of Middlesbrough
The one name that excites me is Kevin Keegan. The Riverside would be buzzing again with his appointment in my opinion. not sure if other fans would agree though bearing in mind his Geordie connections. BRING ON KING KEV!!!!!
What,one GS for another?
Personally I think its time Mark Page was given a shot. He's been reading the team out for years. You seem very sure AV, do I take it Keith Lamb has been removed from contractual negotiations?
**AV writes: We think GS for GS is a cost cutting measure. They needed to find a manager with the same initials so they could reuse the training gear. It was either him or Gary Speed. Or Ginger Spice. Insert your own joke here.
Well if it is indeed Strachan, we can look forward to some bizarre quotes:
“I'm just going to crumble like a wreck. I'll go home, become an alcoholic and maybe! jump of a bridge.”
“I've got more important things to think about. I've got a yogurt to finish by today, the expiry date is today.”
AV you've become all smug! Stop it! I wouldn't be happy with Gibbo ringing me up at midnight, no matter what the news! It was bad enough last night for me with all the texts coming through, no wonder I'm grumpy today.
And another thing... do any of you fellow bloggers actually do any work ... looking at the times you have been contributing today! Get back to work!
Actually, Strachan is my choice from a limited pot. Didn't want Coppell - always a quitter, but at least he wouldn't hang around listening to all the abuse Southgate has had to take"!
Some people incredibly moaning already, before any official announcement, you can't please some Boro fans. Can't believe they are questioning Strachans CV. It is ok (not brill, but not bad. Everyone thinks they can manage Celtic but what it does give you is enormous experience managing under a great pressure of expectation) When you consider who is actually available to us, Strachan is very high up the list. We can't afford to poach a manager, that would cost too much cash which we haven't got remember.
Come on Gibbo, get it announced, then let's get back to our promotion campaign.
" Is Tony Black's tongue firmly stuck into his cheek following the 9.30 post? Go on, it's a wind up, or someone impersonating TB!I suppose it is one way of
encouraging a deluge of e-mails. "
No. I'm truly shocked by the timing of this and the way it's been done after endless and monthly backing of Southgate.
For the record, I think it's the wrong decision at this time, no matter how long I've campaigned and how I don't rate the manager. One point off the top with no money and no squad makes this a stunning sacking, for me anyway.
The timing is all wrong and so is the sacking. Who else would have done better?
" TB, it's been a long hard road and the “I told you so” isn't very nice, but let's wait and see what SG's response is, before calling for his head. It is probably the biggest decision of his tenure, if he gets this wrong then no, doubt, we and many others will be campaigning “to the point of irritation” for his removal. "
I have never said this once.
I have had strong opinions and I have been vehemently against Southgate from day one, but I said many times before the end of last season that no one wins if we went down. I was more than happy to eat humble pie and I said so many times.
I have also always said sorry when I offended people and I have held my hand up when my posts went to far, and never once was I allowed to insult other people like macca09 has done.
My opinions of Southgate was always directed at his ability as a coach and manager and I always raved about him as a servant, a man, and a true gent and AV and others can back me up on this as I did so many times. The only time I went for him was when he said he would walk if we got relegated and then didn't.
I have never been vitriolic and I have never said I told you so. My problem was only that we should have gone for much better and didn't and that he should have gone when we still had chance to escape the drop.
For me this sacking is a shocking indictment of the poor way Gibson has run this club of late and testimony to his inability to make the right call at the right time.
I don't care that he took the decision weeks ago. Gibson praised and backed his manager all the way and beyond, and this season Southgate has done very well with what he had.
At the start of the season I said the same thing and I applauded him as he it was a job well done and I went on to say that even the most fierce critic had to say the same, a job well done so far.
I have never had a problem saying this and did when it was merited.
We are one point off the top of the table and have always been there or there abouts all season and so for me this is was the wrong decision at this time. If he was to be sacked, why even give him a shot at taking us back up?
It's shocking and something at this club smells very badly indeed.
TB
Strachan out! Isnt the right term Strachanista!
Anyway AV you are in disgrace for last night. There I was giving a running commentary of Radio Derby's view of the match when you disappear for a chummy break with the journos.
They were so on the ball they didn't know about Gates pending departure even though the lady in my cob shop in Derby knew he was going.
Then when I continued posting Radio Derby's comments you disappeared for yet more goodies (dressed up as after match comments from sundry players and club officials). You even let the 35,000 mark pass by without warnings!
You laud Gibbo's loyalty to his managers but show scant regard for one of your most regular (not necessarily interesting - a bit like Frank from Vicar of Dibley) posters.
Disgusted of Derby!
Gordon Strachan's ginger nut army!
**AV writes: If you were signed up to my "Typical Boro Pride" scheme you would have been given priority with important postings.
"jp said:
Has everyone forgot the disparaging comments by Gordon Strachan when he turned down the chance to join the club as a player citing the poor quality of the area...Not me."
It's started.
**AV writes: If the Second Coming happened in Teesside you could just see it: "He's done nowt for 2000 years".... "and last time it ended in a right mess"... "he only got the last job because of his dad,".... "and he couldn't man manage mavericks like Judas".... "Booo! Jesus out!"
I have felt sorry all day, grieving mildly about the shabbiness of the whole business, and not quite knowing what to think.
I think I'm sorted out a bit now. This is how it stands with me:
If, at the end of the season, we are in a better position than now (i.e., mathematically, that will be fewer than four points off the top spot), we can call it evens. (Well, keeping it all very cool and rational, not quite evens, because Gareth's done the tough transitional work for the club, so let's give Gareth a five points margin for that process - calculating it as a win we should have had and a draw where we should have won: over the period of transition, that seems reasonable)
OK, so, if the new manager wins the league by more than a point, it will all work out to be about evens and I shall feel that trashing the hopes and efforts of probably the best man in football was not an overall negative for our beloved (and his beloved, when last calculated) club.
Yes, it may all be OK. To be fair, though, we mustn't give the new man any money to spend, of course!
Right, so I find myself asking where do I stand so far as Strachan is concerned? Well, apart from Nigel Pearson and Tony Mowbray, I do not care about any of them. So I look objectively at things to give me a feeling of balance.
It seems unlikely, according to Celtic fans, that the football will be fun to watch; historically, he doesn't seem to give much of a toss about what fans feel; he has no record of success in English football. So, if he comes, I will, of course support the club with all my heart, as ever, but it may be the case that the awful rift between members of the Boro family will not be helped one jot. And that is supposed to be important to SG: and indeed it is very important!
The boards today have been depressingly full of people keeping the old acrimonies going, on both sides, which seems, frankly, to be in bad taste considering what it has all led to. The Boro website being full of plaudits for our fallen hero had a very suspect taste too.
Oh, I don't know. Time heals some things, but this has been a seriously bad day. If I were Gordon Strachan, I would look at how much affection there is on the boards for Gareth and look at the wouldn't touch this job with a bargepole, not unless there was a guaraenteed budget of about £60m if we get back up to the Premiership. Or, of course, unless he just wants a decent salary and a compensation package when it all falls apart.
I hope we're in a position to hire Gareth back again when he proves to be a diamond of far more worth than Cattermole, Boateng and Danny Graham all rolled into one "commercial package", but I somehow doubt that we will be dictating terms in that sort of a way in the foreseeable future!
Boro till I die! And can we please try to get together now that some blood has been spilt? Or do we have to keep arguing about who "won" these arguments? (We will never know, will we?)
Have we ever reached 100 posts in a day? Good work, AV. Especially as you had a match last night. Enough for a day. You can go home now and have some sleep. If SG calls midnight don't answer. You know the news already (about the new GS).
What a day! Forever Dormo, you must get 'education' and choose your work so that you're able to follow Boro in an office. It helps, like in my case, that the boss is situated abroad - so he does not see all! UTB!
**AV writes: Don't let Dormo fool you with his tales of heavy manual labour. He isn't digging ditches or working down a parmo mine for a living.
In the end it was all a bit sudden and a little bit sad but he must be sat at home now wondering if he'll ever get a better chance to make his mark - but enough of Dormo and the 35K, though it's perhaps appropriate that both winners and losers were gutted (by-the-way I had more squirrel analogies ready to rush out if only we'd been warned - was something distracting you today AV?).
I was listening to 5-Live earlier and Alan Green claimed to have been told at the weekend about Southgate's imminent sacking at the Burnley v Blackburn game by a reliable Championship source.
I also thought it was interesting that Gibson said he'd warned Southgate before the season that he would be dismissed at any point if he thought promotion was in danger.
The lesson to be learnt for all Boro managers is if you bring in an old experieced head to help you when you're struggling then you may as well serve your notice - for Robson & Venables read Southgate & Smith.
Still the biggest surprise of the day has been that Tony Black seems on the verge of leading the campaign to reinstate Southgate!
But, I'll end the day with punt that Boro will soon be running out to the sound of Queen's 'Flash' - "He'll save everyone of us..."
Just wondering what AV thinks of Gibson's comments that the new boss won't be in charge for Saturday? If its Strachan, why the delay? Also, apparently he's been on Irish telly tonight denying contact as well!
**AV writes: Our understanding is that he will watch from the stands on Saturday.
I do feel a sense of sadness given Southgates sacking. He is a good and dignified man who gave is best for our club but who ultimately fell short. I wish him well. I think most people feel he was sacked a year too late and the fact he wasnt of course reflects indecision and bad managment from Mr Gibson and Lamb.
I am decidedly underwhelmed at the prospect of Strachan. In my opinion he has achieved little and is not the manager I think will take the club forward. I can only see continuing mediocraty.
I for one would love to see Keegan come in - passionate, would play attacking football and would get the fans back in. Cant see it happening though. My other choices would include Curbishly or even Ravenelli - he has said he would like to come back. Sadly think I am going to be very dissapointed.

**AV writes: "We think GS for GS is a cost cutting measure. They needed to find a manager with the same initials so they could reuse the training gear. It was either him or Gary Speed. Or Ginger Spice. Insert your own joke here."
Graeme Souness would also have saved a few bob. But that's not in the least bit funny!
Okay, I've been for a jog through the woods to clear my head. I was so wound up that I knocked 30 seconds off my personal best time! So at least some good's come of this.
For me this is a sad day for Middlesbrough Football Club. Gareth wasn't sacked because of capability or results. He showed he was a capable Premiership manager with two mid table finishes in his first two seasons. A glance at the league table shows that results this season are good. We could go top on Saturday.
Look at the names being bandied around to replace him. Strachan, Curbishley, Coppell? They've all been relegated from the Premiership.
Southgate was sacked because of mob rule. Steve Gibson was forced to part with him because the anti Southgate atmosphere was making it almost impossible for the team to be successful. A decent man was forced out of his job by some of the very same fans that cheered as he lifted the Carling Cup, or joined in with his famous fisted salute. Well done. Hope you're all happy now.
I'm sure Gareth Southgate will go on to prove again that he is a capable manager at another club.
Strachan would be a mistake in my (absolutely worthless) opinion. I don't like him. He thinks he's funny. He's not. He's arrogant. I'm "against him from day one". But I won't be coming on here to reitterate that after every defeat.
Like I said, a sad, sad, day for our club.
So it's finally over then.
I have stuck by Gareth and supported him throughout, but I have to say I am relieved that the decision has been made. The acrimony between fans over the last few months has made this blog very unpleasant reading.
Thanks to Gareth for his time as manager. I think in the scheme of things he has done a good job. The club is much better structured now, we have moved on a lot of the old timers and misfits and have a younger and pacier squad. Despite some high profile failures, the clubs transfer policy in recent seasons has also been vastly improved (take a bow also Mr Lamb). I am sure Gareth will be back at work soon and will become an excellent manager and enjoy many successes. I wish him well.
Now at least we can look forward and talk about something different. Welcome to Mr Strachan. I think of the candidates he was the strongest, and I'm happy with the appointment. Of course, as is the nature in football these days some people are searching for the opening signs of potential failure in the new man. But for a change they will be in a very small minority so we should be able to enjoy a couple of years of relative peace before the rancour starts and people start calling for his head and saying "I told you so"...then again it might start earlier if he doesn't deliver promotion in his first season!
So off we go.
PS. Welcome back Tony.
PPS. Congratulations Gutted, comiserations FD
......so you had it first from AV in his reply at 9.35pm (last night). Might we have, not a manager, but a Messiah? Hope it turns out better than it did on Tyneside. And it would be insensitive to mention Palestine.
And another thing....If we are now to have a new manager, can we do four other things?
1. Can we start off all supporting whoever it turns out to be? Of course it is always possible GS (ii) might not like what he sees and might not agree the offer that is made. In which case we should really support the second, or third, choice (as appropriate).
2. Can we agree to be nice to Tony Black (at least to start with)?
3. Actually an agreement to avoid insults might be a good idea (except if they sneak in a post to snaffle a Big Number).
4. Can we agree to turn up in large numbers to the next home game in order to show solidarity and increase the chance of another win? (Obviously those in Germany, Baku, W Australia, Finland, USA and similar places in different time zones might be excused because of the short notice, but longer term....).
Actually when I think of it there could be more "other things to do" but if I don't stop now there will be trouble from a significant other, so maybe this is a time to say "Goodnight".
I'd be happy with Strachan. Certainly an improvement on Southgate and with a fair amount of experience and charisma. Our young squad desperately needs leadership and guidance. Strachan will offer that.
AV
great first impression - let's hope our new management team don't read too far down this blog but instead focus on you (next) welcome article!! Garry Pendrey (correct spelling) take note.
Just a thought though - yet another defender in the coaching ranks - well at least we get a classy midfieder as manager. Oh and do you know both Strachan and Pendrey share a birthday (yes slow day at work here in Oz - *thinks should be on a beach somewhere!!)*
Scoredraw - will you be at the Plymouth game?
TB - If that is the best you can come up with then take another sabbatical. Alternatively we await your illuminating thoughts on what will happen under our new regime, and not your destructive thoughts on what won't change - speak up we can't hear you down here...
Werdermouth - I waited around until 2am for that tap in from 3yds only for my posting to not even appear and Gutted!! to steal in front of me. Anyway every one knows 35 is nothing, life begins at 40 then a 50 is always worth celebrating. I reckon we'll make a decent forward line provided others can keep getting it into the box.
Gutted!! Mickey Burns more like.
Ian Gill - how was work yesterday - I work with 2 mates from Derby and our victory was totally lost in the Southgat announcemnt -
Time to win matches and start enjoying the football again. Enough politics. Come on Gibbo get Strachan announced so we can enjoy this ride back to the Premier League.
Well boys and girls, a disadvantage of living in america is you are 5 hours behind the hustle and bustle of Linthorpe Rd, Boro Rd, and the Clevy centre. However, it does mean that you can post blogs when everybody else is asleep, especially when you have had a bad day at work and far too many bourbons while the wifey is sleeping next door.
Not that I can claim to be in the same company as such esteemed contributors as Ian Gill (any relation to Alan Gill), forever dormo, tony black, john powls, wedermouth, etc. etc.etc. but I should usurp AV with a quote from 1am in the morning pally park time after the derby game.
QUOTE
Oh my god.
7.58pm in Indiana USA and read on sky sports that Gareth has been sacked.
Nice sentiment from Gibbo, I agree completely and I said it a while ago, Gareth is a great bloke, and a great captain, and a great servant for middlesbrough football club. Just not a great manager yet !
Hope we get someone like Strachan, someone with a bit of mongrel in them, don't think we want Curbishley or Coppel.
Hopefully Gareth takes a well earned rest, take the pressure off himself and his family, get a low pressure job on the telly and then who knows in years to come after his batteries are recharged, he might be able to come back bigger and better.
All the best Gareth, all our best wishes, and I am sure it won't stop you supporting the Boro. Brave decision Gibbo.
Up the Boro, the Boro's going up, the Boro's going up to stay, ay.
UNQUOTE
Anyway, methinks that Strachan will be a brilliant coup, as he has a bit of "mongrel" in him, Smogdownunder I see you picked up on that, where do you live, I was in Melbourne for 12 years but currently transferred to the midwest on an expat assignment for a few years but will be going back to victoria in 2011 I think.
I hope AV publishes this as I am heading off from Indianapolis on Friday to Manchester to arrive sat morning and couldn't talk the aussie missus in going to Preston (I wonder why), but will be staying with me mate Ray in Coulby Newham and hopefully watching the game in the Smithy or at Rays house or whatever.
The good news is I will be at the Plymouth game with my lovely wife (wot the hell do you support Boro for they always lose in the last minute !!) and I havent been so excited since I stayed up at 2am in the morning drinking Carlton draught to watch us win the Carling Cup after I said to me mate with Foxtel I will drink a beer if Boro score a goal and once I started I couldnt stop.
Anyway if you cant tell I am a bit tipsy, and I reckon AV you should set up a facebook page for this blog so we can share photo's from Perth (are you Nige smog from downunder), Hong Kong, Dubai, Indianapolis etc. etc.
Gareth, wonderful bloke, wonderful captain, always welcome at the riverside.
The king is dead, long live the Ginger Whinger. !!!
UP THE BORO
**AV writes: Photos of you lot is exactly the kind of reason I have been resisting Facebook!
Was the sacking done at midnight so The Count could be there?
On a financial note there is an interesting article in the Grauniad about Liverpool. If they fail to qualify for the group stages of the Champions League and even worse, not qualify next year then they will be in serious financial problems servicing their debts.
Whilst on a different level those medium sized clubs who achieved a level of success by getting into Europe but do not stay there struggle with their finances. Boro, Blackburn, Bolton have all had a couple of seasons in europe then had problems. They just a few of the teams, Leeds are probably the biggest victims of too close to the sun syndrome.
Gibsons prudence is understandable but we still didnt get the best out of what we had. Southgate was the front man so carried the can but no one comes out of the affair with much credit.
Let us hope the new man can add something to the mix to get us back up. Often it is just a fresh pair of eyes that can make a difference. We think of Gate as being in position for three and a half years but he was the leader amongst the players before that so maybe he had been too long in the job and couldnt add any thing else to the club.
How close are we to 50,000?
And another thing, I thought I was an Untypical Boro red book holder? Do these Johnny come latelys get Eindhoven type preferencs over oldies like me?
Many more made their mind up when the drop was confirmed, when the new recruits failed to fire the imagination, or when the drab opener this term against Sheffield United
AV you and Uncle Eric ulogised at the time that the opener against the bench mark club of the championship was a good one, full of passion and commitment.
I thought it was a worrying performance of no creativity, which produced hardly a clear cut chance or shots for their keeper to save; a clear symmetry of the previous season. I was also very underwhelmed by the club that was touted by yourselves as the team to beat this season. They were garbage and we were worse.
The Gazette must look closely at its editorial policy during the recent Southgate management failures and ask was it too close, and consumed by the influence of the powers that be, obsequously following the club's policy of covering up of abject failure by the use of cynical, misguided spin and dumbing down that was intended to excuse and cover up for weak and failing management of the whole club.
There is a critique of Southgate's time in charge of Boro by Louise Taylor in the Guardian with an interesting conclusion:
"...he was, at times, simply a little too principled for his own good. And, surprisingly, maybe slightly too keen to surround himself with yes men. The irony is that his team of malleable youngsters badly lacked a feisty, articulate, senior pro, unafraid to play the barrack-room lawyer in front of the manager."
I was also wondering about the timing of the sacking (by-the-way I liked Ian's midnight Count theory) given it is now unlikely that we'll have the new man in charge for the Preston game. Was Gibson bounced into it a little earlier than he wished by results on Tuesday going our way, leaving him facing the politically damaging prospect of dismissing Southgate after going top next Saturday?
On the subject of photo's - I was thinking maybe you need two versions for your Blog header - the usual happy smiley picture and another where you look a bit glum. I sometimes find it a bit disconcerting to see you so happy after a bad defeat or even after sacking our manager.
**AV writes: Good point. Maybe I should have a non-descript expression but a moveable thumbs up/thumbs down feature
Thanks Forever Dormo!
I absolutely welcome Strachan with open arms.
He's got bags of experience. He's a disciplinarian who calls it as he see's it, you know exactly where you stand with him, he won't stand for any nonsense and he brings a great deal of exposure with him.
The exposure is a major plus for me as we desperately need him here to help regenerate the town's finances and bring in money for jobs etc. For me the success of the town goes in large part hand in hand with having a successful club at the heart of the community. So for me he brings loads of great and very helpful exposure and PR with him.
I personally don't think we could have expected anyone better. I for one wish him all the very best and hope that he will begin by clearing out the backroom staff.

I won some money so that was one disenchanted Derby fan. The general view was that if we couldnt beat Derby by more than 2-0 he deserved to get the sack.
They do look on us with a bit of envy but can understand the reasoning. They are astonished by the numbers of red seats. There is something about the way our ground is set out that makes it look a lot emptier than Pride Park with the same size crowd.
It is probably their corporate box lay out that takes whole swathes out of the main stand pushing fans to the rest of the ground. Our ground is nearly 2,000 to start with. Throw in the fact the seats are red and show up more and the picture is complete.
On the subject of fans hounding Gareth out. Dont underestimate the quality of product on offer (as it was for most of last season) and the debilitating effect of the remorseless slither into the championship. We had also had poor fare for at the Riverside for years before that, in part it had been masked by the UEFA Cup runs.
Onward and upward.
"...I'd have gone for Barabas"
What is it with Gibson and his picking Manchester United rejects to be managers,, eh! EHH!!!
Facebook entries and photos? That would probably be a horror show.
There are some important issues to be decided here:
1. When (or if) the announcement is made, who will post the first carefully reasoned call of "Strachan Out!"
2. Ian Gill, preference had traditionally been given to supporters with certain prefixes to their club Patron Number, but since this appears to have been missed off recent Season Cards (replaced by a more anonymous "Boro ID"?), the proprietors of this blog may have reverted to more arcane methods of distinction.
Looking like a Greek God helps, as does a regular "charitable donation". (Previous attempts to distinguish between supporters by looking at their supporting history failed - at the last count 35,000 claimed to have been at "the Charlton match" and over 40,000 at our "locked out" opener at Hartlepool)
3. Are we going to find a more upbeat nickname for our new manager (if he is to be confirmed) than the "Ginger Whinger"? I was rather hoping we might march on to Premiership glory in the next 6 months or so, and therefore something more positive might be appropriate.
4. In light of all the extra work needed in the last day or so, I expect it will be a Saturday off for AV and the lads at Gazette Towers. Fair's fair after all. Actually has anyone ever thought what it might be like to send the Political Correspondent, or the chap who covers the local councils to report on a match? How about the Political Correspondent running the post-match interviews?
Just imagine Paxman interviewing Sir Alex or Arsene Wenger about the knee-high assault by his defender as the opposing striker closed in on goal, but which the manager unfortunately just failed to see. Strange really as he claims to have had a better view than the linesman standing next to the incident, of a very close offside decision in the far corner of the pitch despite the position of about 15 intervening players. Specsavers must be producing special glasses for football managers.
5. Richard/AV and reference to the GS/GS initials and the cost cutting advantages of being able to reuse the training gear - costs will not be the only thing to be cut. At least six inches will have to be cut from the leg of each set of track suit bottoms or our new leader will disppear in a flurry of material.
Right, that's it. Back to work. For our contingent in Turku or Helsinki - forget education. It doesn't help if you are an unemployed seacoaler now that Redcar beach is so clean, and therefore have to ply your trade amongst the industrial heartland that is Teesside.
Hewing those parmos out of the sandstone of the Eston Hills is hard work. Horny handed sons of toil support the Boro! (So do some office workers).
No more recriminations and good luck to Gareth, we wish you the best of luck and success in the future.
But the line has now been drawn and we need to give the new GS unqualified support, until of course he screws up ! or does that count as a qualification ?
No matter, we need someone who will show some passion, gee the under performers up and give the young kids some guidance and Strachan for his faults, one of which is no can understand him, will show passion and bring some experience to the table and I think we need that badly but more importantly the fans can unite behind the team again.
Gordon Strachan has an excellent track record. The new GS was more successful at Celtic than Martin O'Neill ever was. And look the statics at Southampton (where are they now?) without much money.
Could anyone do a comparison between the track records of Strachan and O'Neill. Both managed at Celtic and the PL. I think So'ton finished higher than Leicester under these fellows. Anyone?
A safe and ambitious signing I'd say! Surprised that none one wanted O'Neill anymore :) UTB!
Is there any truth in the rumour that Strachan turned the offer of the job down initially, then changed his mind, perhaps accounting for the strange timing?
Tosh makes a good point, although I disagree with his assessment of the Gazette’s position and role.
By my reckoning, last year’s performances and relegation directly accounted for the first 5000 loss of regular attendees, including a downward step-change in goodness knows how many season ticket holders. However, some of those clearly gave it a chance in the first match of the season against Sheffield. Like me, many won’t have renewed, but will have attended on a match by match basis, but it’s also clear, in decreasing numbers.
Since the start of the season however, and contrary to the predictions of a few optimistic soothsayers about how great the season may be because we’ll be more competitive in this league, it’s become apparent that the Championship fare on offer at the Riverside has been dire, despite the (false) position Boro currently hold.
Gibson's assessment I believe is correct, in that Boro's better results have been against lower half opposition and we haven't really looked like we should be in a different league from anyone in this division.
We look like a modest Championship side. And for the most part, it's been awful to watch. I’m afraid I’m not on the bandwagon of opinion that claims we’ve got a great side that just needs better direction. I believe we have a modest, unbalanced, inexperienced squad, assembled on the cheap. And you can’t expect a Kia to perform like a Merc, even if driven by Jensen Button.
The lack of quality in the football fare on offer at the Riverside, of which results are a consequence and are, from the consumer’s perspective, an intrinsic part, is why the additional 5000 have progressively drifted away. Not necessarily and expressly because Gareth Southgate was manager. No doubt the anti-Southgate faction will claim causal linking, but personally, I’m not convinced.
I'm less than convinced that a change of manager will have a lasting beneficial effect, and it's even a possibility that there may be a dressing-room backlash against Strachan. The team is young, inexperienced, assembled in Southgate's time with relatively little money. Fragile egos may not be able to withstand a blunt or sarcastic Gordon Strachan. It’s a gamble and a “loose cannon” situation which is entirely of Steve Gibson’s creation when he decided, for business reasons (only really known to himself, but speculated about by many), to rein-in hard on costs.
The anti-Southgate faction is unlikely to rue his departure under any circumstances and probably expect instant returns. But unless Gibson starts backing the new manager with real money to upgrade the quality of the squad, any induced improvement in the football fare on offer is likely to prove temporary, as will be the return of the spectating "disappeared", some of whom MAY, out of curiosity and renewed hope, attend the first few matches of the new manager's tenure.
Only time will tell of course and should Premier League football be restored to the Riverside, I will of course, like most Boro supporters, be pleased. But I will never accept that Boro’s traumas of the two previous years were caused by Gareth Southgate. He has a Gibson stooge and ultimately is a victim in all of this. For a man and club servant of his stature, it’s a distasteful, unwarranted and heartbreaking end to his working relationship with the club.
It’s life. But it’s personal. And for me, it typifies some of the worst aspects of what football is and has become. If it caused Gibson pain and sleepless nights, then it should and I’m glad! I have no sympathy. He brought it upon himself and I’m not interested in how bad he feels about it. He is typical of the power brokers who often get things wrong, but always somehow survive, leaving many others traumatized in their wake.
I never expected to be siding strongly with Tony Black, but Tony’s posts on Southgate’s departure have shown him to be a man of principle, with a real sense of what is correct – not expedient. And that, in my opinion, is an admirable quality.
So if we get Strachan perhaps he can bring the Egyptians back into the fold? Can we recall Mido AV? Do you know any of the details of his loan deal? How many years are left on his contract? He would get goals in this league. Mendieta on a pay as you play... Perhaps that is a bit too far.
UTB

Come on Boro! Foam hands at the ready! Champions League winners 11/12....
Re- comments about players not being able to understand Gordon Stachan.
I wonder if the Count will consider re-hiring the club's interpreter after their dismissal by him a short time ago? Possibly they though him an "expensive luxury" (despite Digard, Emnes and others not being able to speak English well if at all.)
Well if the players couldn't understand Gareth, what chance will they have at comprehending one of Flash Gordons highland rants?
Josh Walker?
Rings a bell, no cant place him. Is he related to Private Walker off Dad's Army?
It's amazing to see the 'anti' Strachan brigade starting to form, its beyond belief in fact. He strikes me as being a better appointment than most names touted about and as Boro manager he will have my full support.
As others have said his interviews should be good value, but I think AV and colleagues will need their tin hats and flak jackets at the ready!
We have a squad good enough to finish in the top two, hopefully a new man in charge will have a galvanising influence and remove the negative atmosphere from the home fans which has clearly debilitated the Boro players.
Forever Dormo - No I cant be nice to TB - but I can ignore him.
Back to the messiah idea. Sue Watson could decalare 'He's not the Messiah, He's a very naughty boy'

Arcane?, Arcane? Stuff arcane, what about longevity.

I have googled Josh Walker. Apparently he is a talented midfielder and captain of the England U20 side.
Maybe the new boss could get him on loan because he doesnt seem to feature in league matches. That would be a real scoop, his first signing.
What do you think?
**Av writes: The new GS will probably know all about these obscure youngsters who have done it in Scotland, played in Europe for Caledonian sides etc.
AV
Have you heard the rumours of new investment coming into the club and they were insisting Southgate was replaced and Strachan was their prefered choice?
I'm happy that Southgate has gone as I don't believe he should have been given the job in the first place, regardless of the cost cutting plans etc when McClaren left we could have still got a manager with some experience that would have worked under such constraints.
Strachan is the type of manager that the club needs and I even if we lose a game his post match comments to the press will be a joy to watch.
I'm quite happy with the prospective appointment of Strachan.I think his record at Coventry Southampton and Celtic is as good as any other names that have been bandied about as being preferable[Curbs and Coppell].
He has a wealth of experience and a majority of fans of his former clubs seem to think highly of him. That will do for me.
I dont expect miracles.Commitment, sensible team selections and rational substitutions and decent judgement of players will do nicely.
I had to laugh when I saw Souness's name mentioned. To suggest somebody who virtually trashed a good team at Newcastle in his last job has got to be a joke.
Whilst I don’t like the thought of Gibbo going behind Southgate’s back, I am fully behind him in his pursuit of Strachan.
With it emerging that the defeat against Leicester may well have been the tipping point, I wonder when contact with Strachan was made. Reading the Noel Whelan’s interview, Strachan was at the Coventry game and I wonder if Gibbo was there and the initial contact was made.
Good to see Coops given the reigns for the game at Deepdale. I’ll be there hopefully to see Boro’s most successful ever manager. Played one, won one. 100%
As said earlier by others I think its time we reunite and get right behind Strachan. Of course there will be some who wished for another manager but lets give him a fair crack of the whip. Whilst complaints, gripes and infighting may make a good web based forum. It has lead to a terrible atmosphere at home games.
My fave Strachan quotes
‘Death is the solution to all problems. No man - no problem.’ I prefer Bob Marley’s take on this one.
‘China is a big country, inhabited by many Chinese. ‘ Can’t argue with that
‘I have a dream that one day even the town of Middlesbrough, a town sweltering with the heat of football, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice and Champions league football. ‘
Wee Gordon Strachan, man of the people.
Come on Boro
I guess it's all been said now and difficult to add anything fresh. Now that the dust has settled a bit and in reflective mood, like many (perhaps even the silent majority)I'm left with mixed feelings about the situation.
Again like many, I really liked Gareth, both as a man of integrity and as an excellent Boro player and great captain. He was articulate and literate, particularly rare qualities in those who make their living out of playing and managing the game. As such, I'm really sorry that the experiment didn't work out finally.
That said, in the harsh reality of the professional game when it's nearly all about results or at the least playing good attractive football, it is clear that Gareth couldn't really do it and had to go, if the club was to have a real chance of promotion this year, which of course has to be the new GS's sole aim and focus.
However, given Steve Gibson's rationale for dismissing Gareth at this time, surely the same view should have been taken last season, in fact more so I think.
Hindsight is a great thing as we all know, and of course, views and ideas about the game and players is subjective. Eg.I don't rate Tony McMahon as a fullback, many others think he's excellent. However, surely anyone who followed the premiership, even on tv could tell that the club got into a state of freefall and that by the turn of the year, relegation was more likey than not. or at best was going to be fought over and lost by three teams out of five.
As such, and being very negative,it's a truism to say that in appointing Gareth to the post of manager Steve Gibson made the biggest mistake in his tenure of Middlesbrough football club and perhaps he should at least acknowledge this.
Looking back therefoe over the last two and a bit seasons, I think it's true to say What a waste of a period, that might otherwise have been used to move the club on, albeit on a more sustainable level.
With regard to Gordon Strachan, although I have certain reservations about his worth as a manager, he is a strong personality, doesn't suffers fools gladly and knows the game. Good luck to him.
Great news if it is to be Strachan. think it is pretty nailed on by all opinions. We needed an experienced head this time around and we will certainly get that with Strachan. He has had a good break after leaving celtic so should be recharged and ready to go.
AV, any idea how many days he will be at the training ground etc.... is he like an O'Neill a few days a week and then turns up for games etc....?
I for one will be going back to our home games, i went to the leicester game and vowed never to return under Southgate it was appalling.
Strachan is a good manager and has what it takes to get us back up, I wonder though if he will be given funds in january as it was reported on sky news yesterday by some pathetic LMA adviser we had £25m to spend in the summer.?
If it is Strachan he must be rubbing his hands, what he will walk into is a team 1 point off the top with one of the youngest squads in the country, cash to spend and a club and fan base united behind him.
Im not getting too excited but i like the prospect of strachan and all that he brings.
COME ON BORO!!!!!!!
**AV writes: If we go up our revenue wikll increase by about £25m. How much of that would be available to spend is another thing entirely.
This is Strachan-tastic! Brace yourself Teesside for the greatest interviews ever. Samples below
Gordon Strachan on Wayne Rooney : "It's an incredible rise to stardom, at 17 you're more likely to get a call from Michael Jackson than Sven Goran Eriksson!"
Reporter: Gordon, Do you think James Beattie deserves to be in the England squad?
Strachan: I dont care, I'm Scottish !
Reporter: "Gordon, can we have a quick word please?"
Strachan: "Velocity" [walks off !!!]
Reporter: Welcome to Southampton Football Club. Do you think you are the right man to turn things around?
Strachan: No. I was asked if I thought I was the right man for the job and I said, "No, I think they should have got George Graham because I'm useless."
Reporter: Is that your best start to a season?
Strachan: Well I've still got a job so it's far better than the Coventry one, that's for sure.
Reporter: Are you getting where you want to be with this team?
Strachan: We're not doing bad. What do you expect us to be like? We were eighth in the league last year, in the cup final and we got into Europe. I don't know where you expect me to get to. Do you expect us to win the Champions League?
Reporter: Gordon, you must be delighted with that result?
Strachan: You're spot on! You can read me like a book.
Strachan: I've got more important things to think about. I've got a yogurt to finish by today, the expiry date is today. That can be my priority rather than Agustin Delgado.
Reporter: This might sound like a daft question, but you'll be happy to get your first win under your belt, won't you?
Strachan: You're right. It is a daft question. I'm not even going to bother answering that one. It is a daft question, you're spot on there.
Reporter: Bang, there goes your unbeaten run. Can you take it?
Strachan: No, I'm just going to crumble like a wreck. I'll go home, become an alcoholic and maybe jump off a bridge. Umm, I think I can take it, yeah.
Reporter: So Gordon, any changes then ?
Strachan: Naw, still 5ft 6, ginger hair, and a big nose !
Reporter: There's no negative vibes or negative feelings here?
Strachan: Apart from yourself, we're all quite positive round here. I'm going to whack you over the head with a big stick, down negative man, down.
Reporter: Where will Marion Pahars fit into the team line-up?
Strachan: Not telling you! It's a secret.
Reporter: You don't take losing lightly, do you Gordon?
Strachan: I don't take stupid comments lightly either.
Reporter: So, Gordon, in what areas do you think Middlesbrough were better than you today?
Strachan: What areas? Mainly that big green one out there................
Reporter: So, Gordon, any plans for Europe this year ?
Strachan: Aye, me and the wife quite fancy Spain in August
Well done Steve Gibson.
Gareth Southgate - a perfect gentleman but could not manage experienced players. Look around the Premiership for players who should still be at the club - Woodgate, Cattermole, Yakubu, Schwarzer, Downing and others.
If it is to be GS II, sorting out Jinky's position has to be near the top of his immediate "to do" list. Let's hope he has the necessary diplomatic & negotiating skills to persuade the lad to sign a new contract ASAP.
According to today's "Sun" (report linked on the Beeb site), Steve Bruce will come in for him during the January transfer window. The bloody Mackems mustn't be allowed to have him as well as Catts! I'm not a religious woman, but... *prays*
Stewart Flaherty:
LOL :D. Priceless. If that sort of entertainment comes to the Riverside, I might even renew my season ticket! Thanks for compiling that! Just what we needed after a traumatic couple of days!
Well, Gareth has gone and it seems Gordon Strachan is to be his replacement.
Teesside is an area that has experienced more than its fair share of unemployment, so many can sympathise with GS. I admit of course that he will hardly have to go down to the dole office and throw himself at the mercy of the little Hitlers that are employed there. He was well payed and will no doubt be financially secure with his contract paid up.
However, the way that it was done leaves a bad taste in the mouth. I know there is no room for sentiment in football, but surely there has to be some integrity. Alleged back door meetings, midnight phone calls and a late night sacking. This is not what we expect from honourable people.
Steve Gibson prides himself as being a straight speaking Boro lad, Gareth could be forgiven for expecting some of that straight talk. In all of his dealings with the media and the fans GS never once hid away. I think he deserved better. It's true nice guys finish last.
So now we begin a new era at MFC. Hopefully the new manager will be able to bring in some new players, it is patently obvious that the present squad are not good enough, and lacking in many areas of the pitch.
Hopefully all supporters of the club can draw a line under this episode of our history and support the new management as they strive to move us forward. Only time will tell if the right decision has been made.
I think it's fair to say that the timing of Southgate's sacking came as a surprise to everyone and has probably been more of a debating point than the sacking itself.
Having had a day or so to reflect on it and accepting that it has happened, I think Steve Gibson's timing is right and understandable, for the following reasons:
With more than 25% of the season already gone and with Boro performances now benchmarked in Championship terms, Gibson knows that if he's serious about taking Boro back into the Premier League next season, he needs to do something really positive to drive performances up.
Leaving it later increases the risk - witness the slide last season and our inability to strengthen the midfield in the January window. Gibson learned from that and has decided to take earlier action, so that.....
if the new manager identifies weaknesses in the squad and wants to buy to strengthen, he'll have time to get his ducks in a row for January. Any later and we'd be in a similar position to last season, being thwarted in attempts to do so and running out of time.
He needs to send a positive message by way of hard evidence to try to stop the rot of dwindling crowds as soon as possible.
On this occasion, I'm inclined to believe Gibson, because IF your going to do something, then DO IT before it's too late.
However, I'm still of the belief that the squad is too weak and some fire and experience will have to be brought in, with up front and midfield being prime candidate positions. (Defensively, with Pogatetz coming back and if Chris Riggott makes an appearance anytime in the next month or so, we should have sufficient cover at the back.)
The aim has to be to bring in some quality in those key positions that will transend the Championship challenge and be settled in the squad in preparation for next season in the Premier League.
To do THAT however, will mean Gibson getting his plastic out in January. Anything short of that, and I shall remain sceptical. Hopeful, but sceptical.
I find it absolutely incredible that people can be against Strachan. His CV is very good indeed, and he is well known for being a no nonsnense, straight talking guy.
On top of that, unless by bringing him in we have brought in other money, we have no money and we have a squad that is paper thin and not all that good to be totally honest.
I really don't know what more people could want.
I am very excited by this appointment and can't wait to see where it leads.
We are one point off the top spot and despite Southagte being really rubbish in the Premiership, he at least deserves a great deal of credit for where we are now.
If this sacking was at any other club you would expect it to be as a result of the club being way off the pace. As it happens, we sacked our manager just as things were going well when we should have sacked him yonks ago. Go figure. It all smells very bad to me and really does enforce the view that things aren't right at this club at the highest level.
I just wish Steve Gibson would go as well, as his time has come and gone and we really do need someone who can take us to the next level. Steve Gibson just seems to want to cling on no matter what. I personally find the man arrogant and with a God complex.
I'm not anti anyone, but it just seems to me that the time has come to say a very, very, very big thank you and goodbye to Mr Gibson. We need to kick on and we need to find people who can make the right call at the right time, and sadly, Steve Gibson hasn't done that since Eindhoven and many, many people know it.
People in here can hate me all they want. I am one of those people where sentiment just doesn't come into play. My sole interest is that of this football club and where I think people have outlived there usefulness I say so and look for people who can do more and take us onto bigger and better things.
It isn't personal. It's just a desire to go back to Eindhoven and relive what was a magical part of my life, that's all. Yes, that was all down to Gibson, but that was then and this is now and I just can't see him being able to do it again.
Steve Gibson should be given a Knighthood for his services to football and to the regeneration of Middlesbrough. He is and always will be a legend. But all legends have their day, and his day ended long ago in my book.
TB
I suspect that Mr Gibson will have kept a little spare money in his back pocket, not having wanted to give it all to Gareth to spend as he must have had it in the back of his mind that he would possibly end up handing over the old P45. I am not saying LOTS of money, but maybe a few millions to try to get a midfielder and/or a striker to make promotion more likely.
It is possible the new manager just might not fancy some of the players on our books (and therefore might want to sell, to raise a bit of cash). Also the spectre of a red and white striped Adam Johnson in January might give rise to SOME money coming in (though we'd obviously be better off keeping him as in this division he has proved he is the most likely both to score and to make goals - and goals make prizes AV).
If some money has been kept back, and if it is added to in January, it might be the case that our new manager will have a modest amount of money to spend then. It is difficult to imagine his coming here on the basis of a plan that said "One or two might go out, but you can't buy anyone for the rest of this season, though if you can organise a loanee whose wages aren't too high that might be OK".
Anyway it's late so get to sleep, you lot. (Or at least help me work out why my body is working on Los Angeles time. Maybe it's all that hard work hewing away at the parmo mine?).
I think the timing of Gareths sacking was not of Steve Gibsons doing. Propably Strachans deal was not nailed to the wall after the Watford game so nothing could happen.
As for the future some attacking coaching seems to be coming in if the Sun is to be believed. Dont think Ali will be a Boro player after Jan as he didnt get a look in at Celtic under the new boss. Which opens the door for another striker. Folan - feel sorry for the guy but he should go back as we need somebody now.
The timing was nearly right, Sunday/Monday would not have raised an eyebrow. There was nothing wrong with the staging in terms of the historic results. We had already debated about the top/bottom results and that was the logic taken and it is difficult to argue against.
From a club perspective they probably didn't want to rock the boat before a home match. A draw or defeat against Derby wouldn't have harmed their case, a win didn't help it. The crowd was a big plus for the argument, in my view it is the shocking performances that have driven fans away. Take away the big followings of Sheff U and the Baggies and the crowds are below 20,000
A win at Preston would have made it extremely hard for them.
Rock and a hard place spring to mind, easier in the premiership with big gaps in the programme. The damage to Gibbo is already done, it will be stored away and used in evidence in typical Teesside fashion.
You also need to factor in the hours of darkness for the Count, wonder where his coffin is kept? I wonder if the lid creaked as Gate sat down?
What I do wonder is that, if David Craig was telling the truth and knew on the Monday, the NOTW were running the story, did the Gazette have a sense of what was going on? It is entirely possible that the answer could be no, maybe or yes.
It is entirely logical that journalists well out of the area may have picked up some clues not even by leaks. Maybe spotted Strachan deep in converstation with somebody, or overheard a conversation. Things that only the network of national journalists would pick up.
Our local journalists might sensed something but have no substance so kept schtum rather than cause mischief. This medium is for debating and we have discussed the situation for some time. The vast majority had no malice whatsoever. You didnt need to be a rocket scientist to guess that there must be some internal debate.
The third possibility is that someone within Gazette Towers knew the score. I doubt we will ever find out if that was the case. I suspect not, the alternative above seems more likely with some sense of disquiet that was non attributable.
AV
Setting apart the conspiracy theories, do the journalists outside of Planet Boro sometimes pick up information that you don't. I am not being insulting here. We have all experienced the new eyes syndrome where someone form 'outside' sees things differntly. In fact, as Gate had been here 8+ years he was possibly too immersed in the club, he was very much the manager amongst the players whilst still one of them. People like Wenger and Ferguson are freaks with their longevity.
**AV writes: You may want to reread my blog from Tuesday setting out the stakes of the Derby game (or indeed the first paragraphs of the live blog) to consider whether the Gazette knew change was on the agenda.
I doubt if journos outside get to hear stories that we don't. We all hear the rumours. The press room is a real tittle-tattle fish wives bitch fest - although I do think they are more likely to go to print with half-formed rumours that we wouldn't (we would always go to the club, either the manager or higher up first and we have to think about the political and diplomatic implications if the story is wrong.)
The Strachan story was clearly 'out' in some senses. It is possible people who know him in the game, or those close to his agents, or people close to those in the know at the club had leaked it. We were first told about it weeks ago, maybe after Bristol, certainly well back. We were also told Curbishley was nailed on when his money from West Ham ran out on November 1st. But so often these "nailed on" are simply wrong. A lot of it is just wishful thinking.
But there was definietly a rabbit off on Tuesday. The press room was heaving for the first time this season because all the national lads were there and that only happenes because they think there is a story. They had all left by 11pm when it started to become clear something funny was happening.
Good argument there, Richard. It makes sense why so little happened last January and why Gibbo acted now.
By the way, Viv Andersson talked about the managerial change to BBC. So far the best summary of the new GS at
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/m/middlesbrough/8321265.stm
Up the Boro!
Sean St Ledger has commented on the departure of Southgate and has said he's now a bit worried about his position and that GS was the main reason he came to Boro since he was hoping to learn from a former England centre-half.
He said "It was a major shock to all the lads. We are one point off the top and Gareth was very well liked"
Whilst all that is understandable, what I find quite revealing is that he calls Southgate 'Gareth' - perhaps the relationship between player and manager shouldn't be so 'matey' if you want to keep them on their toes - can't imagine Rooney saying 'we all get on great with Alex'.
Great - well over 3 000 Boro fans traveling to Preston! They usually have some 12 to 13 000 spectators over there. So now perhaps 15 000. So it means around 20 % of the fans are Boro supporters. Must be great atmosphere!
AV, do you give us who are not able to be there :( a live 'commentary' again? Please!
Secondly, have Uncle Eric or you already got an invitation to a press conference to be held today? Just for curiosity....
Up the Boro!
**AV writes: Yes, I will be live blogging. No, there is no presser planned for today.
Richard
I do not believe that any manager will take the Boro job without been guaranteed money to spend in January. The new boss will want to bring in some new faces of his own.
If the Boro can still be challenging for promotion come the end of December I think we will have a stonger team by the end of January.
C'Mon Boro!
Tony Black
If you got your wish and Gibson leaves, who do you expect to buy the club?
Strachan is pap and Boro are nailed on certainties to be wallowing around in mid table of the championship for many more years to come.
The live blogging feedback got lost in the events.
Invaluable for us far, far away.Glad it's going to happen.
I will set my reminder.
What time zine is Proud Preston in again?
Put bluntly, Southgate should NEVER have been made manager in the first place. That much is clear. His otherwise impeccable record with Boro has been blemished by this ill-advised jaunt into taking on a job he clearly wasn't up to. This is all Gibbo's fault and it's obviously backfired - except it took too damn long for the blatantly obvious to show itself in his eyes.
As for Strachan being the replacement. I say bring it on! Either he or Curbishley would have been my ideal choices. So maybe there is hope on the horizon after all. After so many sterile performances and results of late (notice how the impressive clean sheet run we had suddenly dried up the moment Huthy left for Stoke anyone??), it's time for things to look up again.
I for one am now quietly and cautiously optimistic that the wee Scot can demonstrate why he has been such a fiery, enigmatic and passionate little bugger all these years!
AV
You may have confused readers by putting your comment in before the end of my post. My piece was more a comment on the situation and a few thoughts that passed through my head. All with that most valuable tool of hindsight.
Clearly there was debate going, you wouldnt expect anything else. There is no doubt many were concerned with the situation that existed at the club.
Listening to the Coops interview after I posted it appears the club have kept a lid on the proceedings fairly well.
For those who criticise MFC and its handling of this affair, it must be very difficult to do it properly and that presupposes there is a right way. Think back to the shenanigans at Spurs over Martin Jol. That was a shocker in bungled PR.
Whatever was done at MFC appears to have been thought through. Whether you agree with the decision or its timing is another matter. I dont think it was a knee jerk reaction, many would think it took too long to happen.
There is still a huge Parmo Army on the way to Preston. Lets hope we can get he same passion at the Riverside.
I said before the game on here that despite Gibson's blind loyalty that falling attendances would force his hand and it did.
I'm excited about a new manager and a character at that. I think the club has been crying out for an 'experienced' manager for some time now. To a degree I think the potential that lies within this club has been squandered so far.
Strachan's CV doesn't excite me, but if he puts square pegs in square holes and if his leadership style is took on-board by all the players, it could work wonders. We are 4th and that was with a flagging manager, questionable tactics and an uneasy crowd, now we have someone that will naturally polarise the club which will help us to gain momentum.
Newcastle however, are on a blip and are about to appoint the caretaker manager, WBA have an inexperienced manager and are in a blip and NO WAY are they 5-0 better than us.
Strachan will inherit easily the best youth policy/set-up outside the top 4 of the PL and one of the best in the world. There are some quality young players here and maybe as a famous Scotsman once said you won't win anything with kids and a Scotsman went on to win many things with kids, perhaps our Scotsman will do something similar. I for one am looking forward to his press conferences.
Come on Boro and welcome Gordon.
So as an exiled Boro Boy in Lancs I get to go to my first game this season and what has Mr Gibson laid on for me? Only a brand new manager and hopefully a team of players desperate to impress the Ginger one! (I'm assuming he'll be there).
I undersatnd from one of my North End supporting staff that they have been pretty poor lately, that St Ledger was by far their best player, but that they are still very solid at the back but don't look like scoring very often Looks like a nailed on 0-0 to me!
He also says there's a lot of discontent around at Deepdale, that they're underfunded to challenge for Premiership footie and terrified that Blackpool might go up, leaving them in a Championship desert with no local derby games.
I'd really like a win please - even a scrappy one.
My name is Scoredraw and I'm stunned:
As someone who is a 'footballing bigamist' I have a place in my heart for both the Boro and the Bhoys.
I always felt Gordon was a better manager than Martin O'Neil and 'the tic' seemed to play better football under him - he bought well and with a bit of luck can tempt Scott Brown to join him next year.
On a personal level Gordon is exactly the type of character we need to 'stick up' for the Boro. His personal pride is such that he will not allow his club and team to be treated with contempt.
At least my blue eyed boy 'Tony MacMahon' will get a fair crack of the whip because Gordon is not a moron.
If anyone has read his articles in the Observer they'll realise that behind the quips and 'one liners' there's a thinker who knows his football.
Assuming it all goes through - Good luck Gordon and welcome to Teesside - It can be a little wild and 'unruly' (Englands 'little Afghanistan') but as many foreigners will testify Venables, Mendiata, Juninho, Mustoe, Ravanelli the people are warm, long-suffering and generally soft hearted.
Hello Vic.
First things first, I'm all for the appointment of Strachan if it is to go ahead. I just wish, if they are to appoint him, the board would hurry up and do so:
"Strachan is expected to travel up from his Hampshire home on Sunday night or Monday morning to sign on the dotted line."
I seem to recall that Roy Keane agreed a deal and was ready to sign a contract at Blackburn in '93, on a Friday, before being told the office staff had left for the weekend and he could sign it the following Monday. So - basically he'd agreed a deal, but signed nothing. Ferguson spotted this, pounced like a tiger, and you know what happened next. Didn't Steve Bruce do something similar to us regarding Ben Watson?
That, and they're still linking Alan Irvine with the manager's post. So I'll not be accepting the new GS as "one of us" until he signs, full stop.
Also, I'd like to point out that while Gareth just wasn't up to it in the long run, he was the victim of the increasing expectations that arrived with the Boro Boom of the mid '90's. What do we, as fans, really want: good football and a full ground every week, or trophies, acclaim and European football?
We'll never get all of those things, and you know it. Results are the priority at the moment, and a good, experienced motivator - like Strachan - might just help more than a little bit.
Read my extended thoughts on our current situation if you like at this link here:

What is the 48 hour delay about?
We are not going to get a 94th minute Typical Boro moment are we?

Thanks for the insight into the press side, you wonder how it all works especially as a big story breaks. I had wondered if the journos were all in it together or if you only shared info amongst various cliques.
There are obviously limitations on what you can publish due to he fact you have to deal with the people afterwards never mind being sued or, even worse, barred from the food at half time.
You have certainly shed some light on what took place, thanks for that.
**AV writes: You only share information that you know other people already know, or know they can't make stand up without another vital piece of the jigsaw you have hidden in your pocket and have no intention of showing, or that they wouldn't dare print (there is a lot of that last category). It is a bit like the poker and double-bluffs of the Cold War intelligence game.
Good news about the following to Preston of 3,000+. I wonder how close the Plymouth home crowd would have been to that had Derby beat us and Gareth stayed?
AV, do you know how many of the 3,000 tickets were sold after the sacking? This could signal a large home crowd on the way for the Plymouth game as the refuseniks return!

I saw a lot of Strachans Southampton team and I would say that I was very impressed with what he achieved. The club had very little money and what he did have he spent pretty well. The team were very fit and organised, with a reputation for scoring late goals. The work rate was outstanding, and the 'sum of the whole' was undoubtedly greater than the 'sum of the parts'.
He walked when Rupert Lowe insisted on becoming involved on the playing side. He doesn't stand any nonesense and the fans here would have him back tomorrow.
Lester Fox, this is a Boro board; no-one cares what you think.
BBB, I think they don't want to disturb the players too much. Tomorrow's match could just go around the new GS and his opinions if he'd been unveiled in a hurry. Instead it should all be about Coops and his players. I even read somewhere that only his assistant Garry Pendrey is attending the match. So low profile until Monday.
So let's concentrate on the match on Saturday and look forward to Monday, later. Up the Boro!
"Scoredraw said: My name is Scoredraw and...welcome to Teesside - It can be a little wild and 'unruly' (England's 'Little Afghanistan'), but as many foreigners will testify...".
Are you for real, or what?!
So are all the faint-hearts and part-timers who bailed out on Boro supposedly because of Southgate all going to be back for the Plymouth game then? Are the so called diehards going to come back and show the pride and passion they said that Southgate had personally killed?
Or will these sanctimonious 'principled' political exiles now all find a new excuse to stay away now? My money is on the latter.
Now they will all move the goalposts and say 'Strachan isn't the right man' or 'he has onlt had success in a minor league' or 'if they had ambition they'd have gone for Curbs/Sven/Mourinho' or 'I'll wait to see who he buys in January' or 'I'll only go back if they get promoted'
The bottom line is that all these weak people who walked away were just using Southgate or Gibson's lack of cash as an excuse when really they were just plastic Premiership post-Juninho bandwagonners who couldn't face up to a few years without buying success. God knows how they would have coped in the early 80s.
If these so called supporters were all telling the truth about their reasons for staying away then I expect a sell out for Plymouth. My guess is most will still be in the pub bad-mouthing Strachan and Gibson and predicting doom.

It is a cross between poker AND WHAT? I won't be able to get to sleep tonight till I know...
**AV writes: Well readers, what do you think? Let's make it a competition. Answer during the live blog at Preston tomorrow.
How about this for a stab at the reason behind the 48 hour delay:
We’re in Steve Gibson’s office. Steve Gibson and Keith Lamb are present.
SG’s Secretary: “Mr Gibson, I have Colin Cooper on the line as you requested”
SG: “Thanks.” Picks phone up:- “Colin, Steve Gibson here. How’re things – OK? That’s good!”
“Listen Colin, with Gareth’s departure at short notice, there’s a little something I’d like you to do for me, if you think you can handle it?
CC: “Sure thing Mr Chairman. No problem - you know you can rely on me.”
SG: “Yes I know Colin, you’ve been with us a long time now and you know how we work. Colin, how would you like to step up to be caretaker manager for the Preston match? You know, with Gareth going off to spend more time with his family, it would only be fair to support the lads as best we can, in the circumstances, over at Deepdale. It isn’t fair for them not to have a recognised designated authoritative presence on their travels.
They need someone they can look up to and respect. Someone to offer guidance and support and to help them bring back those three points! I can think of nobody better for the job, Colin. How about it? Are you up for it. You and Aggers to bring back the bacon! Eh? Colin?”
CC: “Of course, Steve,……..erm,….Mr Chairman. I’m flattered that you have faith in me to look after the lads.”
SG: “Good man, Colin! I knew I could depend on you to step up to the plate! I’m counting on you to prove me right and bring us back those three points!”
CC: “We’ll do our best, Mr Chairman! Thanks for the opportunity!”
Click
KL: “Has he gone?”
CC: “Yep – he’s hung up. Right Keith, phone Gordon & tell him we’re OK for the weekend, but just make sure that he gets his lads, Garry Pendrey and Neil Lennon here for Monday’s Press Conference, because by Saturday midnight, Coops and Aggers are history!”
KL: “But what if we win?”
SG: “What difference does that make?
KL: "What do we tell Coops and Aggers?"
SG: "We'll tell them they're sacked of course! What else would you tell them? Listen Keith, The little Jock Ginger Nut's refusing to come unless he gets his own people around him, right? Well that Vickers guy on the gazette blew the gaff even before the phone went down last week and now the whole of Teesside, (except fo Stockton of course) is expecting me to deliver him as the Boro Messiah. So, I need his signature on that contract! And he won't sign unless he gets his own guys in!"
KL: "I know all that. It's just that Coops and Aggers, well, they deserve to be treated the Boro way!"
SG: Exactly, Keith! What a short memory you're developing!"
AV - Thank you for telling me when to post for the 35,000 I'll give you a tenner when we win the FA Cup!!
I really hope Southgate going is just the kick up the backside MFC needed and we can now be as one and unite.
C'mon Boro!

TeesExile:
That's a very narrow view of the world you have there! Are you drunk?
I imagine that these "weak people" to whom you refer have a quite different and perfectly valid set of values to yours.
Dare I even suggest that these "sanctimonious principled political exiles" may actually be a bit more discriminating in what they pay for - as is their absolute right?
Dare I suggest the possibility that many of these "plastic Premiership post-Juninho bandwagonners" may have stretched themselves financially, but thought it was worth it to bring their kids to Premier League football, but in view of the Championship dross and the recession, there might just be other things they could find to do with their money, like eat and put heat into their houses?
Or maybe TeesExile, irrespective of where YOU are domiciled, their world is perhaps a bit bigger than yours and they have a life outside of football?
Finally TeesExile, I think you might find yourself at variance with Steve Gibson, who is clearly quite keen to welcome back the weak-willed, lily-livered, rainy-day stayaways that at least equal and probably exceed by a significant margin, those who attend irrespective of what crap gets served up.
And before you cast me, or anyone else, in the same mold, just because I defend people's rights to make their own choices according to personal circumstances or proclivities, doesn't necessarily put me in either camp. Although I haven't renewed MY season ticket, I've only missed one match this season, because of family commitments. But I suppose that may not be allowed either in your world!
And that's despite my criticisms of the manner in which I believe Steve Gibson has managed the club and treated the supporters over the past three or four years.
Nobody can tell you who or what to like or dislike, but a little tolerance and open-mindedness wouldn't go amiss. Particularly when the people you denegrate would prefer to support (a better) Boro rather than abscond to be glory-hunting, remote supporters of Manchester United or Liverpool!
Chris Marton:
It was meant as a joke, a reference to his supposed reluctance to come to Teesside. You humourless .... You are clearly one of these people primed permanantly looking for offence.
Lighten up, sorry if I dragged Marton's name through the smog it being such an idyll.
" sick as a parott said:
Tony Black, If you got your wish and Gibson leaves, who do you expect to buy the club? "
I'm not saying it would be easy, and any prospective buyer does bring an element of risk. Newcastle are a prime example.
The problem we have now is that Steve Gibson has taken the club as far as he can, in my opinion, and I think it's fair to say that most people would say that post Eindhoven that he has not done a good job. Add to that that we have sold most of our player assets and that we have a thin squad and it is very hard to imagine how we will ever be able to sustain life in the Premiership, never mind attempt to nick a trophy or a European spot.
I would like the club to be bought by anyone with lots of money, part shady or not as in the modern game it's the only way to survive. That isn't to say that someone would buy.
For me, football is about at least attempting to win, as opposed to simply attempting to exist which is what I feel Gibsons objective has been for some time.
Yes, of course for the type and size of club we are it was a great achievement to be in the Premiership and to stay in it, but then when we didn't kick on and just accepted the status quo under the guise of, " we're just a small town in Europe ", and I personally feel that it was this lack of ambition that cost us in the end and it is why we are where we are now.
I have never agreed with the so called, " model " that AV is such a big fan of. For me the model must always be to try to do better.
Steve Gibson has made many mistakes.
He hired Southgate.
He gave him a ludicrous and unheard of 5 year deal for a rookie manager.
He opted for, " continuity " in the backroom staff.
He stuck by Southgate through thick and thin and didn't even attempt to bring in some outside help when he could have done to save us from the drop.
He kept him in the job at the start of this season and he continuously backed him all the way.
He then sacks him when he was doing well when he should have sacked him as he wacthed him blowing his hard earned and remaining money on some truly horrendous players.
He then has the gall to claim that he will still one day be the next England manager.
This is not forgetting all the insults along the way that the fans have had to listen and endure to by his right hand man who should have been given the bullet for being so insulting.
How anyone can defend Steve Gibson post Eindhoven really is beyond me.
TB
Stewart Flaherty.
Shame on you for self promotion. I wouldnt stoop to telling anyone if I had a column in the same publication. (subtle cough, tricky with tongue in cheek)
As for tickets I believe we sold out our intial tranche of 2000+ before the night of the living dead. We got another 900'sh and they were selling well early in the week.
The atmosphere is brilliant amongst the away fans and there are new grounds to see even for a fan from the early sixties like myself.
A lot of those are regulars at the Riverside and would provide the same atmosphere if the fare was better. I wasn't at the Derby match but the atmosphere in the three previous matches was poor. It reflected what was happening on the pitch.
As I mentioned in an earlier post the Red Faction couldn't get a response from the New Holgate End with the red army chant.
The football over recent seasons, even league matches during Mac's tenure at the Riverside, has gradually sucked the life out of the fans.
The problem in rebuilding the fan base is that once fans stop enjoying the match they find other things to do. They remain Boro fans but lose the need for the fix of live football. Attracting them back in previous numbers may prove tricky and take a little time.
Chris Marton (under Milkwood):
Apologies for all the disparaging remarks and jokes about Teesside. I'd forgotten about the arcadian delights of Marton, Captain Cook, quiz night at the Bluebell ?
You'll have to forgive me, we don't all live minutes from the rolling North Yorkshire countryside and only a matter of miles from somewhere nicer.
I forgot myself for a moment it won't happen again (unless I'm bored).
Don't worry I don't think Gordon will move in next door.
AV. Is the delay because Gordon wants his own men and that means Coops and Aggers are dead men walking too? So minimum disruption before the Preston six pointer then the new team in for the big home game v plymouth. Go on tell me I'm wrong. No pressure on you but I'll be live tonight with you and Radio Brownlee through some dodgy feed also watching via iraqi tv!
**AV writes: I think it is partly because of the complexity of legal documents these days and partly because coming in cold would give little time to prepare for Preston. Initially GS was going to be at Preston but that may be in doubt now although we expect Garry Pendry there taking notes.
If the Second Coming happened in Teesside you could just see it: "He's done nowt for 2000 years".... "and last time it ended in a right mess"... "he only got the last job because of his dad,".... "and he couldn't man manage mavericks like Judas".... "Booo! Jesus out!"

Yeah - and if I'd been around then I would have saved a lot of people a lot of time not to mention the avoidance of wars and persecution.
Best to deal with the elephant in the room and clear the decks rather than pretend the bloke loves the Boro and didn't say those things.
I will come round cos I have to. I have never bood and I am a glass half full fan. I just don't like people slagging off Middlesbrough and wouldn't personally appoint someone who had.
That said, I wish him every success.

Strachonistas surely??
How can anyone be surprised at a 48 hour delay.
When hasn't there been in almost any Boro signing of recent years.
Magnificent Parmo army! Let's hope for a decent game and a result to live up to the travelling support.

We can never know what goes on behind closed doors. It is why you will see many 'guess', 'suspect', 'from what I see' and 'appears' in my posts.
In this case one guesses what ever one suspects from what you see and appears to be the case. My guess is that the club want Coops and Agnew to get on with the business of getting three points.
From what I read Strachan is happiest on the training pitch and loves the day to day involvement. In that case he may not want a tranche of experts to do his bidding whilst he does sudoko in the office or plays prem manager on his play station.
I suspect he will come in with his no2 and use the resources he has available.
I also suspect Gibbo wants to keep the staff he has in the club for an element of continuity. It may well be a point of 'principle' and part of the model the club are persuing.
And dont shout at me, I am only guessing and trying to get whatever awards going. It is nothing less than I deserve after long service to the blog.
Anyone see Dormo or Werdermouth lurking anywhere?
Come on the Managerless Red & White Army!
I agree with Richard at 12.18am. We need all the support we can get. I have a friend who is one of the arch-loyalists. (Though I have to say, at the very end, even he said that Gareth had to go).
My friend used to disagree with anyone voicing a critical opinion about the players or the tactics etc. “The club doesn’t need support like that...” he would say. He argued the club would be better off followed by a smaller number of 100% committed fans, all hoarse from shouting uncritical support, and all showing the blind faith we have heard about.
He was wrong. The club needs money to pay for the players to keep it in the style to which we would like again to become accustomed. I realise that TV money outweighs other finances available but when fans come to the ground they don’t only pay the £35 or whatever for their ticket.
They might buy a couple of pints and a Newboulds pie before the game, they might buy a programme. They might buy a shirt or a scarf or some other items from the club shop before going home. Their money is as good as mine to the club.
Unfortunately there aren’t enough of the “old school dyed in the wool supporters” to keep the club afloat. Mr Gibson knows that if the ground is full, or nearly full, it is better for the club than if the ground is half-empty.
Whether the returning supporters are “political exiles” or “Plastic post Juninho bandwaggoners” their plastic (if that is how they pay for their tickets) puts the same money into the club’s coffers as mine does.
So I would welcome back everyone who has been missing, for whatever reason, in recent months. The ground will be much better, the atmosphere improved, if the seats are filled.
Anyone doubting this should look at Darlington. A wonderful white elephant of a ground with something like 2,000 fans in it – they may be the most committed and the rump of the earlier supporters, but they are still 2,000 peas rattling in a drum. And it is more than sad (unless you come from Hartlepool).
So let’s hope for a much fuller Riverside at the next home game. And that managerial pen is finally put to paper.
Any prices for 200th post today? All in 4 days - is it more than after the Cardiff defeat in the FA Cup?
UTB!
Forever Dormo at 12:20 PM:
That's why I couldn't for the life of me understand why Gibson took such a risk of alienating supporters outside the 5 mile radius. Absolutely mental - especially when you have a stadium that's not full. You should be encouraging anyone and everyone to attend and fill the vacant seats!
Jarkko at 12.30pm -
I was rather hoping there had been a blockage of posts sent in the last few hours, which had been waiting to be put up on the board after the live blog by AV at the game had been closed down. In that case, I MIGHT be near the 200th post. You never know.
An E Class maybe.....
OK, Preston game over.
Late goal conceded not once, not twice, but three times on our travels. I haven't even mentioned Leicester's Riverside goal yet.
Seriously. Enough is enough is enough.
(almost tears hair out)
More later.
TYPICAL BORO, chance to hang onto the coat tales of the top two missed, and the opportunity of probably adding 5-8 thousand extra fans on the Plymouth gate, there will not be many of them.
Again, top half team, wrong result, it just adds to the ammunition for removing Mr Southgate, for the dissenters. The defence was woefull at times, two poor goals conceeded, and for me Ledger and Wheater are not working at all, especially with Hoyte at RB. And can somebody please tell me when a forward might score.
I still think that Mr Strachan, if he comes, will have his work cut out, without any additions to the squad.
That last minute goal (again!) was farcical. Everyone marking shadows. There is only one Ball on the pitch, is it so difficult to just watch the damn thing instead of chasing opponents running around our box. Just watch for the ball, track its path, get on the end of it and clear it.
Whatever money we got for Huth and salary saved I hope its not going to prove a false economy. If GS II can't sort the backline out quickly then the spotlight will be focused higher up the West Stand!
Cooper said in the his post match interview on the Football league show "lessons learned"........ That's rather prefound - don't think I've heard that from MFC managment before!!
Concentration, fitness or a mixture of the two!? Why are we always leaking late goals?
Pedro de Espana:
"I still think that Mr Strachan, if he comes, will have his work cut out, without any additions to the squad."
Relatively few of us have been saying that for a long time now. But all we've been hearing in reply is how good a squad of players Boro have and it should be able to take on this division blind-folded. All it will take is a change of manager!!
Oh, yes? Is that right? We'll see! And do you know what? I don't believe Gibson will chance it this time! He'll be begging Strachan to spend some money to ensure the £25M comes in. I'm pretty convinced he wants his personal debt money back that he's shelled out over the years and he's not going to get it unless Boro gets promoted.
What the PNE result does demonstrate is that Gibson is right to be concerned. However, if he'd financed the club a bit more strongly to retain a few "old heads", we wouldn't be seeing the repeating failures to close matches out in which we're leading. Last season, I was sick to death of illustrating statistically how these lapses were costing us points. Had it not been for those, we'd still be in the Premier League. And here we are, still doing the same damned thing in the Championship.
That equalising goal of PNE's was shocking! David Wheater should be renamed Rip Van Winkle. He wasn't just sleeping - he must have been comatose, the amount of space that guy had to nod an unchallenged header in. Hell's teeth, my pet dog could have scored that!
And we can hardly claim it was a poor refereeing decision to award a free kick in the first place, as it was a similar situation that led to Gary O'Neil's goal in the first half.
Half way through the second half as some of us were having a "Total Immersion Experience", listening to Brownlee on BBC Radio Tees, with Sky Sports Score Centre in one window, Vic's webcast in another and some of us with Sky Sports and big McAnally reporting on TV live from Deepdale, Boro were top of the Championship, one point clear. It felt good - and then it didn't - and then it did, again. But then it didnt!! And at the end of it all, fun though it was, I felt like I'd been mugged!
You're not wrong Pedro!! The one with the ginger mullet has his work cut out!
In the after-match phone in on BBC Radio Tees, Brownlee was silenced (yes - it's true - albeit for about 1.46 seconds!!) by an astute questioner, who asked, "If after another 12 matches, Boro don't look like they're nailed-on favourites for an automatic promotion place, will Gibson be looking for another manager?"
Have you ever "heard a silence" on Brownlee's programmes? Well folks, you did on Saturday, as Gibson's mouthpiece, as he seems to have become, contemplated the possibility that Gibson himself may not actually have a "Plan B" should the Ginger Messiah fail to weave his magic with the cheaply-assembled squad that Gareth built!
I don't know about the coat tales of the top two but I bet Southgate's anorak has a few stories to tell.
Richard at 1.17am - appointing GS(ii) is, in fact, Plan B.
No doubt AV will be aware that Aggers was today planned to meet GS(ii) at 4pm for discussions.
And while we all sleep in our beds overnight, some bloggers from Australia or the USA will sneak quietly up to bag the 200th post on this thread.
here is my submission for number 200 - that should just about do it
